Now, that alone just proves you're a cunt. I don't go to the docks where you sell yourself to sailors and knock what you do, I'd appreciate the same courtesy from you. Anyway, seeing as you were sufficiently stupid to make a post that bad right under mine I thought I'd have a browse through your posting history. In your entire time here you have made a total of one post which could, in broad terms, be viewed as contributing. Just one. The rest were trash or one liners. You have only yourself to blame for this one. You were doing decently well at staying below the radar up until now.

No news here, unfortunately. Agora Games was responsible for much of the failure that is MLG's website. They messed up the forums, created a useless mymlg, and never really got mlg.tv to a level that should be acceptable.

People who think this is something bad are nuts. Businesses can and should fire failing departments who have to step their game up. You don't drag mediocrity with you when you can find better on the open market.

Another rational post. So nice to see this in what I feared would become "oh noez its teh end of teh esportzzz bubble omgomg" thread.

I guess the question is that of expectations. If a person believed that esports would become the next NFL, or the next NHL, or the next Golf, or even the next Poker, then this is disappointing.

While you can argue this layoff is simply the termination of failed department, when you consider it in the context of MLG slicing off their online shows, GSL's continually shrinking prize pool, a stagnation in SC2 stream numbers (along with a sharp, sharp decrease in youtube views), and a player base that is smaller every ladder season, I think it's fair to say that SC2 has stopped growing.

In fact, I would argue that it stopped growing in any meaningful sense near the end of 2010. 2011 wasn't the year of Esports, it was the year of cashing in on Esports.

Players gained revenue through streaming. In fact, nearly every notable player began streaming in 2011. This wasn't always the case. One need only glance at the streams Teamliquid defeatured in order to see the caliber of streamer which was available. Additionally, popular players were able to avail themselves of largely pointless stream subscriptions with a monthly fee. Finally, player contracts which were signed before SC2 exploded expired. Letting them take advantage of the changed scene.

Leagues could make some money as well, though whether they were profitable is impossible for an outsider to know. In 2011, advertisers could be shown the impressive stream numbers from 2010. Additionally, some leagues also let casters run ads on their own streams to lower a caster's appearance fee. The NASL had pay-for VODS and locked you into a low quality stream unless you paid for a subscription. MLG now had huge audiences paying for seats and buying tshirts

Casters perhaps came out the best. Their appearance fees ballooned, their youtube channels were partnered and their subscriptions kept increasing (though their views were already dropping), and they started getting affiliated with companies like IGN and GSL.

I don't think esports grew in 2011. What created the appearance of growth was the hardcore audience mobilizing to support the leagues, casters, and players who could finally make a career.

So your argument for SC2's growth stopping is based on 3 things:
1) Player numbers decreasing
2) GSL's prize pool decreasing
3) Stream numbers stagnating

I agree with you that 2011 was where e-sports finally started to payoff for many different individuals but I disagree with the lack of growth part.

GSL prize pool decreasing was inevitable. They purposely had a prize pool that wasn't sustainable to increase interest in Korea. While I don't know what GSL's situation is right now in terms of profitability and sponsorship (although I agree it doesn't look good) their prize pool going down doesn't say much. No matter what their prize pool was going to go down.

Stream numbers stagnating is simply not true. MLG's numbers went up literally every single stop this season. They reached all all-time high right at the end. Similarly, dreamhacks numbers were higher for Dreamhack winter than any other event they've run over the year. Aside from those two however, there haven't been any events that have done two comparable events all year: IPL has only done 1 LAN (wait for IPL4 and you'll see viewer growth), NASLs player quality dropped dramatically, IEMs second event clashed with an MLG that most likely destroyed it's numbers. I know this may sound like I'm making excuses, but MLG and DH proved that the market is there for more viewers. Events just need to get everything together. And I think IPL4 will be the next one to break into that little group.

The player numbers dropping is an issue though. Most people don't understand this. Pro players will retire eventually. There needs to be players to replace them. Unfortunately, if the player base keeps decreasing this gets harder and harder. Hopefully HOTS will remedy this.

I think 2012 will be the real test. This will be the year that MLG/DH/IPL need to prove that everything they're doing is sustainable. It's the year GSL needs to finally explode in Korea. It's the year HOTS needs to take this game to the next level and get everyone playing again.

EDIT: Whoops, missed your point about online shows being cut by MLG. I think we should hold off on passing judgment on that until we see what they plan to do. MLG has stated they want to do more events and potentially a bunch of online stuff. So it could be that they want to give us tons of online content to replace the shows.

Great points. But there's a few things I'd like to point out.

1) MLG has consistently missed it's stream numbers projections. For example, for Providence Sundance said in the below interview that he expected to get 300,000 concurrent viewers for providence (4:15 into the video).

Heads of companies don't just throw out numbers willy nilly. They do research. And if they do throw a number out, they make sure it's an achievable goal, because if they don't hit it, the company looks like they failed. And MLG did fail to reach that goal. 241,000 concurrent viewers was MLG's max.

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=292421

And this wasn't the first time MLG failed to reach it's goals. Do you recall when Sundance promised to wear a costume if the concurrent vieweres for MLG Raleigh exceeded 150,000? While this could arguably be classified as a challenge rather than a prediction, the concurrent viewers for Raleigh only reached 138,000.

2) Starcraft is not solely responsible for the increase in concurrent viewership. League of Legends may be almost completely responsible for the that number increasing.

In the same interview quoted above, Sundance said that when the league of legends stream went on, 90,000 people were watching during Providence. League of Legends events often eclipse 100,000 concurrent viewers. So, the fact that there were 241,000 concurrent viewers might mean Starcraft viewers dropped from the 181,000 viewers at Orlando. MLG has not announced how many of those viewers were SC2 viewers. And you have to consider that even if LOL and SC2 weren't streaming at the same time, LOL viewers might tune into SC2 when their game stops playing.

3) Finally (and here's the least important point), MLG was the year end championship with all the hype.

you so wrong on so many levels you stupid LOL fanboy trying to diss starcraft 2.

Stop right there. Sit in the corner and don't come out until you've thought about what you've done.
