Read my invoker guide in the strategy section. I think I answer all your questions.

I watched one of your replays: http://dotabuff.com/matches/117077286

Playing Invoker you generally want to be mid, but since it's a pub that's to be expected. My only real complaint about the lanes was that you took the safelane over PA, when Invoker is a much stronger laner and suited for the long lane over PA.

The next area of improvement is your skill build and item build synergy. Firebolt's guide will go into more details about number of quas, wex, exort points at different stages of the game. However, it is important to note that the item build you went blades of attack, tangoes and gg branch is for a quas-wex invoker, not exort-quas. Honestly, if you had more regen in lane, you and tide should have been stomping tiny/zeus, both of whom are somewhat mediocre laners. You have a huge range advantage over them, and you really needed more regen/stats to sustains yourself as they ran out of mana for lightning bolts and stuff. Also, you don't max quas over wex, because wex is really important to add range for your big AOE teamfight spells like meteor/tornado/emp. If you do go 4/0/4/2, I don't think there is a reason to max quas over wex at all.

Aghs stick is kind of a bad choice to get too early into the game, because it really doesn't add much until you are level 17. An earlier force staff is much more valuable so you can position yourself to land all your spells. You should also try to work on improving your map awareness. Watching you play in your camera perspective was quite painful during the laning phase. One of the most important skills as an exort invoker is having the presence of mind in laning to check out engagements in other lanes. Every lane had some form of solid slow/disable, and I'm pretty sure there was one point where void had really low hp for a sunstrike kill and you didn't notice.

You also want to make sure you focus on where you are running. At around 28-30 mins, a teamfight happens at your jungle from the rosh pit entrance. You didn't take a glance at what was happening then ran straight into 4 heroes. Also, carry a tp as invoker. Invoker is going to want to lane for an extended period of time, to hit key levels like 10-13 early, but that doesn't mean you sit idly. There are tons of counter-ganking opportunities for invoker carrying a tp, and it really could have helped win your team some more early engagements.

Finally, try to stay manner, and realise that wards aren't just for supports to buy. In a pub, supports getting earlier items can be important too, so chip in a bit if your team really needs it. 150 gold is nothing compared to the farm/map control you gain for 6 minutes.

Since Invoker is so versatile, there isn't one specific mid-late game build you have to go. Get E first since your base damage is terrible, then Q, then R (lv1 sunstrike is extremely situational - get invoke at lv2 if you need it). From there, you don't need any W unless you're in danger of ganks and need ghost walk or something. If you aren't taking much harass, you can hold the lv6 skillpoint until lv7 and put one into R and one into E for an earlier potent sunstrike. Get your 4 QE, get a point in W if you didn't earlier. Max E.

From here, points in Q buffs forge spirits, tornado lift time, dblast stun time, ice wall duration, and cold snap. Max Q (with a scepter) will let you short range tornado > sunstrike > meteor > dblast plus follow up. Max W will let you scout with tornado, buff alacrity's atk speed boost, increase dblast disarm duration, and make meatball roll farther. Emp isn't as good later because of higher mana regen and mana boots. Q is more aggressive, W is more supportive, so whichever your game needs.

When the pro's are last hitting, they stutterstep or whatever it is called to ensure they hit at the last second. What are they doing to do this?

spam the S key until you want to attack, at which point stop pressing s
i think this can only be done to the nearest creep (autoattack on)

This is actually something I had trouble with in the past. Does a-move in DotA 2 really always go for the closest possible target? I had issues where I thought my hero went nuts instead but I'm not sure if it might be aggro related (e.g. some kind of prioritizing besides range) or if I'm just dumb.

It goes for the nearest unit unless that unit is not attacking you and you're being aggro'd by another creep, then it goes for that other creep.

Its really frustrating in Dota 2 because my hero will often opt to aggro the range creep over the melee creep right next to me. I miss lasthits (when spamming S) all the time to this

I assume it's because the ranged creep is attacking an allied hero (usually me) and so it gains a higher target priority but its quite frustrating as I said. Fortunately it happens like... once every 5 game so I don't really care that much.

Yeah that makes sense. I want a "real" a-move like in BW. I hate when units try to be clever. =(

Yeah, this has happened to me too. Not much you can do about it except pay attention and avoid that from happening.

The Stop command will make you act like a creep at times and like a normal hero at other times. Pretty sure it attacks the nearest creep if all aggro meters for the creeps are the same (including the range, sometimes melee creeps don't have the same aggro bar) but sometimes the aggro from the range creep is higher than the melee creep (due to the range creeps higher DPS) therefore the hero will stutter step and auto attack the range creep. If you notice this happening, just stutter step but A click onto the creep you wanna kill.

I thought the trick for last hitting was to spam S and right click together so that once you want to last hit, you stop spamming S and you will auto the right clicked target. This avoids the AI auto attack targeting issue.
