Blizzard Entertainment recently came forward with new rule changes that enforce me to use my real name (Real ID) when I wish to post at their forums. When I was subscribing originally, I was not made aware that my real name will be used as a Real ID at the time when I provided it, furthermore, when I tried to access my account, I was forced to accept new TOS (Terms of Subscription) before I could either cancel, change any details or anything. Blizzard Entertainment is forcing me to reveal my name in order to participate in a paid-for service (you can't post on forums w/o a subscription), without the option to opt-out. Any correspondence to change my name has been nullified by Blizzard Entertainment so far. I would like to keep my identity private and keep my social life separate from my professional life.

So, why do we suddenly have names? Who am I?
I'm Eidan Walsh. I work as an engineer in a Power plant. I've been living in Ontario, Canada, for the last 36 years. It's here that I met my wife and started my family. People sometimes ask me where I'm from. I'm from Canada, born here and lived here all my life. They give me an odd look though, as if they didn't believe me. It doesn't matter all that much though, nationality never was a big deal around here. We all live our own life and have our own passion. As long as we are all happy together, nothing's wrong.

As far as I know, there is no gaming community that requires you to display your real first and last name; usually they ask for it but they never display it to the public.I'm not sure what Blizzard's mindset is on right now but it doesn't seem to be making the majority of the fanbase and community very pleased.

as much as i support anonymity on the internet, i'm having a hard time giving half a crap about this
are people just searching for ways to hate on blizzard? are gamers just insufferable?

Is the sky really blue? The world might never know.
It's just one huge step in the wrong direction. Plus its pissing off 3/4 of the community. I just dont see in what way this will contribute to anything.
Give me one reason, as to why this would be a good idea.
Edit: Hey, at least in this thread i have the illusion of being a korean pro gamer. Nifty.

The next step will be to merge your Facebook account with your Battle.net and so on =). I dont know what kind of masterplan they have in their mind but I dont like the indications at all. Theres no way they add the RealId just to stop forum spam. Whoever believes this should get some common sense

this is beyond the "haters gunna hate" argument. you havent been messaged after beating someone in a match? Well, now if someone doesnt like your opinions on forums (btw it starts with just the forums, give em an inch and theyll take a mile) they could do whatever they want with your name. Some companies will not give you a job based upon info they find on the internet about you. Also what if someone "happens" to bump after an online altercation, being during a game, on forums...whatever. Wed all like to say that the entire SC community is cool and leaves their egos at the login screen but i wouldnt trust people to know my real name.

You know, one of the most fun things in warcraft 3 was showing off your icons. Now, you can't really show off your icon on the forums cause hardly anyone will post there with this RealID thing... and you can't show it off in the chatrooms cause there aren't any. I wonder what the point of icons are now?

I don't trust this Facebook/Activision-Blizzard relationship at all. Facebook's already been known to sell out every piece of information and privacy to someone with a dollar bill. There is no assurance that the corporate wigs of Activision won't force Blizzard's hand and make a killing off of stealing all the private information of millions of people. Even outside of the inevitable gaming discrimination we'll get from potential employers, stalkers, and cold-hearted people out there, things will not end well. It's called calling your friend and asking him what his username is. The end. Some convenience is not worth sacrificing liberty for.
Ball's already rolling though. Odds of them breaking contract is zero. Best we can do is troll them like we never trolled before. Everyone needs to make proxy facebook accounts.

Yo, this is the story all about how My Real ID made some !@*@ go down I'd like to take a moment, just listen to me And I'll tell you all about how Blizz took my privacy
In West Dun Morogh, born and raised Adventurin' is how I spent most of my days Questin', groupin', craftin' my gear Grindin' Ashen Verdict rep up to Revered When a guy named Robert Kotick, up to no good Did somethin' nobody understood He showed up on the forums, said we'd use our real names And that "Now everyone who googles you will know you play our game."
I whistled for a blue and when he came near He said they'd been plannin' Real ID for over a year I said bein' stalked and @#%#ed up wouldn't be funny But Bobby said "NAW FORGET IT, YO HOLMES IT'S MORE MONEY"
I went to my account and canceled all my data And I yelled to Bobby Kotick, "Yo holmes, smell ya lata!" I looked back at an Azeroth with no security And thought 'Goodbye WoW, I'll keep my obscurity.'
