Salary caps would totally ruin futbol for Gods sake look at the MLS what a Piece of trash. I am actually happy that Man city are owned by a big group now, exiting to see a new powerhose in the making. Hopefully they get good talent recruiter so they buy players that are really worth it and work together with the coach. What? Salary caps and draft system can be amazing. MLS sucks just because the USA doesn't have the money or interest to buy good players ![]() Though there are a few extremely rich and consistently strong teams, American sports are exciting because there is so much parity between the teams. Honestly, unless you're a hometown fan, would you watch 8th place vs 9th place in ANY european football league?

Before MLS, there was a NASL (North American Soccer League). It started on the late 60s and on the middle 70s got popularity because a lot of investors bought the teams and started signing foreign stars, including the best player at the moment, Pelé who joined New York Cosmos. Most of this investors weren't "soccer people" and therefore when the money run out because the lack of income and the high salaries everybody withdrew and the league got cancelled until yeas after, MLS started again supported by the FIFA (even used the World Cup to boost "soccer") and with measures to avoid another "crack" as the salary cap is. When I previously posted about my fears, was because of this. It happened before. Millionaires already played with football with nasty outcomes. Read more about NASL at wikipedia

One major difference between english vs italian, spanish, portuguese and south american players is where and how they play as kids. In England there are grass pitches everywhere, kids play proper grass pitch football which favours physically strong kids. In Portugal we play street football where the de facto objective is to pass the ball through the legs of the opponents. Technically gifted kids are favoured in Portugal. It just so happens that today technically gifted players have an advantage. Physical power can be developed later, but not technique. CR was a skinny tall kid growing up, and even in Sporting he looked fragile. Now he's an unbelievable athlete, plays on the left, plays on the right, and makes england look shite.

The problem I think is the lack of intelligent English players, and therefore intelligent English managers. Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Gerrard, Rooney might all be fantastic players but I heard an interview of Cesc Fabregas speaking in English and he is more articulate than any of them. It's a social issue in England because the top schools consider Rugby and Cricket as much more important sports. In many private schools Football isn't played at all. Football is the game of the working class. I'm a season ticket holder for Bristol Rovers (league one team) and I just enjoy supporting a team and watching reasonably good football. I do get to see the occasional premiership match and it's pretty awesome seeing the top players. I don't think the influx of money can possibly be bad for the sport, I think it just adds to the drama and excitement.

http://www.goal.com/en/articolo.aspx?contenutoid=848982 rofl, if their plan succeed and purchase all of the top players , they are going to kill the EPL, no competition , just a bashing every single game they play. And it isn't very smart to invest that amount and pay their gigantic salaries every season, every single business would tell you the same, even if they are rich.

John Terry is probably the best defender in the world and Ferdinand is pretty good too. Gerrard and Lampard are two world-class midfielders. Wayne Rooney is a great striker, no matter his ability to score goals. If Theo Walcott can bloom this year and partner rooney, then you'll have perhaps the greatest 1-2 punch in football. Its just surprising that their results are so lackluster given the squad they have. edit: btw, if Arsenal ever gets bought, im going to stop watching the EPL. The problem with the english team is that there is no one who's actually technically good. They can run up and down the pitch all day, cover a lot of ground and play abc football but they have no one who's actually good with the ball, who can do magic and has creativitity and flair. Just a bunch of workhorses.

Instead, we have a Heskey who is great at annoying defender but know nothing about scoring, Crouch who decided that he need to practise bicycle kicks instead of simple header and the list goes on. Then, the whole team (manager) wants to play some nice football, and as Arsenal has given us the perfect example showing that beautiful/slick football cannot really accomodate english player. Another obvious problem is our goalkeeping and penalty takers. Knowing that England have probably the best defensive line as a national side in the world, we are bound to be able to grind out a draw. But we can't!! because whenever it comes to penalty, everyone screws up.

and how does gerrard choke.. the more important the game is the better gerrard plays. I think england during eriksson played unattractive, but had they been _luckier_ they could have reached the final in at least one tournament, which would remain a good accomplishment.. a penalty shootout is basically a coinflip cept the goalkeeper has some influence. that being said though, I have enjoyed watching the premier league more post-abramovich than pre-abramovich. (and frankly my statement that it shouldnt be possible to win the league coming from nothing in 2 seasons is pretty much meaningless and should be disregarded. ) him coming to the PL has definitely helped make it the best and most entertaining league in the world. but it sucks that this becomes the only way for a team to actually reach the top.. reducing your club to the playground of some guy who wants to play CM in real life is, except for united and arsenal whom happened to be on top of things pre-abramovich anyway, is now the only way any english club can hope to win the league. it's also a negative thing that football players are further overpaid (if nothing else because they already make way more than anyone should), which this surely will contribute to. it's also a negative thing that club loyality is further diminished; the coolest players are the ones who stay with one club their entire career.

germans always win, brazilians are awesome at shooting penalties but dont have as good anti-penalty GKs, england and holland traditionally suck, portugal has done well but thats cause ricardo is a great penalty GK.. I think penalty shootouts are awesome and the by far best way to decide who advances, but it's not like one team is better than another because they play 1-1 and one team wins at a penalty shootout.. and I mean, normally a team gets to play what, one penalty shootout every 4 year or something on average if they are one of the best teams who always advance past the groupstage.. it doesnt really give you a big enough sample size to decide on anything.

i hear that blatter wants to remove penalty shootouts from the next world cup, and one of the ideas is to have the shootout performed before extra time, so that if by the end of extra time the scores are level, the penaltys decide the winner. however if a team wins extra time, they win the match regardless of the shootout results.
