If i remember right MLG said they won't upload the replays until the event was over because using them people could hack into their servers and crash the games. I bet that their discovery was that using the replays you can find the IP of the PC the game was played.

I don't want to use it for malicious purposes, but I want to know if it's possible and how.

I think it was because you could find the character code through the replay........ dont think it was anything related to finding the IP adress nor would it matter considering the games were played at MLG....

I doubt the IP address was stored in the replay. The player's account name is, and the 3/4 digit player code probably is/was as well. That could be used to spam the player on battle.net, as per the Deezer/Destiny crapfights recently.

Patch 1.4 should have addressed this issue by now.

As everyone previously has stated you cant find any IP adress but you can find the players nick. Which was a problem in the previous patch.

There is no way to find an IP address from a replay. Only the character names and possibly character code.

Set your status to busy and they can message you as much as they like.'

Edit: I guess the

"--- Only allow friends to send me invites.
--- Only allow friends to send me chat messages."

Is relevant as well.

They did this to protect the player's ID's. If someone wanted to get the IP and mess with MLG they could get it just by viewing the stream.

You can only get the name and the battle.net profile URL ID from the replay

http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/profile/2131517/1/Phaded/

For example, you can find 2131517 and the my nickname Phaded in a replay

From this you can then search the battle.net forums for that user, find any posts that the user has made, then go to that post and find the 3 digit character code needed to add the player to friends list.

If the account has not made any posts then it is not possible to find the 3 digit character code using this method.

That is the only information stored in replays.

The 3 digit character code is not stored in replays.
IP Addresses are not stored in replays.

I am down but I am far from over

Uhh, that would be the IP address for 1 of many servers dishing out the stream. You could disrupt that server, but unless you are a good enough hacker to gain full access to that computer, trace the stream source IP through however many computers are between the stream server and MLG, and then break into MLG's servers you probably can't make much of an impact on MLG with the server IP address.

All you need is hping (You can remotely sniff with this and drop shells anywhere if you know what you're doing!) to get the IP and get all of this done, is all I'm saying.
