Hi guyz !
I got a laptop Toshiba Satellite M60-176 and i can't make starcraft work on it. I'ts a centrino 1.7Ghz, Ati X700 video, 1G ram, wide display (1440x900) with Win XP Sp2.
When i start brood an error message appears : "Starcraft was enable to switch video moedes"
Direct Draw error ! "The error encountered while trying to switch video modes was: Not implemented<>vidinimo_PC.cpp line 160<>SetDisplayMode "
I mention my desktop rezolution is 1440x900 and switch to 640x480 seem to be too much for Ati support I've tryed several video drivers and catalist versions and still no succes.
maybe u guyz can help me to fix this problem.

1 Click the Windows Start button, point at Settings, and then click
Control Panel.
2 Double-click the Display icon, click the Settings tab, and use the
Screen Area slider to select the resolution you want.
Note: If the resolution you select is not related to a timing, the
system will reduce the resolution to the closest supported timing.
3 Click the Advanced button, then click the Displays tab.
4 Click the YPbPr tab.
5 Click OK.
6 Click the Advanced button.
7 Click the Adapter tab, then click the List All Modes button.
8 Click 640 x 480.
9 Then select either 640 x 480.
• 60Hz = Progressive.
• 30Hz = Interlaced
Note: YPbPr is only available with the 30Hz or 60HZ settings.
i copy pasted from Ati X700 pdf . you should at least try it to see if it knows the resolution.
i'm guessing it's a refresh rate problem.
And my fury stands ready. I bring all your plans to nought. My bleak heart beats steady. 'Tis you whom I have sought.

it's hard to diagnose some pc problems without being in front of what you're trying to fix, I thought it was refresh rate too.. was there a time when sc worked on that computer?

funky, silly suggestion, but have you guys tried doing random normal (old) resolutions, like 800x600 and 1280, etc?

sry to bring up this old topic again, but I just recently fixed the error described by op and want to pass on my knowledge.
i found the solution on www.driverheaven.net where they have a modded version of the ati drivers that work perfectly fine for me in contrast to the sucky SUCKY original drivers. (man major inability by these fuckers at ati)

so go to http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/ and do as they tell you. the problem should be solved after that.

I've had the same problem and the above suggestions didn't work for me, but I was able to help myself by doing this (btw, I have an "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for ultra mobile" on my Acer Aspire One netbook w/ integrated graphics chip, and I've been using the demo "Starcraft Shareware(ED)", so this might not apply to non-Intel drivers/graphics cards). This will require uninstalling your graphics driver, so MAKE SURE you locate the driver you're currently using first.

1. Close all applications, right click on the desktop background, and hit "Properties"
2. Go to tab "Settings" and hit "Advanced"
3. Go to tab "Adapter" and hit "Properties"
4. Go to tab "Driver" and hit "Uninstall." When the warning pops up, hit "OK" and then "Yes" on the next dialogue box. Your computer will restart in 640x480 with 16 colors.
5. Start up Starcraft! (It will be stretched on a widescreen monitor). But once you exit the game, the graphics driver will automatically start up with 640x480 and all colors. At this point, you can't start up Starcraft without going through the process all over again.

Troubleshooting: If the original graphics driver doesn't start up again after exiting the game, repeat steps 1-3, go to tab "Driver," click "Roll Back Driver," and then "Yes" in the ensuing "are you sure you want to restart" dialogue box. Your computer should restart with the original resolution and all colors.
If this doesn't work, run your original driver's installer ("Setup.exe", etc., which might be several folders in).

That may be true, but lots of people look back to old threads/posts to find advice, and there's always a chance someone will find his post helpful. Probably still not worth bumping, but it's not the worst bump in the world.
