running this in act 2 nightmare in a group setup with a witchdoctor and a wizard

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#UWXdfQ!bZX!ZbYZZZ

I dash in, pull the mobs with cyclone strikes, group hits hard with dps.
I use WotHF for single target and CW after cyclone strike for aoe damage.
Very efficient farming build

I'm running this:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#aZdTXh!YUX!ZaZZYa

I run with a barb so I've Breath of Heaven is pretty much a must to help keeping him up. I've found I can use dashing strike to avoid almost all animation attacks from mobs/bosses and if shit hits the fan 7ss to get immune. Lashing tail kick is my spirit dump and personal health regen which works out great as I generate loads of spirit by spamming Breath of Heaven with the rune.

Dashing strike is also great for peeling/getting to those ranged mobs which barbs and monks can both have some trouble with getting to else.

I'm running a pretty defensive build atm. Just recently switched from BoH/Blazing Wrath to Serenity/Peaceful Repose and it makes a HUGE difference against tough boss packs.

The main problem I was finding in late NM was that against tough packs where you need to kite, running out of spirit is basically death if you don't have the HP to stop and fight. Serenity means you have at least 3s of guaranteed spirit regen every 20s.

7 sided strike is an amazing survivability CD since you cannot be targeted while using it, so you can use it to dodge massive attacks/unavoidable AoE/etc.

The one thing I really don't like about that build is exalted soul. I almost never find myself reaching max spirit, so 100 extra at max won't help you as much as some of the others.

Huh, I don't take Exalted Soul, I take Guardian's Path... but now I see the icons are the wrong way round when selecting skills

Yeah, agree that +max spirit isn't great, because if you're at max spirit you're not in trouble and therefore you don't actually need the extra spirit.

I absolutely LOVED cyclone strike in normal, but its getting more and more suicide to use it through nightmare. Is it just me undergeared or are you guys experiencing the same?

And for all you solo-running monks: the AoE-heal and mantras are pure gold in a party. I cant even begin to describe how many times I have saved the day with a well placed heal.

Right now I'm using this build. Dual wielding and skill setup is aimed at maximizing healing while still having spirit dumps. Much more of a party build, but the amount of self heal is pretty ridiculous. Working pretty damn well throughout nightmare so far. Serenity gives enough time to save up spirit for a bell if stuff starts to get hairy, and being able to keep mantra of healing's buff uptime is really, really good. I'll probably swap the rune to the 20 resist all though once I unlock it.

Has anyone tried 2H in NM? I'm interested in if the spirit gen of 2h gets better later on or if it stays as shit as it is currently in normal.

I don't really see anything that could make it better.

Maybe if you stack attack speed items but doing that would similarly benefit dual wielding spirit regen, so in comparison to dual wield spirit regen i can't see it catching up.

I'm just early Nightmare and haven't actually tried it just saying how it looks like to me.

full support http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#aWgXRQ!bYT!aZaZaa to be honest, monk healing is overpowered imo. (fists of thunder is just for the teleport, then use crippling wave, or keep using fists of thunder if u need the spirit, oh and keep the 3 second buff from mantra of healing on as much as possible.)

I use my own pretty cool build...

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#WZgRfk!YcV!bZYbZa

The idea is that you are nearly permanently switching between Serenity and Inner Sanctuary. You can achieve this with Beacon of Ytar and this basicly makes you invulnereable. The moment you activate Inner Sanctuary, you hold Shift to stay in the middle of it and you activate Cyclon Strike with Implosion.. Now you have 7 seconds to kill everything and recharge spirit. Then you activate Serenity and kill some more and switch back to Inner Sanctuary.. It's pretty insane what you can do on battlefield using this build actually.. :D

I'm not level 60 and I know there is room for improvement especially with runes, but it works very well in Nightmare act 4..

Using a 2h weapon will always regenerate spirit slower than dual wielding. However, you're more likely to get items that have passive spirit regeneration in NM, which helps out a ton. Honestly, I only roll with daibos now because I like the damage too much. I'm one-shotting most stuff in Act 2 NM with explosion of light, and whatever survives is easy fodder.

Just tried out a full tank build with Deadly Reach + Armor rune, Mantra of Evasion, the dexterity to armor passive, WotHF with dodge rune (Or cyclone/sweeping wind) , breath of heaven, blinding flash, and serenity.

This build is for groups only, I have a Wizard, DH, and WD friend for big deeps.

It's amazing. So much fun to be completely unkillable, getting upwards of 45% dodge and tons of armor. Don't even need a shield, I just DW for spirit gen.

I also loved cyclone strike in normal. I would cyclone strike, blind them with blinding flash, and then knock most of them back with vulture kick. But in NM too many of them resist the knockback and the blinding flash doesn't last as long due to resistances. So I agree that unless you're way over-geared(or maybe I'm just under-geared too) it's quite suicidal to pull large mobs to you using cyclone strike.

Level 58, bout to finish ACT III Hell.

Build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#WeijXh!ZXY!ZZcb.a

Philosophy: 1h/shield.

So, this build revolves around passive moves that increase survivability, and low-cost spirit moves that have prolongued durations. Air ally is an aoe-badass and makes your spirit dump a lot more valueble! Due to everything being relatively cheap, I chose a very powerful/expensive spirit dump.

I'm far more tanky than my barb friend, but I have just rencelty went to a new 2her, so we'll see if that stays!

stats UNBUFFED:
dex: 1035
damage: 5781
hp: 30k
magic find: 9%
dodge: 30.3
armor: 2782

I'm getting the impression through reading this thread that a lot of you guys don't have elective mode on. You really should. It lets you use multiple skills from each grouping. For example, I currently have BoH and Serenity. I can't imagine getting rid of either.

i dont understand the point of exalted soul, plus seize the initiative always seems worse than Resolve.

the only reason i can see having exalted soul is if you have so much passive spirit regen that you can actually make use out of a higher max spirit pool

Yeah, I spec for increased spirit regeneration and exalted soul because I love dumping spirit to increase both my DPS and my health regen with transcendence.

I'm not very far along (beginning of Act II), but I am doing something that works for me pretty well, and I don't see other monks doing it. Unfortunately Bnet appears to be down so I can't link to the build right now.

First, I use a dagger or a fist weapon (with the best ruby I can afford) in one hand and a shield (with emeralds). I use +dex and +vit in armor (I was using almost pure +dex, but was starting to die a lot--I literally quadrupled my HP by making minor armor adjustments and sacrificed very little damage

The core concept of my build is the combo Tempest Rush + Sweeping Wind + Transcendance + Exalted Soul. Hear me out--it is so fun.

I use fist of thunder with teleport (first rune) to generate spirit. As soon as I have full spirit, I hit sweeping wind and spam fist of thunder. I use tempest rush to run straight to the middle of the mobs and to get quickly from group to group (gotta keep sweeping wind going). With exalted soul, a dagger and fist of thunder, the spirit regens SOOOOO FAST, and tempest rush + transcendance = insta heal and escape. With this build you will generally lead the charge and initiate the mob fights.

I also use seven sided strike for big damage and breath of heaven to bail teammates out (I can tempest rush in, knockback the mobs, heal ally + scorch enemies).

Before that my build was based on exploding palm + cyclone strike, which is also totally fun and "finesse'y" in that you have to hit the biggest mob with E.P., and time it so that cyclone strike pulls the other in right when the bomb goes off--super satisfying, but more situational.
Make more anything.

I use both Seize the Initiative and Resolve, currently lvl 53 in A2 Hell.

I had been using Exalted Soul previously because it allowed me to spam bell.. but I'm getting ready to drop it.
