I don't think the trade is as bad for the Eagles as some think. The only two positions I wouldn't trade an RB for are kicker and punter.

I can get down with this logic, but they sold low on the guy with the 3rd most rushing yards in the league this year, who was in a down year. And they got back a player who may be good, but he's still young and largely unproven. They didn't get equal value back, even when you consider the cap savings. That would be the main reason I don't think ti was a good move

Never mind that his offense requires a good rb who can catch to work. Sproles is the man but he isn't an every down back and i don't care for what else they have. Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if they went after Spiller. Buffalo is definitely letting him go and his skillset fits that offense.

On the flipside, for all his bullshit Greg Roman does produce good running offense... but he does the power game, inside runs and few rb passes and screens. McCoy can work inside well, but he thrives on outside runs and those passes.

Also apparently there is talk of McCoy not reporting until he gets an extension. He has a good amount of money on that contract, but only $1m of it is guaranteed. Apparently this was his beef in philly too.

Meh, Shady had good yardage but very mediocre yards per carry.

He's still good and could easily have a monster year or two left but the clock is ticking really quickly on him since he's more of an agility back. That little burst of speed that lead him to get around the edges so well for the first few years can disappear in the blink of an eye.

Save lots of money and get a potentially really solid defensive guy just by getting rid of one RB. Sounds good to me.

eh 4.2 ain't great but it's solidly middle of the pack for backs with 150+ carries. For Buffalo, it makes sense, since they have an ace defense and they know they're gonna run all day. I do think backs that don't hit hte middle so often have a bit more longevity, even if it means they can't scamper as good

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/lesean-mccoy-kiko-alonso-trade-philadelphia-eagles-buffalo-bills/

I pretty much agree with Barnwell's take. McCoy didn't have a down year. His line had a down year. When he was good, his line was in the running for best NFL OL. When the line dealt with injuries last year, his numbers went down. It's hard to justify paying a running back that much when teams can get quality backs for a lot cheaper. As long as they can take care of the line, they can plug just about any running back in there.

The Murray situation is the best example. He's a third round pick running behind three first round picks on his OL.That's the modern running game right there.

I'd be more scared if I was a Buffalo fan. This trade feels like they are waving the white flag on finding competent qb play this upcoming season.

so apparently bills get matt castel and a conditional 7th for a conditional 5th and 6th going to the vikings.

why you wouldn't disclose the draft picks you are tradeign for that you might use in 2 months blows my minds.

I don't understand the last point you made. We are looking for a stopgap in Cassel so we can hold over until we get our first rounder back from that dumb trade last year.

I absolutely think this deal was mutually beneficial. McCoy is on an extremely team friendly deal where flexibility is concerned and he was (relatively) interchangeable in Philly.

That's exactly what I meant. Your team has essentially decided that it can't get a qb in the draft, can't get one in free agency and don't trust the qbs on the roster. So you will go all in on the running game this year and get your qb next year.

Yeah that really is a shame. He was so promising on the Jags some years back. I always sort of wished he got a chance with a better system/support cast around him but looks like he never will.

Ah okay. I think it's the right move too. It's unlikely that we contend this year but I think this gives us a chance without mortgaging the future.

This makes me feel old. I remember my buddy grabbing him off waivers when he was still a nobody his rookie season, and he ended up killing it.

You could really see his decline though. he used to be such a bully inside the tackles, last few years he just looked old and slow. Shame he never made it into a decent system.

Very few people can have his running style and last that long. Dude was a bowling ball with a motor, knew it was going to be a physical game when you faced him in his prime

I think MJD could still be a good running back on a team with a solid O-line like the Cowboys this year, but as running backs have become less valued in a pass heavy league, and as they have seen what the position does to their body, it is not uncommon to see them retiring sooner.

This was before RBs became as easy to come by as they are now, but I remember watching the Ricky Williams 30 for 30 and he talks about seeing Earl Campbell come back for a Texas Longhorns game to be honored and the guy could barely walk in his 50s. He talked about how he didn't want to be like that when he retired and was still relatively young ( even the longer lasting RBs retire in their mid 30s). Jerome Bettis said something similar about struggling to get up and down stairs between games late in his career. Players, especially running backs are understanding more and more just how much football takes out of your body.
