I feel no sympathy for Bashiok. Giving out your real name on the internet is asking for trouble, especially when gaming communities are known for being full of pranksters. Yeah it sucks he got bit, but that's what happens when you jump into a pack of wolves just to prove a point.

He didn't try to prove anything and him stating that you can get banned for publishing private information is JUST him stating the rules. God you guys are dumb.

Ok people now know his real name (it was never hidden before) and found his Twitter, Facebook, etc.. now what happens? Nothing.
Blue posters real names will be shown when they post just like anyone else, they are not shocked about this, it's not a revelation. apparently he had to close his twitter account and block his phone. so something happened already. and you can be sure that more of such stuff will happen. the outcry on this is HUGE.

Doesn't look closed to me.
And even if he had closed all his public outlets down, the only reason he would is due to the massive spam i'm sure he's getting now from douchebags worldwide who think they're going to make a point.

i feel bad for bashiok. but... really i saw this coming

poor bashiok. it was a poor decision by blizzard to make the real name mandatory, but he definitely doesn't deserve that attack after all the help and time hes spent with the community.
honestly, i'm kind of repulsed by the shit people will do

I grew up in the south. When someone said "watch this," we all took a step back.

If that does not make the think twice about this "feature" I don't think anything will. I mean, Real-ID is a great feature when it comes to actual friends. People you know and trust in real life and with whom you want to stay connected across games. However, BNet forums are NOT a trustworthy place (space?) to post your real name.

well, i hope he doesn't get knocked down by some nerd rage kiddies.
Anyways

Good lord.
This post says it all.
Anyone that says this real name thing is a good idea needs to take a look here. While this was demonstrated to some effect on the other TL thread, the info they have on this guy is just off-the-wall now. Mother, brother, wife, address, pics.
What a way to prove a point. This is an awful idea.
I actually feel bad for the guy. Martyred by the internet in the name of Activision-Blizzard.

n1 exactly what blizzard deserves as answer for this bullshit

@ Mortician:
Although I created this thread, I did so in order to discuss and show the dangers of revealing to much personal information on the web. This is NOT a place to actually post personal information on poor Bashiok. So please refrain from doing so, he has learned the hard way how bad this Real-ID feature is already.
Discuss the feature and its consequences plz, don't spread Bashioks personal data. Thanks.

I believe the term is QQ RiIP Micah Whipple.

Wow lol, I kinda feel bad for Bashiok. I mean seriously. Not something i'd want to happen. Poor guy
Edit: Anyone wanna give him a ring? ;(
|
Well it looks like Blizzard has two choices:
1. Forget about the Real-ID altogether and learn to live with the occasional spammer / harrassment OR 2. stick with Real-ID and be responsible for real life harrassment of random people (their employees probably get special privileges to NOT show their real-ID).
I know which one is worse, but some people are thinking with their wallet and only about short term gains.

Looks like this is the latest import from China: Human search engine.
Bad call blizzard, bad call. What the fuck were they smoking to come up with the real ID idea?
