How much would a guy with 1500 hugo boss suit have in his bank account anyway? The example I gave was two both extremes, I don't necessarily mean you need to wear ridiculously expensive clothes, but it's true, If you are able to spend some more, then you look nicer. The strangers who doesn't know you first of all judge you by the way you're dressed. Not only in girls position but with other occasions like business related meetings and social outtings same applies. For example, walk in to a jewellery store in 'Hang Ten' t shirt and shorts and browse through the jewels. The next day dress nicer and walk in to the same store and see how the greeting from the store staff changes. The image or the first impression you portray is from the way you're dressed.

This is very very true from personal experience. When I walk into expensive stores wearing stuff my mom buys me (regular 10 dollar stuff) because i'm on vacation or just ended my workout. No one gives a shit about you because they think you're one of those people that go in, look, and leave after looking at one price tag. If I went into the same store the next day wearing my normal clothes i'd get smiles and how can i help you's etc. This same thing can/does apply in MANY situations irl.

But you gotta look some to find nice cheap stuff. I dunno about you but i prefer to waste a couple of hours and save myself some money.

If you have the money to dress nice and enjoy clothing like some people appreciate art or music, go for it. I will not criticize people who wear K-Mart. Just remember that many of the looks being sold by Prada and Christian Dior for hundreds of dollars for a simple item like a shirt were modeled after rock stars like Roger Daltry or Robert Plant in the 70s who bought their clothes from K-mart or the equivalent... I hate people who are poor who try to look rich, I hate white kids who try to be black, and I really don't like people who try too hard to dress according to what music they like. Style doesn't necessarily have to reflect personality unless it's an extreme...

I mean, honestly, caring about your appearance is one thing. It's a reflection of self-esteem, pride and can be a form of individualist expression. Then there is just plain vanity. What disturbes me most about this thread are posts which say that $200 (AMERICAN!) is not an excessive amount of money to pay for a single article of clothing. There really is not that big of a difference, yes they look better, but not that much better. Someone dropped a few quotes from Fight Club in this thread, and while I enjoyed that movie I found its anti-consumer rhetoric to be a little bit over the top. After reading the quantity of these posts I am begining to reconsider. Yes people make snap judgements about you based upon the clothes you wear, and if someone is dressed like shit you automatically take a negative view. And yes, if you enter a jewelry store in a hang-ten tshirt you're probably not going to get the same service as a person in a Hugo Boss suit. But try the flipside; I consider myself fortunate that I have a group of friends and a broad social circle that would think me a pretentious fuck if I spent more on my outfit that bills and food that month. Try walking into your average pub, diner, restraunt in clothes that scream 'look at me - i have money - my life rules' as opposed to a normal, nice outfit and see the response. I can't speak for anyone else but I can easily spot the difference between a person who lets their appearance reflect the respect they have for themselves, and those who try to mask their lack of self-esteem with expensive outfits. I'm willing to bet theirs just a few of the latter in this post.
