Are zerglings worth making?

I made a topic a while ago asking what changed with zerglings, and was told they attack at something like half the speed they did in BW so their DPS is nonsense. For their minerals they have decent HP but they don't do every much, especially when Terran has a 125 HP tier 1 unit. Against Terran you want banelings against marines, and mutas against marauders, and against Protoss you want roaches mostly (from what I understand). Should you spend money on zerglings? In BW if I had excess minerals, or excess larvae, I would make a big batch of zerglings and suicide them into an expansion as a harassment technique. That doesn't work in SC2. I'm just trying to find out what zerglings are good for. I know they're one of the only fast units zerg has so they can be used to surround a blob, but other than that micro trick what are they good for?

edit- I mean worth making past the early game when they are the only good unit zerg has against reapers or so on

It depends on your unit composition. I personally always like lings, especially when I upgrade them.

You have to make the lings most of the time, at least a few. A group of six speedlings can run past a bunker or something and mess up quite a few SCVs before the marines can catch up to kill them. Also, they are good for early scouting and keeping on eye on the watchtower. Not to mention in later game a group of speedlings can tear through thors and colossi rather quickly.

Another good tactic is to hide some lings near their base, when they push, invade or punish their expansion. Yeah, they are weak, but for 50 minerals you still get two lings. With the speed upgrade and the attack upgrade, they chew through stuff very very fast. I also use at least a small group of them.

Zergling+roach is needed for a gateway push if you don't have lair tech up or you need to stall for time. Roaches alone won't win in a battle against zeal/stalk/sentry, especially if he gets force fields down to stop your roaches from kiting.

Trust me on this; speedlings decimate stalkers. The fast surround will force a P player to bring back the zealots to fend off the zerglings, and that's when you move in with roaches.

If you have lair tech, speedlings + muta is just a nightmare to deal with as a protoss player on the defensive.

They are a very fast and cheap way to scout if nothing else.
zerglings > stalkers
roaches > zealots

personally i love ZvP for that very reason.

I dunno, 50 minerals for zerglings is less HP than 75 for a roach, and with zerg you basically spend your gas on roaches or mutas until the late game when you get ultras. I think one roach does better DPS (due to not dying) as 2 zerglings.

Zerglings might not be good at doing anything, but they're the only zerg attacking unit that doesn't cost gas. You want zerglings to tank damage so your gas units can survive long enough to do meaningful damage.

i thought zerglings did good dps?
not much else for 150 minerals rapes a mineral line

If you think playing with under 100APM is noob try having a ping of 450. Welcome australians to BNET 2.0....

they did good dps in BW but not so much in SC2, especially considering like I said T has a 125 HP tier 1 unit

earlygame you need them to survive.
midgame they do great vs. medium sized armys (surround/chase)
lategame they are a good and fast mineraldump which acts as meatshield or to draw tank fire

You say u need banelings to counter marines..How can you even get banelings without building zerglings? Lol..

zerglings are very useful. They add alot more uumph to your overall army and do amazing vs marauders...

Well it's pretty bad considering that both the Zealot and Marine got greatly buffed DPS-wise, and Zergling's attack point went from 0.6(0.4 with adrenaline glands) to 0.7(0.59). Especially the Adrenaline Glands is really awful in SC2, which is the biggest difference. I'd normally say that they aren't worth it but that you really have no other choice. Actually, after the numerous nerfs Roach kind of could cost 100-0.

Not a Zerg player myself. (I play Terran) But I find Speedlings + Banelings to be a quite effective early game strategy for Zerg. Keeps me a little on the defensive while you tech up.

Also, most ZvZ games I watch happen to have a lot of Zergling play in them. =)

Actually Zerglings completely destroy Marauders (Unless they are backed by Marines).

2 Zerglings kill 1 Marauder with complete ease (I confirmed this with the Math involving all the stats and the unit tester).

In theory all you need is Zergling / Baneling to take care of Marine Marauder Ball. Mutalings are very effective for a few reasons, they tie the package together. It allows you map control forcing the Terran to Turtle.

I think Zerglings are not used enough IMO they are incredibly effective and quite easily can be amassed. I tend to use them as the main DPS while any other Unit is support. I'm quite out there though I keep trying new builds and such to do some wild stuff and see how it works.

If you calculate the resource efficiency of the combat units in the game based purely on their stats, zerglings come out above every other unit in the game. The trouble is that they are melee only (so they take hits on the way in), take up a lot of frontage (so they have trouble getting in position in large battles), and are a swarm unit (meaning they are vulnerable to splash).

Zerglings are useful whenever their efficiency outweighs these disadvantages: as flanking units in a battle already in progress (negating taking damage on the way in and vulnerability to splash), whenever they can get a good surround (negating the frontage problem), as harassment and skirmish units, etc.

This is very true. They are situational, though I still think very good units especially with Metabolic Boost on Creep even as melee units they can cut the distance so fast and theres just so many and easily reproduced, this is why I like following the mentality of wait for the Prey to walk into your turf before confronting the Terran Army right away.

I stick to Harass and hit and runs to wither them down, denying any expansions is always a plus. Splash damage is a pain of course but you have to think are you running them into the siege tanks or when the siege tanks are on the move? Thats usually the key time to attack.

Not saying they are the best unit just not used much from what I see of many replays, people just get enough to live then tech for higher tier stuff. Not a bad thing I'd say it's just a bit of untapped potential.

Like Nydus worms and such One hero is TLO with his Infestor-Ling Combinations make me smile!

In my opinion they are totally worth it to survive to your game plan, As long as you survive to get to the tech and army composition you want thats all that's needed to be a real pain in the ass to any of your enemies.

Short answer: Yes
Long answer: You are out of your mind if you don't love zerglings and will most likely lose many a game before you come back to their quick asses. I would venture to say they are one of the units that benefit the most (if not the most) from upgrades.

Really? I can't believe you're even asking this. Pfeff is right. It's not a situational unit, it's a core unit. Especially considering Z isn't mineral starved anyways. Make your damn lings and poke/backstab/scout/etc. with them.
