Someone managed to delete some MySQL tables so there are no more forum's posts, no more news and no more BNet-X stats.
He used something not code by Chr1s but by someone else.
I am not the victim of this (since I do not play SC:BW), you are. The real victims are every SC:BW user, you. That's what happens when a dumbass decide to just be an ass and piss off thousands of people for no reason.
Poor kid.
NOTE: No password were touched or anything so don't be scared about that. We exactly know what he did and how he did it.

This'll be the pretense you need to start a new season with better motw system where it's not standard maps one week totally unstandard maps the rest and instead mixed together. Gaia and rh3 in the same week is NOT COOL, put one of them in the week where we've got the choice of playing PA arkanoid and other weird maps.

Hey i used to be able to login to bnet-x just fine at home. But i moved to a new house and i tried to login to bnet-x and i got this message:
"Unable to connect to battle.net. You maybe trying to connect to an invalid battle.net server. If you are using a modem, you may need to manually connect to the internet before connecting to battle.net. For more information go to..."
I am on a router here and i think maybe thats the issue. Maybe i need to forward port number 6112? (or is it another port?) Or is it because of the hacker? Anyone know how to fix this? I login to US West perfectly fine.

From what little I know of what happened, only information (only..hah) was lost. That means the overall existance of PGTour still remains (Website and all its scripts, to be precise). I can only hope that this is true...

I can not and will never be able to fully understand the mentality of someone like this w1r3d fellow. How he can do something so cruel to an orginization providing a free service as good and as high quality as PGT is beyond me. Well he basically boasts in all the first pages. He talks about having a lot on knowledge on the subject and mentions some technical stuff, but without explaining it (like to hack X type of site you need to use X thing) but nothing that seemed very WOA. Well for starters he's lying about the paypal thing.
1) All passwords are MD5 encrypted, look around on google if you dont think MD5 is tough to break, and he says he can break them in 2 minutes, you can't actully break an md5 encryption, duplicate yes, break and get the original password? no.
2) If he did get control of these paypal accounts he would have the police after him, no longer would it be a lucky break.
3) He didn't brute force his way in or anything, it was unfortuantly an open security hole which to any php programmer could have been exploited easily it was just overlooked.

Chr1s's guess is that he uploaded PHPMyAdmin onto the server and gained access to the databases that way. But hey, it's also possible (but unlikely) that he guessed the tables and ran a script to delete them.
But Volma, back on topic with the MD5...there are several databases out there that will give you the plan-text version of an MD5 hash, but of course, only of those that have been cracked.

Guys as an admin of PGTour i'd like to say he's kinda bullshitting.
He gained access through a simple security hole that was created by mistake and not closed, nothing special or no UBER hacker skills, nor was it anything to do with getting the password of another admin.
He had access ot mySQL yes but his bullshit about "I have access to 24 paypal accounts" is exactly that, bullshit. All passwords are md5 hashed and md5 hashes aren't able to be broken by rainbow tables in 2 minutes, manipulated yes but not broken.
Plus as soon as he tries to login to a paypal account if he had access which he doesn't because I don't believe he had access to the password table as this is seperate it would become a criminal offense and he could easily be tracked and jailed.
So all in all, he's a little kid and i'm not going to be worried one bit by him.

I've got a small 600MB rainbow table. It only contains 1-7 lowercase letters, it's still capable of finding around 10% of the passwords I've tested it with. Obviously the hashes can't be salted. Looking up 100 hashes takes a few minutes. I've seen some 40GB rainbow tables floating around, I'm sure they're quite a bit more capable.

It's actually quite simple. On PGTour, we had an upload section for the staff to use. Eventually we branched it off so people could upload replays for complaints, and whatnot. Well, this script wasn't written by Chr1s. This was a premade upload script that they borrowed because it was only for private use when it was first used. What the script failed to do was check the file extension, meaning users were able to upload .php files and execute them.
This problem will undoubtedly be fixed, and it's easy to do so. So, in short, he got lucky. Mind you, he did know what he was doing to an extent.

If you ask me, it's very easy to get people's passwords given the MD5 hash. Unless PGT salts the hash. But no one has mentioned it yet, so I'll assume PGT does not. (even if it does, if the salting is common one then a database might exist for it, too)

I'm not sure what our remaining logs show, but it would be nice if it logged SQL activity. If he didn't make a backup before taking it down, it would have been impossible for him to get the passwords. In addition to that, he had already claimed to gain access to those accounts so soon, which is highly unlikely, borederline impossible.

Like a few other people have said, let's just be grateful that Pat is bothered to repair this for us, never mind bitching about when it will come on... or what will happen.. about mexicans being idiots.. etc etc. Especially since 99.9% of PGT users don't donate, the vast majority have little to be complaining about. Pat said all BNet-X stats and forum posts are gone, which means the season will definitely have to be restarted, as i assume this means everyone's stats have been deleted (ie. everyone is now back at D rank).
According to pat, he's still got the source code and the BNet-X software wasn't affected, so pgt will be back up.. I hope... but the forum posts and the BNet-X stats will be missing.

If he really was able to access our passwords on that server, that means that they were completely unencrypted. That is BAD, and it's very simple to prevent.
First, run a basic update on all of the tables so that all of the passwords are encrypted. The encryption algorithm is generally not reversible. If it is a reversible algorithm, you just need to use the 'crypt' perl function or its php equivalent, but that takes more coding. It is more important to protect your users than keep the site running, IMHO. Thus, use this little statement, (changing table names)
update user_info set user_password = password(user_password)
commit
and all of the passwords are now encrypted (in mysql, unreversible).
Then, all you need to do is setup your login scripts to check the tables against password(passed_password) instead of the straight value.
In addition, it is not necessary to make a complete copy of the tables in order to get the data out. All you need to do is have a client open to the database, turn on output, then do select * from ... and you have the data in a text file that can be easily parsed by anything. The only reason I mention this is because people say that the hacker didn't make a database backup, but that is simply overcome with ONE select statement.
I don't like it when my passwords are saved unencrypted, but knowing this, I have modified all of my financial account passwords that weren't different from the one at pgtour.

If passwords were saved in MySQL(what is most likely) they are saved as MD5 hashes, put they can be cracked quite easily, in few minutes/password.

I just think that most of this community really sucks balls these days. There are some mature people who put a lot of time and energy into keeping it running, and then there are masses of people who simply take and take. The moment something goes wrong, there are all these fucking tears about it.
Imagine for an instant if just 5 sites decided to stop working. TL, GG.net, PGT, WGT, and SCL. What would happen to this community? No VODs, no news, no ladder, back to the bnet days.
As I said, there are a small clutch of individuals allowing masses of people to continue to enjoy this game. Whining about their work when you do nothing on your own just makes me crazy face mad.

When you make a commitment to something, you have to be held responsible, regardless of whether or not you are being paid for it. I manage a clan, I spend hours per week doing stuff for the clan, planning and runnings multiple events, trying to get at least 3-4 clanwars per weekend, handling recruitment, gaming with members, and making sure we do well in WGTCL and BWCL. I've only missed about 3 clanwars in the 9 months I've been with my team, with my other team that I managed, I would wake up at 8 am every sunday to play clanleague for almost a year. I made a commitment, and I honored it, I don't complain, I just do my job.
Maybe its just me, but again, this is my attitude towards things, if you commit to something, you should keep your responsibility. I know managing PGT and all that takes time, but the admins and everyone who do it knew this when they signed up. If people can't come through when theyre needed, then why do they commit to something in the first place.
It's not me being an asshole and saying "OMG I WANT PGT UP SO I CAN PLAY." Don't try to sound like you are so much of a hero Manifesto. It was a simple question, "when will PGT be back up so I can plan accordingly." It was not a demand for anyone to "get off their ass" I just asked for a timetable.
I know it takes time to repair and stuff, so if Pat would say, "hey we got some downtime, be back in 3-4 days while we fix problems" thats cool. Rather than "bnet-x wasnt really affected... we'll be back shortly" and meanwhile the week has passed and no word. This is something WGT staff has done many times, and I know how people are annoyed with that.
As I said before, when you commit to something, you have a responsiblity for it. So when PGT goes down, obviously there are thousands of gamers who have come to depend on PGT for their gaming etc, so the admin staff is somewhat responsible for this, since they made the commitment to work with PGT. If I wasn't managing a clan, and if I knew how to program, I'd be on this shit all day until it was fixed, but I dont have the skill or time, so I don't make commitments I can't fulfill.
Anyways, thats just my take, and my point of view, if you don't like it, oh well. None of what I said in any way means I don't appreciate PGT or the work they do, because I know I do appreciate PGT, I've come to almost exclusively play on PGT and like the server and the admins a lot, so don't try to assume anything.
A simple question should have a simple answer. "When will PGT be back up?" ___________

And he has made a staggering contribution to the community over the years, this problem isn't his fault, he will be working to get it back up and all in all we should just kiss his ass. So while you have my theoretical agreement, this is Pat, cut him some slack. We owe him far more than that.

Oh trust me I know this, and I'm in no way pressuring him or any of the PGT staff or anything like that. If you think that is the case, then you have really poor reading comprehension skills. All I asked was one thing, "when will PGT be back up?" and then I talked about they should be on top of it fixing it, which I am sure theyre doing. I never said "PGT admins are lazy asses and are doing nothing" just want to know how long PGT is expected to be down. When I first saw the site and it said "we'll be back shortly" I thought to myself ... "ok I'll relax today, go game tomorrow" but its been this whole week and no PGT, so I just want to know when it'll be up.

Jesus, there's no reason to personally assault anyone. I'm losing MORE of my games, but due to the fact that I'm playing with the same people over and over again and they speak english well, I'm actually able to ask questions and get feedback about my play. When was the last time you could ask somebody who beat you on pgt what you did wrong and how you can improve. Seriously, stop bitching about pgt, you CAN live without it. It's a bumber for a few of you at the highest skill levels who play it competetively of course, but that's a very very very small portion of teamliquid.

Well, I'd think you would have to be a total moron to spend such a huge amount of effort to build PGT and then just give it up when some kid hacks it. That would be the most irresponsible thing anybody could ever do. If you don't see this then you have a skewed vision of responsibility.
Here is an example. Lets say I promise my neighbor that I will pick up her child from school that day because she can't make it for whatever reason. So, you see here I have made a commitment to do something. Well lets just say that for some reason either a) I don't do it at all or b) I show up like 5 hours late or something. Do you think I can just be like "oh well you didn't pay me so I'm not responsible..." Obviously only an asshole would have this kind of attitude. So, I understand my example and PGT are not the same, but I am just making a point that when you make a commitment to something, no matter the situation, no matter if your getting paid or not, you should honor it.

wanting a schedule really isn't a bad thing. i'm currently wondering whether or not to commit more time to pgtour cw or wgtcl, it's starting to look like wgtcl because i have no idea what's going on with pgtour.
of course the flip side of the coin is that releasing information about what you're doing about being hacked can be used in the wrong hands. pat isn't going to tell us exactly what he's doing because security matters are often best left private.

How about the arguing stops, now. Pat will do what he can to get PGTour back up, if that is the decision he makes. What happens now is up to him alone, and while we're all anxious to get back to it, we have to sit back and appreciate what he has done and what he now has to deal with. It's saddening to see all the work the staff has put into that place that has just been washed away, and I can only imagine how Pat feels; he lost all the work he has put into it.
We need to give him some time to think things through, to accept and deal with what has happened. Would you be expecting someone who just lost all his work to make a split second decision on how things are going to go? I, for one, believe it would be in our best interest to give him time to get a plan together; things that are rushed into action don't always turn out so good.
But don't get me wrong, I understand both sides of the situation. But arguing won't make things any better, they can only make it worse. This is the time that the community needs to shine through, to be just that; a community.
Don't give up on Pat now, he needs your patience and support. We all do.

Pat has responsibilities to a LOT of people, not just PGT's players. He has a responsiblity to his mental and physical well-being, too. Frankly, his job, family, and himself come before PGT: those committments are more important.
Do you honestly believe Pat made an implicit committment to work extremely hard and get PGT back up quickly in the event that it gets hacked? There is NO WAY he could do such a thing without respecting his other, more important responsibilities. So obviously he could not make such a committment.
Now, are you telling Pat, "Either commit to bust your ass if PGT gets hacked or don't start PGT at all"? Because that is the same as saying "I wish PGT never existed."
Lastly, maybe Pat didn't say when PGT would be back because he has no idea himself. Now instead of being all bitchy about it, or demanding that he tell us "I don't know", why don't you cut him some slack on this trivial matter and just assume he doesn't know? Don't you think he deserves this TINY OUNCE of leeway for all he's done?
Pat never committed to getting PGT back in a hurry if it ever got hacked. If you think it was implied by starting PGT, then you are saying PGT should never have started at all. And it is self-centred and inconsiderate to demand a time estimate when you could simply assume he doesn't know. After all he's done for us, the least we can do is cut him some slack for this and give him the benefit of the doubt.

Personally, I trust Pat to spend the appropriate amount of time working to get PGT back up. It doesn't matter how long it takes, because I know Pat was working at the right pace for himself: not too fast and not too slow.
I also trust Pat to tell us when PGTour will be back once he is confident that he knows the answer.
After all that he's done for us, this is the least we can do for him. In my opinion, anyone who won't show Pat this simple trust is an inconsiderate jackass.

The reason we haven't been given a timeframe is probably because one can't be given. Something like this isn't a situation where you can look at it and say "It'll be done in x time" and Pat is doing us a favor by not giving us a timeline we may end up disappointed in. It will be up when it's up and you'll know the minute it goes up. Beyond that the only real thing left to say is GL to Pat and the other webmasters/admins and a big thank you.

Rather than "bnet-x wasnt really affected... we'll be back shortly" and meanwhile the week has passed and no word. This is something WGT staff has done many times, and I know how people are annoyed with that.
As I said before, when you commit to something, you have a responsiblity for it. So when PGT goes down, obviously there are thousands of gamers who have come to depend on PGT for their gaming etc, so the admin staff is somewhat responsible for this, since they made the commitment to work with PGT. You are mistaking my inquiry as a demand. I didn't demand anything. I simply asked a question because I was curious. You people have poor reading comprehension skills.
obviously he has responsibilities to himself and family etc, I'm not dumb. I didnt imply that he drop his life and work on pgt till he drops dead.
The fact that I and other people are spending time thinking to ask when PGT will be up is a sign that we do care about it and we'd be saddened if all of Pat's efforts went to waste by some little hacker.

This is Endurance here and one thing I learned from working with Pat over the past years is that he can keep his cool.
He, one of the chief creators of the website, got his site hacked, and he's doing less whining about it than most of the people who have done zip for the site. Look at his post, pretty calm for just having part of his creation hacked and database deleted, no?
He didn't even cuss at the guy or anything.
Meanwhile, for 13 pages, it's back and forth, back and forth. "OMG, when will it be back!?" "OMG, shut up and wait!" Gee, the calmest one here is the one who's working to fix the issue. Give it a rest guys.

You cannot make demands on someone who coordinates something for you every day that you love that is free. None of you have any idea how much mental effort it takes to run something like that. It's like he's running a business, except without profit. You can't ask anything of him.
That said, something like this happened before iirc, and I think there was a similar debate (how much do we demand of Pat or something like that). And in that case and this, most of the controversy/stress etc. could be avoided by just communicating a little bit more. I think last time there was like some big single statement without any follow up as well. Right now everything is just an echo chamber, people reverberating from very little information. Again, not that this is his responsibility, and not that he SHOULD do anything other than whatever the hell he wants, but if he just said something like "Hey guys, I'm working on it, i'd say a couple weeks" or w/e, it would all be cleared up. But hey, that's not his style, and we need to respect that. If it were me, I'd just have some admin handle it, surely someone besides him knows what's going on.

i remember 1-2 years ago when the funding or the contract or something for team liquid was up. and the community faced a world w/o it. those were sad times, and it does make people anxious to see a prospect of losing something they devote time and energy towards.
that being said, i don't think all of the people asking how long are "whiny bitches", but just lack enough knowledge of the situation, don't have energies to type longer posts, or just want to settle their anxiety that part of the community is missing.
Any how i've enjoyed pat's creations from the days of clan pros. i've also appreciated the use of all the other facets of the 3rd party community (pgt, wgt, bwchart, lasgo's stuff, and pengu1ns, tl.net)

I would also like to know some sort of timeframe, so I know if its worth finding a clan to join or not in the time pgt is down, as I find it very anoying to spam channels looking for someone to play who might not even be any good.
I appreciate what pats doing, but he must have some idea of how long it is going to take? From his initial post I assumed it would be only a day or two, as he said it was completely under control. I guess I was wrong to assume that. However if the general public had some sort of reference as far as how much work is to be done, maybee they can hush up for a while, and who knows maybee even help out?

Whatever it is... Don't forget what Pat has already done for the BW community. Don't hail a saviour for putting in more than 10 seasons of hard work and slay him the moment something goes wrong. He had done more than what 100 of us have put together for BW.

Rule #1 of coding - New code will always create bugs with old code, whether you find them or not.
The point is what may seem on the surface to be an easy problem to fix can easily evolve into something much more difficult. Just be patient and understand that someone is working on it to the best of their ability, and be appreciative of that.

i'm a pgt admin, and i'm wondering the same thing. does that make me unappreciative and bratty? i've spent countless hours too, working for pgt for the love of the job. posting in a thread on another third party site that you'd like to know an ETA for uptime doesn't mean you're a whinger. if you thought for a moment WHY everyone is curious you might not get so huffy and defensive. we're all wanting the same thing here, pgt online. and most of us like yare said (great post there thanks yare), are a bit on edge as to whether or not this event which pat so cavalierly is handling will set pgt back months.. years.. or for good. nobody knows! hence why the many people wanting more information! communication is a good thing! even if pat said "shut up it's none of your beeswax", i'd say, thanks pat

Im not asking pat to do anything he doesnt want to do, and honestly I dont care if pat wants to take a week off and PGT will be down for another week, HOWEVER I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW so I can plan my schedule around it. DOES THAT NOT GET THROUGH YOUR HEAD?

Also, if pat has no idea whatsoever when pgt will be back, he could say that, and I would be happy. However as far as I can tell, keeping the community in the dark is generaly not a good idea.
