ap is the most tryhard mode that's for sure, you don't have to queue for it. i've had 20 games in ranked so far and not once were the picks delayed until minions spawned. usually people decide their heroes when the game is 30s from starting. i dont see a problem here.

I was 4.3k after placement matches and I've since lost 5 games straight and I'm not at 4.2k. I do think those numbers in the blog were a bit 'forgiving', as in 4k is not as high a benchmark as it sounded in the blog.

It definitely said they didn't know how the rating would look in ranked.

I would imagine most of the higher ranked players (>3000) which equates to about the top 20% of the normal matchmaking pool would be playing ranked while most of the lower ranked players (<3000) would care far less and probably not be playing ranked. Thus the numbers would be skewed heavily, being 4000 mmr would make you top 1% of the entire dota matchmaking pool but maybe only top 15% in the ranked pool.

I think I could be a good benchmark here. I have always been pending between High and Very high skill level (old system) and my rating is 3690 after 15 games. Might not be that high for ranked mm, but for entire pool its probably among the top.

Its the thing that gets lost. It happened all the time in the LoL ladder as well. People forget that the sheer number of players means that being "good" (i.e. knowing what you are doing, how to play, communicate, etc) will put you in the top % of all players. It may not feel that way in games, but thats how matchmaking works: its designed to make even games. Always remember: there are a TON of Dota players in the world. Chances are if you come to TL, you are already in the top % of players simply because you have the desire to learn more. Which counts for a LOT.

4k is just a number. If Valve wants 1% ? 4k then they alter some stuff and there u go, 1% in 4k zone. I think they maybe aim for it, but now we are seeing alot of players ending up in that zone.
