I really really hope they dump the id idea though. Disclosure of dentity on the internets should always always be the individuals free choice. If they are genuinely worried about the quality of their forums, they should consider other solutions. (Take a page out of TL's book - this site is amazing, the way it's run. Seriously. You ppl are amazing.)

Keeping it for those people who actually have real friends to play with is a cool feature

Forget about the Real-ID altogether and learn to live with the occasional spammer / harrassment OR 2. stick with Real-ID and be responsible for real life harrassment of random people. I know which one is worse, but some people are thinking with their wallet and only about short term gains. They're not responsible in the least, no one's forcing you to post on their forums. You agree to the EULA, you choose to let your name be shown. They're not the first forum to do this they're just by far the largest. I do think they will end up ditching the whole concept though just because of the nerd rage it's generated.

They will reconsider publishing the real names of their staff though I wager. Because with staff, all the idiots out there have a reason to harass them right of the bat.

Normal people just see that it's his real name and say: oh. Imagine you play a game of SC2 vs a spoiled brat and for some reason he gets incredibly mad at you, partly because you 6 pooled him, mostly because he simply is an idiot. Imagine him digging up you personal information. What if this happens in the US, you live close to him and he has a weapon. Sure it is absolutely ridiculous, but we all have heard about people killing because of video games. It also is only one of the most extreme scenarios, anything could happen. I think it's normal for Bashiok to rage hard when information about his children was brought up; it sounds like a serious threat in the ears of a parent. Overall though I think it is good to show them what the internet is capable of. Though I am surprised that they didn't see this coming.

I feel bad for him. Then again maybe blizzard will rethink this whole thing after one of their own employees got harassed.

If they cancel this real ID crap before it's implemented it will be just because they're sick of hearing the QQ about it, not because omg someone found Bashiok's Facebook!! Oh come on ... sure you sign the EULA and arent forced to post on the forum, but do you honestly think that young children are mature enough to recognize this danger? Blizzard doesnt put an 18+ sticker on their games if they dont have to ... No, I think that's what parents are for. You do know about parents right? If a child runs out in traffic and gets hit by a car do you blame Toyota?
