Hey guys, I was wondering today, What qualities do you need to become a pro gamer, I have thought of some but do some other people have something to add to the list?
-Determination -The ability to continue when it's not going that well -Intelligence

LOTS OF LOTS OF FREE TIME.
|
Lots of practice and the willingness to sacrifice everything to become one, it doesn't take a lot of intelligence to play starcraft at a pro level, hense why a pro will still rape you while he is drunk and you are sober.
|
mostly lots of time to practice and motivation to continue after tough defeats. it helps when the culture you are raised in doesn't look down upon professional gaming as well. there is a good reason why foreigners couldn't crack the korean proscene.

Agreed.
Pointless to even mention passion, dedication or talent without THAT prerequisite.
I haven't played a single 1v1 ladder game since school started. Q_Q

Yeah, I agree with all of you guys that Time and dedication is the most important by far. But, the difference at the real high level is in fact talent, because all will most likely spend about as much time as the other training.

The only reason why Koreans are much better than everyone else is because of the fact that gaming is their job. They have nothing but practice time, and their entire day is revolved around gaming. Us foreigners cannot compare to that, because the support for E-sports is not even close to the same level as the Koreans. We all have jobs or school to go to. :/

Yeah, for college students, I don't know how you can have a good gpa and pursue a technical degree and dedicate 8-12 hours a day to starcraft. I don't think the pros really have that different of qualities than other people. Actually, in some cases, I feel that progamers have the wrong qualities, particularly in their decision making and logical reasoning. That goes for anything though, not just gaming.
Also, consistency is huge. That's really why I respect Idra a lot. He does the same thing a lot, but he does it because he's practiced it so much in so many situations and doesn't have to rely on much risk when it counts.

By that you mean dedicate SC2 as your job. There are very few top pros that has a job or is going to school.

Well, to be a pro gamer, these are the traits that you need -
1.) Determination 2.) A lot of free time 3.) Intelligence 4.) Creativity
Things that you don't need, but help -
1.) Manners
Meh, lots of practice :3

Hmm yeah,
Anyone else still has an idea, I know free time is the most important, but some things will help.

Great and Quick decision making ability.

You shouldn't whine like a bitch when you lose. Find out what you did wrong. I see this happen all the time and it really pisses me off.

...free time is NOT the most important thing, wtf.
Being near the top level of any activity is proportional to the amount of effort you're willing to put into said activity. Getting to the absolute tip top requires a little talent and depending on the activity ingenuity.
The fact of the matter is the great majority of people (I wouldn't be surprised if that number is >98%) don't even have enough willpower to do things they enjoy doing, let alone force themselves to do something they won't enjoy.
The significance of effort cannot be understated - if you're average or below average at something it's because you're not trying hard enough. Period.

@FC.Strike
Yeah, I absolutely agree with you, but what are the qualities that take you even further than the rest of the hard training players?

I think creativity is the biggest factor to becoming popular, which leads you to getting sponsored. No offense to TLO but he's not the best currently. He IS one of the most popular due to his very creative builds and everyone, myself included, loves watching his games. So I would say creativity and daring to try them out of critical matches is the most entertaining and thus the most important trait of a pro gamer long term

For good traits i could add. Enormous willpower. Stability.
People who are suggesting Talent or something.....get real. Talent is an excuse for a week mind.

pretty sure fc strike hit it on the head. discipline to practice, definitely one of if not the most important qualities. it's a form of talent by its own right =P

Winning a lot
that pretty must sums it, people are different.

Perseverance Effort Dedication Mothership Rush
I think it's fair to say once someone has committed themselves to being a "Pro Gamer" they have all the free time in the world. Generally you aren't going to school, or working a steady job. It all comes down to how much effort you put in day in and day out, staying focused on getting better, analyzing your weaknesses. There are going to be slumps and hard times like in any other career choice in life you just have to be dedicated. Problem is if you have a problem with a co-worker or specific project it comes and goes/ you can avoid said worker, if your struggling with the game it becomes a test of willpower and grinding through it.
|
The most important quality is dealing with getting enough financial support to give enough time to practice.
With free-time you play 8-10 hours a day everyday and own everyone thats all there is to it.

I mean, ok, but realistically speaking, the amount of effort people are willing to put into their leisure activity has to be understood as reasonable. No matter how much effort I put into this game during my free time, its still restricting to the amount of time I have, and frankly it isn't enough to compete with people who have the time. If by "trying hard enough" you mean I haven't dropped out of grad school to play a video game, well, FINE but be reasonable.

totally agree.
I would add
1) discipline, like harass but not push yourself too far and lose unit (day9 call it as "safe damage") 2) knowledge and experience: other players rep can provide you lots of things like how to deal with LT thor as z (idra version = gas steal + fast muta vs select in MLG D.C.)
ánd tons of practise...ofc.

effort and willpower are the most important ones, but for being at the very top, lots of talent is required aswell. dont listen to that guy who says talent is an excuse for a weak mind.... do u seriously think if hyuk practiced 2 hours more a day than flash he would be better than flash?
