I whistled for a blue and when he came near He said they'd been plannin' Real ID for over a year I said bein' stalked and @#%#ed up wouldn't be funny But Bobby said "NAW FORGET IT, YO HOLMES IT'S MORE MONEY"
I went to my account and canceled all my data And I yelled to Bobby Kotick, "Yo holmes, smell ya lata!" I looked back at an Azeroth with no security And thought 'Goodbye WoW, I'll keep my obscurity.'
This made me lol
Anyway, what kind of names do you think will show up on the forums? Don Johnson x 400? Paris Hilton x 1.000? Oh, yeah.. And about 10.000 Mr. T's..

I think this is worth posting eventhough it is about Wow these kind of security leaks can happen in sc2 aswell:
This bears being repeated. This is IN THE GAME NOW.
If your account is hacked, suddenly the hackers have:
1) Your real name
2) Your e-mail address linked to your blizzard account because Battlenet was made mandatory
3) Your password
Not everyone has authenticators. Not everyone can buy authenticators. There are some countries that the Blizz store will not ship to.
To get your real name, all you have to do is run the following script, which is part of the base UI:
6. Real ID is optional.
Only the illusion is optional. Your real name is linked to your toons and already exposed via addons even if you never opt-in or use the Real ID feature. You can test this by running the following:
/run for i=1,100 do if BNIsSelf(i)then BNSendWhisper(i,"RealID whisper from yourself..");break end end
While this only displays your own real name, it does demonstrate the the connection has already been made, without your approval. And that it could be accessible to a third-party addon developer. When Blizzard merges accounts with Facebook (their next move), will the connections to Facebook friends already be pre-established, even if you don't opt in? If so, how will Blizzard/Facebook use that information?
That is an excerpt from an article by Mary Landestrom.

I'm glad they're doing this.
If you're so worried about having your name shown don't post, problem solved!
If can't take not posting and you're so mad about having your name connected to the things you say on the internet, whatever you were going to post is exactly the kind of thing the rest of us hate reading and maybe you shouldn't be saying it in the first place.
To those upset: Your name isn't anything special and you're not anything special. No one gives a shit about tracking you down and more people in real life hate you than ever will over the internet. Get over yourself.

Are you actually stupid or just plain retarded. What do I do when one of my game breaks down after patching or it doesnt work and I have to go to support forum and need help? I dont want to post with my real name on those forums cause I dont want people to know my real name, as it then becomes available on internet and people can google me, future and current employers can google me and see where Ive posted and that can cost me my job potentially or even worse some freak gets angry at me and decides to get medieval on my arse....you are a true moron....

are people just searching for ways to hate on blizzard? are gamers just insufferable?
Hello Richard J. Hanson, living in Millstreet 45 and working in the Garden avenue as COCKSUCKING LOSER, i got your information from Joe grunny, that you were accusing as an insufferable gamer. He also told me about your phone number and keeps delivering pizza to your house. He also told me to say that you should shut your fagass applesucking dickhead mouth and that he is also going to fly by with an airplane and have an "meeting" with you.
But i also want to tell something about me, since we are all friends in here arent we? Trolls wont post here, because that would show off their real name :O! What a good idea this Real-id system is! Im feeling friendly and warm inhere! So lets get started beloved friends! My name is Ronald Myer, and im working in an Police office! My job is to help our good guys in finding the bad guys! Hm, something about my life? Im living in blindfool street 66 in an nice little house! Its only 5m² big, but the guy who sold it to me said, that im perfectly safe from too much space! Ahhhh, sweet home sweet home! Also some people look weird at me all the time, sitting on a bench next to my house, all the day! That they dont get hungry hahahaha! But i have also so many friends there, like Emma niggerson, which got almost burned to death by an oven and published her story on facebook and twitter! It was so dramatic and full of action, that i cried two days long and just had to be her friend! I also update all my personal info at facebook atleast one time a day, because it helps me to get new friends! So lets enjoy our stay here with our real names displayed! Dont be shy, because you are just making friends here ok? :D
User got his facebookpage lockeddown for this post.

Or hey, how about using unique identifiers, so we can all post, and we still have that much-needed accountability that keeps people from being douchebags to each other?
Nah, that just makes too much sense.

The name change in this thread goes to show how it wont be a huge deal in the blizz forums.
When a blizz employee says "this is my name lololol find me" of course they are asking for it.
When you post in a forum where EVERYONE has a name, how do you know if its real or not? Assuming you are a crazy person who wants to track down someone who doesn't agree with you, how do you know its even their real name? You don't.

Nicholas Close is an awesome name.
I wonder if they will display your nickname next to your real name or maybe some randomly generated Identifier, because with just the real name there will be no way to tell one John Smith apart from the next one.

its easy to have this attitude when your identity has yet to be compromised. its also not about anyone thinking they are special. if this is really your attitude then i suggest you actually read some of the articles posted in this thread.

Well said sir!
Your most humble way of telling us the truth, which we couldn't aspire to even see in millions of years, has now lead me to a new conclusion!
I, in the measly way that i am human of no importance in this world with only people hating me, the Internet is the only place my solemn soul can escape the horrors that this world brings upon my very existence!
But now even peace i had while trolling the internet is but a mere mirrage. An illusion. Forgotten history...
But really, cant you see, that this is only going to be uncomfortable in so many ways? And cant you even see one step ahead of this? I thought you were plaing Starcraft. Seeing your opponents next move is crucial for survival, you know.

Joona, you don't think women open themselves up to harassment by having their real names put on a forum? Keep in mind that the answer is absolutely yes.
You don't think some people have very unique or easy to locate names, or that people have any legitimate reason for not giving out that information to literally every single person who they walk past? Especially in connection to a VIDEO GAME that is supposed to be an escape from reality?
Really?

And tbh this change is just so absurdly unneeded compared to just making you pick one nickname to post on forums with. You are then accountable by the forum community by your words and it can't really spill into your RL. I mean truthfully I'm not so afraid of having an axemurdered walk up to me from a post a made on the forums, nor that a future employer googles my name, sees im a gamer and goes all "omogmomgomg" but since there's no real reason to risk it or open up that possibility this is a crap move by Blizzard.

All new accounts created from now on will indeed be of a Fake Name, thus negating the entire point in the thread.
Unfortunately, most of the accounts were created way back when, when privacy mattered and Blizzard had a good reputation. We didn't know they were going to change things from underneath us to this extent.
My account name is true and accurate, I could never have guessed that Blizzard would sell out to the devil and would have ever taken the steps to violate my privacy so much.
Thus, I have to close my WoW account, and get all information deleted. My SC 2 account will be entirely fictional, assuming this survives.
