in the last 6 months i've felt like i was on the verge of discovering the secret to high apm.
up until january my apm was hovering around 240. As a terran, this is pretty good. but I wanted to go even higher. I wanted to be like nada and xellos. to reach for that 300+ consistently without giving up mechanics in the process.
You see, I've watch many replays by amateurs and other non-pros with exceptionally high apm. But they sacrifice a lot to get that apm. They're sloppy, their scvs are all over the place, they're pressing 1212121212 helplessly as their opponents ravage their base. I didn't want to be that guy.
i tried so hard. sometimes practicing with just the computer. in those games, i sometimes made beyond 300+ but it always seemed difficult. I analyzed the hell out of progamers with 300+-guys like nada, hwasin, and xellos. there was something in bwchart that i just didn't see. but i knew it was there.
i finally learned what it was. it was like breaking the sound barrier. the best news is that i didn't sacrifice my mechanics or my macro. i've seen foreigners who try to reach that magical 300 number only to give up game play in favor of bragging rights. I won't name them but their I don't consider them to be true 300 apm gamers.
unfortunately, it's taken me 8 years to come this far. I haven't improved strategy wise,and I'm not great on a whole bunch of maps, but I do know that 'trick' that progamers-specifically terrans-use to get beyond 300.

It's very hard to get more than 200 on the mouse alone, the other 100 has to come from the keyboard or extremely fast mouse skills so spamming 1 2 1 2 1 2 on control groups gives alot more apm wihle doing nothing. If you want to test this get BWchart and start a game vs a comp and just start clicking on a pylon or somtehing then check the apm.

Is it hotkeying a building and holding down that number by any chance?

Here's a hint. There's something that happens between the first 3 minutes and after in ever TvP or TvT. Almost without exception I saw the same thing in Nada and Xellos games with almost the exact same timeline. After 3 minutes they do something so ordinary that you wouldn't even think to look for. But I saw it. In almost every game of hwasin, nada, and xellos. I know what they did to get their high apm and having amazing macro/micro/mechanics.

What? you make it sound like they're trying to brag about their high apm while not sacrificing mechanics if they're just playing extremely well then why do you keep saying apm they wouldn't do it for the lolz when its a serious game and money is on the line

i get 280 apm consistently as protoss
here's the secret
select stuff a lot
select your gateways a lot to see how far your units are so you can time for reinforcements
build your gateways in a cluster so you can quickly select all of them - reduces number of hotkeys required for gateways
change rally points quickly
hotkey smaller groups of units and use more control groups for better control of your army
make good use of spellcasters
maintain probe production
scout constantly
put important buildings on hotkeys (templar archives, if you're researching storm, robo fac if you're making lots of obs)
hotkey a forge maybe if you're mass upgrading
