At a Senate hearing Thursday, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, accused Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin of failing to answer his questions about President Trump's business ties to people who might be violating money laundering and other U.S. laws. Mnuchin responded by suggesting Brown "just send me a note on what you are looking for." Brown pointed out that he had already sent a two-page letter. The Senate Banking Committee hearing provided the kind of sharp exchange that underscores the gap between what Democrats in Congress want to know about Trump's business dealings, and what Trump administration officials appear ready to provide. Here's the back-and-forth between Brown and Mnuchin: "I haven't received an answer that I asked for — about potential conflicts of interest and ownership in the [Trump] administration," Brown said, referring to a March 2 letter he wrote to Treasury. The letter requested a "comprehensive list" of the Trump family's "investors, business partners, politically exposed persons and related actors." Such a list is needed to reveal whether Trump's associates and investors have been in compliance with laws related to bank secrecy, sanctions, money laundering and other regulations, Brown said. "Would you commit to us to get a complete list of Trump business associates and financial ties?" Brown demanded. "People want to know about those entanglements." Mnuchin replied by saying he had checked to make sure "my staff had fully responded to all the inquiries from you and the committee, and I believe we have." He pointed to a March 31 letter that Treasury had sent to Brown. That brief letter contained no list of Trump associates. Instead, the two-paragraph response said only that Treasury officials would "work with agency personnel to address and mitigate potential conflicts if and when they arise." Mnuchin then suggested Brown send a note about what he wants, and "we will review internally whether it's appropriate to come from us or somewhere else." Brown again said that he already had asked his question and, "it was not answered." He added that he would write to Treasury again requesting a "complete list" of Trump associates because "people in this country are troubled by the president's business connections" who might be involved in crimes. Mnuchin replied by saying, "I can assure you that if there were any cases that involved the president or any members of his family, that they would be treated very seriously." Source

The Paris Agreement on global warming is “irreversible and non-negotiable”, the European Union has said in a blunt warning to climate science denier Donald Trump. The EU and 79 developing countries in Africa, the Pacific and Caribbean issued a statement in which they reaffirmed their commitment to the landmark deal and called for others to do the same. The Trump administration is currently considering whether to withdraw from the agreement, which committed the world to keeping global warming to as close to 1.5 degrees Celsius as possible. The US President has laughably described climate change as a hoax perpetrated by China, a suggestion one of his advisers later described as an “exaggeration”. Without specifically mentioning Mr Trump, Miguel Arias Cañete, the European Commissioner for climate action and energy, said: “Today more than ever, Europe stands by its long-term partners most vulnerable to climate change. “We, developed and developing countries together, will defend the Paris Agreement. “We are all in, and our joint commitment to this agreement today is as in Paris: irreversible and non-negotiable.” And Patrick Gomes, Secretary-General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP), said: “The longstanding, ongoing cooperation between the ACP group and the EU shows we are serious about addressing the impacts of climate change. “Implementing the Paris Agreement is not only about ensuring the very survival of the 79 ACP countries, but also about building sustainable, resilient and prosperous economies and societies worldwide.” They made the call at a United Nation’s climate change conference taking place in Bonn, Germany, ahead of forthcoming meetings of the G7 and G20 groups of world leaders. The EU announced it would provide 800 million euros (about £680m) of support to ACP countries with about half to be used to address climate change. The Paris Agreement contained pledges and aspirations but work is still being done to develop actual action that this achieve the goals. The Trump administration is believed to be split over whether to withdraw the US as a signatory to the Paris Agreement. Some, like Defence Secretary James Mattis are believed to recognise the dangers posed by climate change – something that has been taken seriously by the Pentagon for years, given the threats to global security. Others are thought to be in favour of staying in so that the US simply has a “seat at the table” during future talks and to avoid paying a diplomatic cost of withdrawing from a major international agreement. When the US and China jointly ratified the deal, Barack Obama suggested it could become regarded as the moment humanity finally decided to save itself. Source All the players you cite are too interested in their own economic impact from customers to products to lift a finger. The worst he'll get is a few very strongly worded condemnations and some threats. Isn't this perspective ignoring the fact that lots of countries have participated in sanctions against various countries, despite the economic impact of doing so? Its not like we only apply economic sanctions in cases where we don't care. I have yet to see sanctions of any meaningful kind enacted on the basis of carbon output. Humanitarian abuses and as a tool in diplomacy short of going to war, for sure. Other countries, who see global warming as an enormously bad, terrible thing, would be more likely to see carbon output as a bigger deal than you do, right? You gotta keep in mind that many governments are operating under the assumption that global warming will be very damaging if not reduced as much as possible. But actually doing something about it and letting voters know they will have to suffer ... this has been hard enough globally to do with ones own citizens, let alone try to raise sanctions for others. When I heard StealthBlue mention Asia, I chuckled to think of India and China pressing the USA to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions. Physician, heal thyself. China takes pollution and carbon dioxide emission very seriously. India's CO2 emission is like 1/4 of the US with 5x the population. Sorry, I hardly know if you speak in jest. India's on a good uptick ... 2015's growth canceled out all China & USA's cuts according to EU sources. co2 reduction seems to be a completely lost cause unfortunately. No one is doing anything significant,it is filled with hypocracy and double standards in every country. Europe is no different then usa in this but Europe acts like they are much better, well they are not. Norway for example filled their own country with green energy and electric vehicles, its a drop in the ocean compared to the emissions of their exported oil. As soon as money is involved co2 reductions are pushed away and I can give a ton of other examples for this. Every small reduction in one sector is nullified or worse by increases in other sectors. The 1.5 degree max for rise in temperature will prove to be completely unachievable , oil production and consumption is still rising every year. The harsh reality is that we wont be in time, that much is clear to me. World co2 emissions will probably keep rising till the end of this century and maybe even the next. Since reduction of emissions has proven to be impossible to achieve (because money is a bigger drive) maybe we should start switching priority from trying to prevent,to trying to prepare for what inevitably will come. Stop building in areas that are potentially threatened by rise in sea levels for example, even though they are often the most attractive areas. I'm with you on expectations. Hypocrisy, double standards, and a rise in emissions until the end of the century. I should start writing down estimates of sea level rise for 2050 now for comparison. Anybody got some lowball-ish ones they want to put $100 on?
