I heard it helps seeing cloaked units.

Someone should verify this already
It's almost some kind of myth.

it isnt. shaders have to be on medium at least beacause otherwise the line in the variables "simplifiedclocking" gets set to 1, which makes cloaked units significantly harder to spot

lol i didnt even know this, used low since day 1 beta. changing it doesnt seem very significant though but w/e.

i personally have no chance spotting standing observers/dts with low setting, with medium shaders i can snipe observers sitting in my natural for example. if they move though its no problem with either

The mouse speed doesn't change with FPS like most games, you only lose control when frame lag hits in at those mentioned FPS Drops. The smoothness of scrolling around changes drastically between 20/40/80 FPS however.

There is different types of quad cores, just because its a "quad core" does not mean its good. I run a i5 2400 (which is a quad core) and a 6850 (no sli or crossfire) and i run maxed battles with no problem.

Unfortunately, if you play on all low AND have a low framerate, banelings become difficult to distinguish when they're mixed in large groups of zerglings.

No its true. Especially with death animations. On low settings the units just disappear instead of having a half second death animation that doesn't let me quickly process if I've killed the unit or not.

In my opinion, force fields and stealthed units are much more difficult to spot on the pros stream than on my computer (running everything on high/ultra).
I can no longer rest under the tree of wisdom, since you have axed down the roots feeding it.

I have found that if I put the graphics on low and the textures on ultra... I can see the cloaked units the best. I think I learned this when someone said idra does the same. But I am not sure if he actually does.

You dont need an i7 and/or sli to run this baby on ultra at 60+ fps.

Im high zerg master and I play on ultra. I get around 80fps normally with AA on. Drops down to 50-60 in massive battles (200v200).
I've went to tournaments where I am forced to play on low settings because the computers there couldn't even run sc2 on medium. In those tournaments I did very bad. Im not used to low and it does look like a different game altogether.
I think the reason competitive players use low is because they are guaranteed to play on at least low where ever they go.

Ya, and I have a $180 AMD cpu with a single GPU btw.

So I set my graphics settings to low. But Effects + textures i got on high and shaders on normal. Game looks like on high or better. It's normal?

I set the game to Ultra setting, then switch Shader to Low. It's optimal for my laptop FPS. I prefer the cleanliness looks in this setting. ALL low is too much imo. Looks really weird in my eyes. Even on my desktop I set it to the same setting, but I'm just too adjusted to it.

The obvious factors are lag, distractions, better visibility. But for me personally, i've always ran almost every game i've played on lowest, just because i'm used to it, and it feels good for me. I'm guessing that's a part of it aswell, especially for some of these guys who played BW for so long.

I blame Counter-Strike, god damn 640x480

What? Why would worse graphics lower the chance of being disconnected? That doesn't make sense at all. Disconnect = network, prettier graphics = (mainly) GPU. They have nothing to do with each other.

If you're GPU/CPU/Whatever overheats, you get bluescreen at best, afaik that's gonna shut down your network to.

most of them are streaming while playing. If you try streaming at 1080p in 25fps, you need a beastly machine especially when there are 200/200 fights with spel casters.

when i play in 1080p, i don't have any problems, i am at 25+ fps but if i'm streaming im in 720p and stream at 12fps otherwise it's unplayable

yeah. but you can't see ANYTHING else -.-

but seriously.

low graphics dont't have anything to do with FPS, tournament settings or bad computers or whatever weird reasons some of you thought of.

it's all about the ability to distinguish shit, have the best overview possible etc.
anything else in this thread is crap, trust me.

MC doesn't play everything on Low and he won tons of tournaments.
I'm a making a point here ?

09/13/2011 10:54 AM GMT-4: http://www.teamliquid.net/video/streams/oGsSK
And he plays protoss and use tons of forcefields...

The only 2 reasons why ppl should play on low are:
1° Get better fps
2° They already got used to it since the very beginning, got used to see cloacked, got used to see death animation, got used to blablablalba.

I'm used to see everything on medium and some stuff on low, now that I got a better computer I'm playing better with everything at High and still getting 50 - 120fps.

Any other reasons are just thoughts implanted by the masses.

The only thing that makes a difference is playing in 16 instead of 16:10 since you lose some screen view. (and that's a proved fact)
In the beginning there was nothing... and then exploded

This, some people find it easier to make out what's going on on lower settings. It's all personal preference though.
