Heroes with a win rate less than 40% or more than 60% in 6.81b - 2
Heroes with a win rate less than 40% or more than 60% in 6.82 - 3

Conclusion - current patch slightly less balanced than previous patch.

nice conclusion after a few days

Since those numbers mean like nothing, I am going to conclude they mean I should drink more during dota to help my win rate.

More polarized winrates than the previous patch don't mean anything.

Got it.

While we're at it, let's ignore the trends in which heroes have seen an increase in winrate, and which have moved down the scale, because that doesn't mean anything either.

...Seriously, guys. Everyone's sick of both the "DOTA IS DEAD ICEFROG IS STUPID" just as much as the "ICEFROG IS GOD AND CAN DO NO WRONG". There's no reason to discard information just because you don't like what it's saying.

He's correct in saying that the 40-60% difference is too small to matter by itself.

There's also a more subtle argument he didn't explicitly make that I might have selected the 45-55 line specifically to make my conclusion look stronger. (I didn't, and you can that draw your own line and count yourself to confirm the result)

TRAP[yoo]'s implied "not enough data yet" criticism doesn't invalidate the results. The huge sample size means that small differences in win% are statistically significant.

The conclusion itself isn't wrong. 31 to 38 is enough to say it could be slightly less balanced. It's just that being slightly less balanced doesnt matter that much. The goal isnt to decreases the variance so that heroes get closer and closer to 50%. It's nice if that happens, but it isn't the main goal of patches. There will always be patches that are slightly more balanced or slightly less balanced, specially after major changes to the game.

Yeah, the 6 heroes hanging out in the 54-55% range, and the 7 heroes between 40-41% both show you could've fudged the range to 53% and 42% and got even more dramatic numbers.

I'm also curious what the impact on average game time / min/max game times has been, this patch. And by association what icefrog/valve would want the average game time to be.

@SKC

I fully agree, and given how dramatic some of the changes were this patch, it's entirely reasonable to expect this patch to be "more imbalanced". It's the responses that essentially amounted to "No it isnt imbalanced ur stupid" that are annoying.

According to dota buff, the average game is about 30 minutes.

That's surprising. Seems nearly everyone has anecdotes of the late game being unavoidable.

The shortest recent game I found on dotabuff was 30:00. I can't find a single 29:xx, so I'm suspicious that for some reason that doesn't show games under 30 minutes. If it is showing every game, then average would be 34ish minutes, yeah. I'd prefer a more reliable source of info for that one, though.

Meanwhile, Rocketbear stack is nearing the conclusion of a 70 minute game.

Well all of the league games I've watched have been very interesting, 6.82 seems like a good patch so far in terms of play outside of pubs it seems.

TLHI is a bad standard for anything, people just fuck around and the skill gap is huge.

But yes, games are a bit longer. Also people are blaming the patch sometimes iwthout looking at the team comps. I am watching a Naga/BM game vs Specter and its a farm fest. But those heroes are trash at team fighting and the naga is terrible. Yets its clearly the patches fault.

Spectre might be a bit powerful, but people also are REALLY dumb against her in the games I have played.

I was mistaken, it's rocketbear stack, not TLIH. Game was 76 minutes, they lost ;D

And I'm not saying that to suggest that average game time is actually 50 minutes or anything. Was mostly a point-of-interest comment.

And a maintained 60%+ winrate on a hero is not "a bit powerful". That shit's OP

It should also be taken into account that people are taking risks that would have been ok in the last patch and getting punished for it. People will adjust and figure out how to win games without getting punished, like taking rosh before going high ground even if you have a good lead.

I found 4 sub-30 games in a sample of 99, after excluding 1v1 and no-stats-recorded games.

I doubt there were a lot of sub 30 minute games in the last patch. Dota is not a short games and pub players are idiots and like diablo.

Sure, but if you have to take high ground first, there's also risk associated with that. Smoke ganking has an associated risk for both parties. Not teamfighting is a risk. Teamfighting is a risk. Going for a rune is a risk. Not going for a rune is a risk.

You're not going to play risk-free dota. You have to take risks at some point. You're just punished a bit harder for it later in the game now than you were before. "Comeback opportunities"

Players need to adjust and feel the fear, rather than just yolo onto highground when a teir 2 is down. They also need to get used to playing and fearing these super late game heroes like spectre, antimage and naga. Its going to suck for pubs for sure, because people are stupid, but that was always the case.

But like all red blooded dota loves, I will fear the naga vs spectre games.

I've found 8/28 so far for matches a week ago, but the Dotabuff site is not built for this sort of query and it's really slow to sample.
