In mario's wiki, the word second comes up 27 times, and almost all are mentioning him in comparison with Gretzky. Howe was obviously very good, but only old timers really buy into him being better because of all his truculence. While admittedly badass as hell, scoring wise, there wasn't anywhere close to the gulf between him and the rest of the pack as there was with Gretzky and the rest, or even Lemieux and other forwards. What he had in toughness, those two made up for greatly with skill, playing against much, much better players to boot. Orr is really the only one that rivals Gretzky in any way as far as pure dominance. I think a lot has to do with the fact the Mario never played a full season, had cancer and all that shit and was still pretty dominant despite all that... If he played 18 seasons or whatever fully healthy he could have done better. I still think Wayne's better anyway, but I'm sure that's some of the reasoning behind Mario...

Lemieux played a very lazy "Q" style in the regular season. u know what that means right? if not... do some research. There were probably only 50 or so games where Mario played at his absolute peak. But, every one i've talked to who saw it LIVE said it was the most dominant performance by a single player they've ever seen including Gretzky and Orr. Mario when healthy in the playoffs played better than Gretzky. For some people that is enough for them to say Mario > Wayne There is also some francophone bias in favour of Mario. This is why Lemieux gets considered the GOAT by some people. Listen to the reverence in Gretzky's voice when he talks about Mario. How often do you hear that reverence from Wayne? There is good reason for it. you have to watch the LIVE game to really make an assessment. everything else is just guessing. TV doesn't do the game justice. has Anthopoulos been fired yet? ![]()

Mario had several healthy seasons in his prime before cancer and back injuries really fucked him up. Gretzky was better from a ppg rate in almost all of those years. Playing longer would have boosted his total points definitely, and it is safe to say there wouldn't be a 1,000 point gap between Gretzky and #2 on the all time list if Mario played as much. But besting Gretzky's total scoring rate is doubtful. Gretzky had 9 years in a row where he scored more than 2.xx points a game. His ppg rate was higher than Mario's in the regular season and in the playoffs (I don't know why Jimmy loves to state that Mario was much better in the playoffs it's clear he wasn't in any measurable way). Gretzky also had many more years playing past him prime in his 30s, which dragged down his ppg rate. If Gretzky retired at 31 like mario did , his scoring rate would be insanely high

Our fanbase is like an abused dog out of Michael Vick's basement--we're loyal and come back wagging our fucking tails season after season despite all the shit we're put through with the previous one, so why bother? And I'm sure it's exactly what people like Bettman want if it means leaving playoff spots open for other big market American teams to make deep runs and aggressively try and expand the NHL. ugh the Leafs are officially out of a playoff spot as of last night's 6-1 blowout to the Canes ![]()

I shouldn't just single out the leafs though, there are a few teams that make the most out of the start of the season where teamwork and chemistry for lots of teams just haven't clicked since summer break. (Minny and Colorado being other teams)
