Using Window Mode (W-MODE) with ChaosLauncher 0.5
The ability to play Starcraft in a window has been around forever, but it used to be cumbersome and buggy to do so. Now, with W-MODE thanks to XeNotRoN, there is an easy way to play Starcraft in a window on your desktop. This is especially useful for you guys with widescreen monitors! Here is what it looks like:
Setup
First, you will need Chaoslauncher 0.5.1 or the latest version found here:

Next, open ChaosLauncher and enable the W-MODE plugin:
Now you are running starcraft in a window. Notice that as you move the mouse around your screen, the cursor is not restricted inside the starcraft window. This will make it impossible to scroll using the screen edges. There is a feature that allows the cursor to get "stuck" inside the window, making the game scrollable. Here is a breakdown of every feature:
1 - Restrict Cursor (VERY USEFUL) - When this is green, your cursor will be restricted inside the starcraft window, allowing you to scroll on the edges. To turn it back off, ALT-TAB out of starcraft like normal, then uncheck the button. this is the feature that has been missing from window mode for years!
2 - Moveable - When this is green, the starcraft window can be moved around by dragging the titlebar.
3 - Stay on Top - When this is green, starcraft will stay on top of all other windows on your screen.
4 - Minimize
5 - Exit

You can now double the window mode to 2x size by pressing ALT+F9
You need the latest version of w-mode. You neeed to simply redownload chaoslauncher as w-mode does not autoupdate.

ive been playing W-mode on chaolauncher for months now and i never considered it cumberson or buggy at all!

There seems to be some delay with the cursor movement, anyone notices the same?

There are hotkeys too :
* ALT+F1 Turns on/off cursor clip.
* ALT Temporarily inverts the current state of cursor clip while it
is held down.
Other hotkeys:
* ALT+F10 Enables/disables moving the StarCraft window. If you turn this
functionality off you can not move the StarCraft window to
elsewhere on the screen by grabbing it and holding down the
left mouse button. It can be useful when you use other
windows (msn...) and you click here and there like a zealot
and don't want to move the sc window accidently.
* ALT+F11 Turn on/off always-on-top mode. This option is like that of
Winamp's. When turned on, your sc window will be always on
top of other windows that are not in always-on-top mode even
if you interact with a window other than StarCraft's.
* ALT+F12 Enables/disables all buttons on the caption of the sc window.
This is another security option like switching off window
movement for hardcore gamers. The buttons become grey, but
you can still switch them with hotkeys. This option does
a bit more when turned on than greying buttons of the
caption. Switching on this functionality involves that you
can not use ALT+F4 to close the window and the screensaver
is disabled when the StarCraft window is in foreground.

I used this ever now and then when I am able to run ChaosLauncher. The design and interface looks very nice, and it blends well. Anyone know if it helps with recording FPVODs? (Less usage, less laggy recording).

It is far easier to record from window mode than fullscreen since it doesn't change the color depth or resolution and you can also access other programs too.

What are the pros and cons of using window mode? Obviously there is the stuff that R1ch and Pheer said, but why else would you want this?
PS- I don't have to download a plugin? just check the box in chaos launcher? Or am I missing the link somewhere?

Window is pretty small on a big widescreen resolution. Not sure if it's changable or stuck at 640*480.
And another slight problem is that the sensitivity is the same as in windows, so it might be different from playing fullscreen. I only use it for watching reps, can't imagine playing with windowed mode  .

Whenever I run with windowed mode, when I'm in a game, I cannot use my keyboard. It gives me an annoying beep like its disabled, so no hotkeys or chatting etc in game = unplayable.
Anyone else having this problem or fix?
edit: If I create games its fine, its only when I join

W-Mode has some smaller bugs:
Sometimes you can't type in lobbychat
Sometimes hotkeys don't react
and I think bnet profile links do not work.
The key-problems can be fixed by Alt-Tabbing out.
You can also change the resolution to a lower one with correct width/height for widescreens to increase the size of the window. I use it for obsing, replays, chatting(Starcraft extern chat is an alternative for that) and of cause when developing, as on a breakpoint SC is stuck in fullscreen otherwise.

Am I the only one who doesnt think this is the greatest thing? It is nice if I want to just chat on bnet or maybe for watching replays, but to play its terrible. Fullscreen is so much nicer when you are playing a game. The window is all small and it isnt the resolution I am use to. I have a widescreen, but the window is the shape of a normal screen. So everything in bw doesnt look the way I am use to and it is bothersome.

Just alt tab into firefox or w/e other program you have running then go back to the window.

i've tried previous incarnations of windowed mode on SC and it was always laggy as hell. i look forward to trying this incarnation and i hope it works

That was also my primary concern when I tried this out a few months ago. I'm on widescreen, and the 640x480 window makes text kind of tiny to read. Yes, I could change resolutions, but I'd rather just watch in full screen then.

You can't really to do that you'd be stretching the playing screen which would cause artefacting and other image errors like when you set a low quality youtube video to full screen on a high resolution monitor and it looks like utter shit thats what you would get. When you run starcraft it switches down an obscenely small resolution so it appears bigger but is really just resizing the resolution not stretching it.

Yea it irked me gj. Use ur brain. People would rather use one launcher that contains all functions than two separate launchers with overlapping functions with a few exclusive ones.

I would like a window mode for the ICCUP launcher. I hate the widescreen stretch when I play on my laptop. The feel is annoyingly different from my desktop 4:3 monitor.

Hey, I've been using chaoslauncher windowed mode for about 6 months now, but all of a sudden when i deselected the option for windowed, it still remains in a smaller screen. I've tried using the regular Starcraft shortcut to launch it but it still remained the same. Any help?

Post your Chaoslauncher.log.
Is it in windowmode when you start starcraft.exe?
Did you install any SC-Tools recently?

I don't have DxWnd, and I have not installed any SC-Tools recently. When I start starcraft.exe, (for some reason it appears normal when i press print screen), starcraft is in the middle of the screen while the top and the sides are black.

So it is fullscreen regardless if you are using Chaoslauncher or the normal Starcraft.exe. But it does not stretch SC to the size of the monitor but remains in a letterbox.
This problem is probably related to your videodriver settings. In the videodriver settings you can ofter choose how programs with a lower resolution than the native resolution should appear.
This is how it looks for me, but it might be different for you if you use another graphicscard or another driver version.
1. Settings for the digital widescreen monitor
2. Scale with fixed aspect-ratio

is it just me, or is starcraft super slow when it runs on window mode?

Can you make a windowed mode that allows for larger windows? My default monitor resolution is 1900x1200, so Starcraft's native resultion is in a pathetically small box.
It would be nice to have Starcraft in a 1440x800 (or so) window, so I can internet and such in game, and have the window big enough to read and play

I would love for W-mode to have adjustable sizes so that you can run it better on widescreen and on dual monitors. Pretty sure its a problem for a lot of people.

I'm sorry to bump up such an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to only increase the window size by 1.5x, rather than 2x as the alt + F9 options does? Is there perhaps a way to edit the .bwl file?

I've always loved the idea of a windowed mode, but the stupid window is too small. I never knew about the F9 command . . . until now.

hmmm wondering if there's anything attached to the files.. AVG says it's clean but I ran it past jotti (online site that scans it via pretty much all the best scanners, avg, avast,panda,nod32,etc). The better ones came back clean but 4 came back and said the file either had a trojan or worm attached.. Running a scan now to be sure, but I didnt notice any extra processes running thus far..

I have a couple things to add to the "new" 2x windowed mode option. Some people I know who use it get lag. I still haven't figured out the reason in most cases but on my brother's computer Rainmeter was causing it. Since it causes lag for some of my friends, one found a workaround by opening up SC in windowed mode and then lowering his resolution. This made the windowed mode bigger as if it is 2x. Hope that helps someone but a better fix for the lag would be better.

dxWND has been out forever, which allowed Diablo I and SC and some other games to be played in windowed mode... But it wasn't that good only okay. This is a different program which works much better and is for SC only.

It only has two possible sizes, 640x480 which is the the native resolution of starcraft, and double resolution if you have the latest version of w-mode.

hmm so is there a way to change the settings file to make it slightly smaller than x2? actually darn I bet it's just... x2... unfortunately that is taller than my screen but not wider

I believe I have this classic problem with Chaoslauncher. I pressed x2 to make it bigger, but the window grew too large
and got out of the boundaries of the screen. As a result now, I am unable to turn it back to normal and it's stuck that way,
and it's a problem because i play by scrolling my mouse at the edge of the screen to move the camera, which I can't do anymore, and left arrow key doesn't work anymore, so arrow keys are out of the question either.
I've researched it for a while, and I tried everything, Alt+F9 to go back to normal mode and Alt+F10 to be able to drag the window doesn't work (tried with real keyborad, virtual keyboard and a combination of both).
Going to Task Manager, finiding the process and selecting fullscreen doesn't work either (where is the fullscreen option).Changing screen resolution doesn't change anything either, it just stops where the virtual screen ends.
I even deleted Chaoslauncher and re-extracted it, re-run it, but nothing, it seems it has everything saved from last time (maybe it has registries somewhere I can delete?).
What do?

The window mode plugin saves its settings in the wmode.ini file. I forgot if it's in the starcraft directory or the chaoslauncher directory(Probably the SC directory). Deleting this file should fix your problem.

I love playing in windowed mode. Playing fullscreen is a bit bleh to me and I don't really feel like adapting to it.

Hey, my friend has a problem, when he tries alt + f9, size changes only in height but not in width so he for example cant see supply, minerals or gass...

He's probably trying to play it on a too small screen. My guess is a laptop 15''. Try on a bigger one or play fullscreen

He has 22'' monitor, he cant play fullscreen cuz of w7 problems

i dont understand how people can really play in windowed mode. Whenever i try it i find myself missing things like drops etc because the window is just small, and things in the desktop behind it distract me. In my opinion windowed mode is fine for a semi-afk game like wow, but sc? you need to be immersed in the game to play to your potential

I bump this and I have a good reason.
I have the same problem as tasoulis12, when I dont use alt+f9 it is too small, but when I use it it becomes too big, its size increases up and down, but not left and right.
MasterofChaos provided the solution for tasoulis12, and he managed to get it working by deleting the wmode.ini file. However, I did that and it is still the same, like nothing at all.

So, I take it there is no other way except to use 640x480 resolution? Wow, I tried doing that and now "RT" error pops up when I try launching Chaos in 640x480.
SIgh...I guess I just have to play in small mode T_T

I know everyone likes their computer set up differently, but what do you need desktop shortcuts for?
If that's your only problem with the 640x480 solution I would recommend getting a mac style tool bar like object dock and sticking everything useful up there and delete everything else. I hate desktop shortcuts just look too messy for me.
I understand you might have a valid reason for having lots of shortcut icons or you might just prefer that to Mac a style dropdown thingy. But it would at least solve you're problem if in a rather round about way admittedly.

Sorry for necroing this post, but is there a way to get Fraps to work with this program? I can use Fraps to record Starcraft normally, but if I use Chaoslauncher to start the game, Fraps won't record.
I saw at the bottom of the W-Mode page on Liquipedia that "Using w-mode helps when recording StarCraft videos - It avoids the strange colour problems that can sometimes effect normal recordings." Does anyone happen to know how to get a recorder to work with this Launcher?

xsplit works. People used to use camtasia with sc. Recording with sc in window mode is nice because it is easier to use overlays and other functionality, since you don't have to tab sc and ruin the recording.
Any program that lets you define the x y co ordinates of where to record on you screen should work... Which to be honest should be every recording program, but I've never used fraps.

you can use OBS as well, free and awesome (auto finds the windows and records their inner or outer+inner parts even if you put other windows on top); I don't think many people are still using fraps

Fraps was much more popular back then on FPS games because of how their code was. OBS does the same thing, but is free. http://obsproject.com/

Uscreencapture is the xsplit plugin of choice for me. I have no trouble I think it's included in a guide around here...

UscreenCapture also works for OBS as well.

OBS doesn't need UscreenCapture actually, you just have to stream the BW window.

Thank you for your responses! I'm running into different issues with your suggestions, but I appreciate your help anyways. =)
(xsplit seems to be for streaming, and obs won't install because it says my DirectX isn't up-to-date, and the latest version of DirectX won't finish installing for reasons unknown to me--the DirectX.log file lists every part as "have already been installed." I'm going to wait for my new SSD to arrive, and maybe just brute force this lag away some how.)
