“While the President has the legal authority to remove the Director of the FBI, I am disappointed in the President's decision to remove James Comey from office. James Comey is a man of honor and integrity, and he has led the FBI well in extraordinary circumstances. I have long called for a special congressional committee to investigate Russia's interference in the 2016 election. The president's decision to remove the FBI Director only confirms the need and the urgency of such a committee.”

Serious question for those ITT who think Trump was justified on this one (so far, xDaunt and Danglars are in this category at least). What possible explanation is there for this happening right now? There's an ongoing investigation into matters that implicate Trump's campaign, and Comey is set to testify to Congress about the investigation tomorrow. All of the rationales for his firing offered by the administration are events from last year.
I figured the juicier allegations about Trump were probably false just because reality isn't usually that exciting, but I'm seriously wondering now, why would he do this if there wasn't something to hide?

There are any number of reasons why Trump would get rid of Comey now, some of which are set forth in the letters attached to Trump's termination letter. I'm not going to pretend to know why Trump did it. However, I find it highly amusing that so many are jumping to the conclusion that Comey's termination is the product of some nefarious motive of Trump's to halt whatever investigation is going on into Trump's campaign or other affairs of his. If anything, I find this particular conclusion to be one of the hardest to believe. Trump simply isn't that stupid.

I wonder what changed?
Edit: Trump isn't that stupid? My god the Koolaid is strong.

Trump's Deputy AG only got into his department late last month. If this was his letter and investigation, Trump's people weren't in the justice department to actually see if Comey can function with justice department prosecutors after what happened.

What makes you say that?!
It can also be seen as an incredibly brazen action to protect himself from the Russia investigation.

Trump either isn't that stupid or is just that desperate.

The most innocent explanation in all of this is the AG took it upon himself to remove FBI director comey for legitimate reasons, and this recommendation once reaching trumps desk resulted in an "oh, if you say so, let's do it!". What if Trump didn't realize this is different from firing someone in a business, incompetence might also be an explanation.

But why for something that was done months ago????

The man with the emotional stability of a 6 year old, who personally goes after people who say anything bad about him, who parrots whatever his last contact told him/whatever he saw on Fox News that day, not stupid?

because the deputy AG was just put in, he has good character apparently, and he came to the conclusion that Comey is unfit. I'm not saying this is the reason, but Trump's incompetence of being unaware of the political earthquake that would result, could also be an explanation.

If anything, I find this particular conclusion to be one of the hardest to believe. Trump simply isn't that stupid. Wait wait wait I need to walk through this one. You're starting from the assumption that Trump is smart. Because he's smart, he obviously knows that firing the FBI director in the middle of an ongoing investigation that implicates Trump is going to make everyone think he's guilty. If he was guilty, he would obviously never do that. So therefore Trump firing the FBI director in the middle of an ongoing investigation that implicates Trump clearly proves that he's not guilty.
Did I miss any steps in that logic, or is that pretty much it?
Edit: And having read through as many letters regarding his firing as I could find, which, if any, of the rationales offered for his firing give any reason for firing him now specifically? All of the ones I saw were some variation of Comey's handling of the department last year being bad, a break with tradition, harming public trust in the department, etc. Harming public trust in the department is particularly absurd given the automatic distrust a huge part of the public is going to have for Comey's successor after this.

"Trump simply isn't that stupid." Is a remarkable sentence. I mean the man himself left little breadcrumbs of imbecility by bringing up the Russia investigation in his own letter to Comey.
Every Whitehouse drama show looks tame compared to the poop hurricane that had been this administration so far.
