Keith Flaugh is a retired IBM executive living in Naples, Fla., and a man with a mission. He describes it as "getting the school boards to recognize ... the garbage that's in our textbooks."

Flaugh helped found Florida Citizens' Alliance, a conservative group that fought unsuccessfully to stop Florida from signing on to Common Core educational standards.

More recently, the group has turned its attention to the books being used in Florida's schools. A new state law, developed and pushed through by Flaugh's group, allows parents, and any residents, to challenge the use of textbooks and instructional materials they find objectionable via an independent hearing.

Flaugh finds many objections with the books used by Florida students. Two years ago, members of the alliance did what he calls a "deep dive" into 60 textbooks.

"We found them to be full of political indoctrination, religious indoctrination, revisionist history and distorting our founding values and principles, even a significant quantity of pornography," he says.

I thought we had this fight in Texas in the 1990s and won? We need to do it again in FL.

They don’t like things that can promote a better understanding of sex and how to not get pregnant. And they hate critical thinking because it makes children challenge their parents.

I would settle for accreditation of text books by the federal government. That seems to be the place where these groups gain traction.

You might even see pictures of human genitalia in a sex ed textbook. That is obviously disgusting.

And all of the other points are basically "They don't indoctrinate children the way i want them to!"

The assault on public education on all fronts is the most depressing part of modern politics. It is one of the main reasons I did not stay in the field. It is rage inducing to watch people hamstring one of few public services that can provide real job skills and upward mobility. I listened to a report from NPR about Alabama having a teacher shortage problem because they pay their teachers the lowest amount in the entire nation. To resolve this, they removed all the requirements for teacher training and hoped some people from the private sector would fill ranks. This failed because hiring a biology teacher to perform surgery is also doomed to failure. I’m sure it will be another 10 years before they crack the code and pay more for teachers.

Well you know, as a teenager I was always sneaking off with my biology textbook to... do some reading.

Also with a side of indoctrination.

Outspoken conservative commentator Tomi Lahren admitted she still benefits from a feature of Obamacare while arguing against it during a debate with Chelsea Handler on Saturday.

Lahren and Handler faced off at Politicon, a non-partisan event, which features debates, panels, film, and comedy. As expected, Lahren and Handler's conversation turned towards the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

Lahren, who supports Trump, slammed Obamacare and told Handler that while she believes in her right to purchase healthcare, she doesn't "believe it's my right to pay for it for other people,"Fortune reported.

While Lahren continued to rail on Obamacare, she admitted that she is still on her parent's health insurance plan because of it.

"Do you have a healthcare plan or no?" Handler asked Lahren during the exchange, according to Fortune.

"Well luckily, I'm 24, so I am still on my parents'," Lahren said.

The comment quickly drew a response from the crowd, which cheered and clapped.

A key component of the Affordable Care Act is that dependent children can stay on a parent's plan until age 26.

On social media, many responded to the news and slammed Lahren for being hypocritical.

In all seriousness, we had this discussion already when it happened in Texas. It's ridiculous and shouldn't actually be legal.

Do you have anyone in mind you would have voted for over Trump that is a Democrat?

At this exact moment, Zell Miller. Dems have such a limited representation from old school conservatives that could be trusted not to bankrupt us all or advance radical social policies that it's hard. Next crop I'm sure I could point to several.

My dude, the equivalent of that would be for me wishing Nelson Rockefeller was back.

Zell Miller was part of the old Georgia dems who controlled the state for about a hundred years. Then they decided to support what you call radical social policies like civil rights and gay marriage.

This isn't to say that Miller is a bad guy or he did bad things - for example, he led the charge on the HOPE scholarship in Georgia which pays for in-state college for a huge number of students - but in many ways he's far, far from the current Democratic party.

It's just hard to find conservative Dems these days. They were basically all evicted

that is true; just as the liberal Reps were evicted. both parties have been getting smaller in their ideological spread for quite some time now.

Can't be in a party with a semblance of morals. That's politics 101 for the GOP today.

It isn’t even morals, it is just ideology that conflicts with reality. They want to be seen as the party of good management. A lean, mean government that gets stuff done. But in reality, they want to approve wars and cut taxes. They want market solutions to public service problems, but then do not want to regulate the market solutions. The free market will fix problems so they don’t have to make decisions or have responsibility. This is why some of the super conservative states are on fire right now, a complete inability to accept reality.

FL schools are trash, I can't agree more. Now the teachers though, I feel like FL has some great and inspiring teachers. I know I had, but what they're forced to teach is absolute garbage. If you have internet, you're easily able to question the books.

Put in bold the most important part of this and most other debates we have on here. The refusal to accept responsibility for fucking over the country.

I appreciate that Zell Miller was a more or less sane guy. Since the Dem party has moved left socially though, a lot of Southern Dems who were a core part of the party have moved more and more to the sidelines. There still is a niche for them and they can be successful like with a John Bel Edwards (kind of to be seen if he can win re election), though they require different branding than in Miller's time.

On the other hand with the Republican party, the inmates are more or less running the prison. Some of the inmates are white collar, but they're inmates none the less.
