After going through this thread I am a little bit confused how avatar made it in. Most of the films I know in here are either very popular (like Myazaki and Kubrick Films) and fit not in here cause they are not hidden at all or they are just bad movies in my opinion.

And thus I will post a academy award winner myself. Category foreign language. Imho the best German film ever made:

I dont remember the name. I watched it on TV like 10 years ago. It was about a man who worked in circus throwing knifes. He decided to commit suicide jumping from the bridge but met a young woman there thinking of the same... A really good film.

It's called The Girl on the Bridge and it was a very good artsy romance film. I was going to suggest it myself. :-)

I am only on page 17 so far, but much thanks to the OP and all that have shared not so well known hidden gems. I hunt for movies and this thread has been very helpful! Much appreciation to you all!

I am no where near the end of this thread, but since I am here I will add to the array of movies mentioned or add a nod to some already talked about.

Romance: Penelope (Sweet and funny.)

Love Me if You Dare (Twisted.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Horror: Deadgirl (Such an original take on an unoriginal evil...but who's the evil one really? This is a treasure! MUST SEE for horror fans!)
LINK to youtube trailer

Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon Trailer (Awesome movie for any horror buff like myself. TOTAL hidden gem.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Fritt Vilt (You will more than likely need subs and better than I expected and more than likely a hidden gem for others.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Tucker & Dale vs Evil (Make it past the first 30 minutes, it's worth it, I promise. Freaking funny as heck movie!)
LINK to youtube trailer

Wolf Creek (Movies rarely ever scare me, but watching this one I went to lock the doors of my house. I think I found it so disturbing because it was based on a true story. *shudder*)
LINK to youtube trailer

Comedy: The Hudsucker Proxy (MUCH better than expected!)
LINK to youtube trailer

Kung Fu Hustle (Surprised more people don't know about this movie. So this one goes under hidden gem.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Big Nothing (Hidden Gem)
LINK to youtube trailer

Hamlet 2 (Hella under-rated comedy. It's stupid, entertaining, and very funny.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Scifi: Moon (Better than I expected.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Psychological Thrillers: Exam (Better than expected.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Funny Games (They're right, it was good and disturbing.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Frailty (Probably not a hidden gem, but it was for me. I just saw it recently for the first time.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Basic (Another one that slipped by me till recently. NOT really a hidden gem, but perhaps it slipped by others as well and I can help bring it to their attention.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Hard Candy (Total gem!)
LINK to youtube trailer

Teeth (Better than I thought and hidden gem. I actually consider it more of a comedy.)
LINK to youtube trailer

The Invisible (Better than expected and not widely known.)
LINK to youtube trailer

Action: Boondock Saints (For as popular as this film was, believe it or not, there are still a freaking TON of people that have never heard or it or seen it.)
LINK to youtube tailer

Musical: ONCE (A beautifully done movie in so many ways! My eyes are watering just listening to the music in the trailer...)
LINK to youtube trailer

OLD SCHOOL: Arsenic and Old Lace (It's a classic that many of the youth may not of heard of. See it! Even my 14 year old liked it and she went into it kicking and screaming about me making her watch it.)

______________
Just watched It's All Gone Pete Tong and I really enjoyed it! Thanks to whoever recommended it last year. Seems I am a bit behind. LOL I also checked out The Man from Earth and that was OK and entertaining enough.

OK well there are a few for you for now. Some hidden gems, some that were better than I thought, and some not so hidden but others might of missed.

BTW, as a heads up...While I was reading back at the beginning of the thread, those that posted pictures and made no comment of what the movie was in text? Were gone. The picture had since been removed so that I sadly had no idea what they were recommending.

Since this thread may help people for years to come find movies, I would suggest you type the movies name in text as well as post the picture. That way down the line if the picture is no longer available, people will still know what great movie you are recommending.

Just a thought. :-)

I love horror, mostly because the genre is so open to all kinds of different concepts for movies.

This movie was a total mindfuck, and I really found it interesting. It's one of those movies thats a lot of fun to go back and watch after you've seen it once.

I didn't read the whole thread but even in the first 2 pages one of these was mentioned, but as somebody who doesn't like many movies and often gets badgered into watching them by friends family here are 2 that ended up being favorites.

Stardust
Seemed like the kind of retarded "cute" movie I would despise but I actually really really like it. Not sure why completely.

Finding Forrester
A movie my mom was going to watch (she has terrible taste in movies, but likes people to watch them with her) when I was like 16-17 (long time ago). I only watched because of Sean Connery but after this I actually figured out I really enjoy this genre of movie, Inspirational or w/e you want to call it.... (Also helped that Anna Paquin reminded me a lot of the first girl I really fell for somewhere around that time :D )

The entire Ip Man trilogy* is gold though I dunno if you'd say 'surprisingly' or not given Donnie Yen is in it

Chocolate http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1183252/ if you like fighters though not quite the same caliber as Ip man I still found it fun.

* Oops, I was including "The Legend Is Born: Ip Man" even though it's a different director and cast it was still pretty good. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1641638/

I know Chocolate has gotten okay reviews, but for me whenever a girl is fighting I just automatically think "haha you got ownd by a girl" instead of "oh shit bad ass dude fighting 20 people at once!"

Not sexist any anything... :D

Some of them are more known than others depending where you live. I clearly highly recommend all of them they are pure gold!

La Haine is a masterpiece. Kind of weird for me to see it qualified as a "hidden" gem though. And I wonder what foreigners think about it, I didn't think that the racial/social tensions in urban Paris in the 90's were much talked about outside of France.

I found it quite enjoyable, altho I do reckon you have to be in the mood a bit.
Big fan of the actor tho, he also appears in Rock-n-Rollah and Inception.

crazy as fuck film. kinda got tired of the way it was shot/edited near the end. worth a watch.

+1 for this movie. Big fan of Song Kang-ho, ever since i saw him in "The Good, The Bad, and The Weird".

Also, check out "The Secret Reunion"

The story follows Song Kang-ho as Agent Lee Han-gyu of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) who falls from grace after failing to stop the assassination of a North Korean dissident. The sleeper cell responsible includes relative newcomer Ji-won played by Kang Dong-won, who gets marked as a traitor when the mission goes south. Six years later both men are working different jobs when they bump into each other and quickly form a bond.

Very good and unique story centering around the development of the two main characters and their relationship between each other. Also, great acting

A man wakes up to find himself alone in the world. This is a fantasy of mine and the film is adequate.

Not that "hidden" but I think it's underrated.

A very good film indeed, although I don't like the historical setting very much.

Oh, and "Les Aventuries" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061376/

C'mon people, please don't post your completely mainstream and VERY famous movies in the "Surprisingly good films/Hidden Gems" thread . I'm looking for things I haven't seen yet.
