It's interesting to see how from TLers' reactions, many are nothing more than elitist, more educated versions of bnet forum-goers.

wtf its a gaming board not some law school board...

Are you all really sure nobody will post anymore on the forums if the changes would be accepted ?
I think you all truly believe something that could be totally wrong... Leaving that assumption aside, the only problem I see is a "privacy" kind of thing. And I'd agree : privacy should be absolute on the internet (even if it's not), but let's face it : social networking changed it all, believe it or not. And gamers are now the next (comprehensive) targets.
Logical.

I don't see a big problem here. Actually it could reduce pointless posts, imho.
Why are people afraid that someone would know where they live (even if someone would find out which I doubt)?
With Blizzard policies nobody would be allowed to make fun of anyones name most likely. And you can always make up any name/surname, besides lot of them stack in one country where they are used the most anyways. I don't see how name and surname can be used against a person without knowing social number (personal real-life id).
In the end I couldn't care less. I really don't like forums and especially big game forums were a lot of idiots attend to the homeboy fests. I guess, TL is an exception on many levels.

I'm all for this. The b.net forums are the worst wretched hive of scum and villainy you will ever find. They need SOMETHING to make them suck less.
I am beginning to believe I am like the only person on the internet not scared of my name. Patrick Francis Soulliere II. It's not a big deal....

our privacy is being kicked by everyone nowadays.... i guess im not suprised. They support facebook, meaning they cant care for privacy rights in a big deal. havent put in my real last name anyways.
In Germany Sc2 will be USK12 that means u can leagally buy it under 14 years. but u cannot make legit contracts under age 14 in germany. i think there will be legal issues.

I think that what Blizzard is doing is just getting rid of all the stupidity. By putting names on there, they will have higher quality posts, no more of this offensive 4chan crap, more purposeful posts, less trolling, etc... I think they are setting a new standard on how to run a forum honestly and how to do an online service in general. We'll see how it plays out in the next couple years, I'm honestly okay with this. I have nothing to hide.

You can have accountability in plenty of ways other then giving out your personal information. Nony has not made any real point.

this way people wont be able TO POST useless THREADS this is a great move by blizzard, people will finally THINK before posting, im so glad. NO MORE TROLLING!! NO MORE!! YES, U HEARD ME , NO MORE!

Another swing and a miss by Blizzard....
A better way of removing trolling is to be extremely strict...i.e. 1 warning, then 1 perma ban...there goes your money

The Bnet forums are the worst, most poorly moderated forums of anything online, ever. Filled with angsty 14 year olds who just want to piss other people off under the veil of anonimity. This should severely limit such posts.
At the same time it's going to drop general traffic immensely. Maybe that's a good thing... ooooorr instead of forcing evry single customer into exposing his real name if he just wants to post a bug in the forums they could just hire some students to do some moderating? you said it yourself. bnet forums are the worst moderated forums ever.wheres the problem with forumbanning evry tard in there? btw whats even more fun is that one of the guys i used to play wow with got instaforum banned for posting someones real name once (some server flamer war...whatever). now they the force the exact same thing on evryone in their forums. hilarious :D
I'm sure if hiring a bunch of angsty students to moderate the forums fairly were an option, Blizzard would have done that. Interestingly enough, I was reading LoL forums today and noticed they do a thumbs up/thumbs down rating system for posts that seems to carry over. I like that idea a lot more because people who just troll get continually thumbed down until their posts just stop appearing by default. This lets the community choose what's valuable and what's not, since you have some of the same offenders trolling the forums day in and day out.
For the most part the only people complaining about this change are the nerdrage trollers themselves. Most non-noobs never even glance at the bnet forums because they know what they'll find.

What's with the extreme paranoia?
We know the real names of tons of Starcraft 2 pros - every time a pro is interviewed their name is given out. Sean Day[9] Plott and Kevin QXC Riley even told us where they're currently living - Harvey Mudd
You guys seriously think that posting your name and gamer tag on the internet will have this dire of consequences? Believe me, if you've already posted enough publicly viewable information about yourself to get tracked down to the address and phone number JUST FROM YOUR NAME AND GAMER TAG, then you're too stupid to be posting in a public forum to begin with.
lets just say certain people on a certain website specialize in these sort of things. we all know who they are.

I don't understand why the don't just have stricter posting guidelines much like on teamliquid. You say something offensive or create a useless topic without searching, you get a temp ban...
|
It's not about accountability. I don't understand how people do not understand that you can create an account with a fake name and address for bnet. My current account isn't my real name or address simply because I value my right to privacy.
What I do in my own home is my own business. What if the next step is releasing the demographic information that we all know Blizzard collects about who plays for how long and on what days, etc? How about what is said in game, on their forums, etc? What if the next step is that they record and keep a log of all the voice chat in game?
My point is this; at what point do you stand up for your rights?
|
The person who came up with RealD is a dumb fuck. Seriously.
|
Guys, if you really think someone will steal your id off bnet, get identity theft insurance for $5/mo and forget about it.

You are missing the point, the pros are already known already so being more known isnt a problem for them. But a lot of people don't want to be viewed as hardcore gamers from their "real life" friends.

if u check on blizz forums, they are getting trolled real hard as we speak.. some guy opened, i swear to god, an entire page of threads about battle.net being up or some iteration of bitching about real IDs... hilarity...
