It's almost always a farming item (sometimes you get it lategame vs heros like PL to deal with illusions). For Ember, it just happens to be the best farming AND fighting item.

its unique on ember
am hits one target at a time+cleave radius.
ember hits all targets in large aoe, so the cleave gets splashes from anyone standing close to another hero or creep in the radius
