As technology improves I think we'll see this world wide. Good first step by Blizzard.
Your resistance only serves to make my carapace harder.

if employers are searching for you on the internet, they will probably google search it and come up with a facebook page. This is already able to be integrated with Bnet 2.0, so you could be pegged as a gamer, and possibly deemed as irresponsible. Now, if you post in the forums, you are even more linked to gaming.

There will probably be less activity, but the quality of posts and the amount of thoughts that go into a post will drastically increase.

There should be an arena thread where terrible players who think they know what they are talking about because they are "#1 platinum" can bo5 people who actually play the game well. The losers name should be added to a list so people will know to take their posts with a grain of salt

i completely agree with these thoughts though. This, i believe, will be the good part of having names on the forums.

Possibly, but this isn't the appropriate battlefield to fight that war.

For these fine gentlemen that can actually travel the world engaged in esports, having their name publicized is a boon. For the common 30+ year gamer at night, responsible adult at day, it is a stigma.

Okay so this thread is out of control. To simply sum up my thoughts on that :

- No stalking down bullshit or anything like that : most of the time I just do no want my name to be revealed unless it is needed.
- CD-Keys are attached to a particular account. Ban / delete / warn this account.
- They could simply become stricter.

There is no way this is a good idea if it's mandatory.
Bring back Bnet 1.0.

Yea those "simple" solutions will probably work. Should YOUR CONSUMERS have to deal with it? No. Plain and simple.

I was unaware that the forums were an integral part of my Starcraft II purchase.

Personally I am tired of anonimity giving people on the internet the capability to behave like jerks. Besides, a name is not enough information to track someone down. And if you don't like it, don't sign up for the official forums.

I'll repeat what someone else said earlier. If you think everyone against this is just a cowardly fool then give your name or address in this thread.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

If I'm right, I just scared the shit out of myself with how easy that was.

And that information is scary how?

So it is you.

Awesome... we've just demonstrated how easy it is to find someone.

I've never done that before, it took 5 minutes, and in another 5 minutes I could probably have your address - or at least something close enough that with some extra effort I could figure it out for sure.

From there, what else?

How can people suggest that isn't an issue in an age of identiy theft. Never mind the potential for random crazy people to take it upon themselves to "get back" at you for whatever they feel is worth their effort, whether it be physically, via some petty crimes or harassment.

You think it's a stretch; but it has happened. Worst case scenario is a reality: people have been killed by people who have tracked them down online - some of those crimes committed over what most "normal" people would consider completely banal issues.

Am I suggesting our lives are in danger for having our names in a forum? No.

Do I think it's completely unnecessary and carries risks that outweigh the benefits? Yes.

I found you in no time. I also know about a couple of your hobbies, I know your age, and I have a general idea where you live - all from info that, as per Blizzard's wishes, will be mandatory if you want to post in their forums.

If SC2 players can't even use their real names when talking to each other.. how is SC2 as an eSport ever going to get enough public respect to make it big outside of Korea?

"Potential employers googling your name and declining because you play games"
I'm sorry but, if you meet the requirements of what they are looking for experience and skillwise, a google search on what you enjoy to do in your own time will not affect your chances of getting hired and if it does, it's against the law (Well, in Texas it is). Take them to court if you feel that the reason they did not hire you was because of a google search. They would have to explain the detail of your decline to the judge with ample proof and if it is not sufficient enough proof to back their reason, you have yourself a successful lawsuit ..

This is the naive view of what's going on. Practically speaking, many employers use google/facebook to find out information about applicants. Furthermore, they don't have to mention to you when you are "no hired" that they did such a search on you name. Even furthermore, there's a strong argument to be made that information via google/facebook is publicly available and thus admissible in such decisions (analogous to how an employer can judge you if you come drunk to an interview vs. professing your love of keggers and frat parties on your facebook page).

I already post under my real name (Mulloy), so this will have no effect on me. I can see the desire for anonymity, but turning the official forums into a ghost town doesn't seem to be beneficial, however that will be the likely outcome. People will just have the attitude that their primary discussion will be on forums like TL or other third party forums, while the official forums will lose a lot of content, but still have a draw as the official place to voice concerns. This is how it already seems to be, and in the long run I don't see it having a significant impact beyond reducing posting frequency on the official forums.

I have been known, on occasion, to dapple in fancy hats.

The first and most significant change is that in the near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID -- that is, their real-life first and last name -- with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it. These changes will go into effect on all StarCraft II forums with the launch of the new community site prior to the July 27 release of the game, with the World of Warcraft site and forums following suit near the launch of Cataclysm. Certain classic forums, including the classic Battle.net forums, will remain unchanged.

The official forums have always been a great place to discuss the latest info on our games, offer ideas and suggestions, and share experiences with other players -- however, the forums have also earned a reputation as a place where flame wars, trolling, and other unpleasantness run wild. Removing the veil of anonymity typical to online dialogue will contribute to a more positive forum environment, promote constructive conversations, and connect the Blizzard community in ways they haven’t been connected before. With this change, you’ll see blue posters (i.e. Blizzard employees) posting by their real first and last names on our forums as well.

Whatever they are smoking, I fscking WANT IT! This surely will reduce trolling, but activity will be reduced to almost nil.

Edit:
Does this mean that they are going to make our names visible on the Sc2 beta forums, or does this only concern new forums created after the 27th?

Whatever, I am not going public with my name in that context. Still too much of a stigma connected to gaming in many circles, sad but true.

Seriously, you do understand this is all about the ongoing spamming (well it has been like this on and off for about a year) in the starcraft 2 forums? I'm glad they are doing this change.

EDIT: Hmm... well, I also like this because I recently got banned there . But that would NOT have changed my opinion on it
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Shi- accountability for ones actions!!

Personally i wouldn't like that just because i like to not give away any information about myself for free, don't need stalkers and robbers knowing where i live or my name etc.

Also, I don't understand why it's BLIZZARD's responsibility to moderate all of the crapholes that come out and post on their forums. Is it not reaonsable for them to try and make people RESPECT each other through the internet?
I think blizzard is trying to move toward a more humane internet and I approve.

It's not an integral part, that doesn't add anything to your argument though.

A name is plenty to track someone down. It's happened many times. Get name, facebook, use deductive reasoning. If I have to explain any farther down the line then that, then you are just not worth talking to.

No one has been able to tell me why just having one name per CD-key is not enough of a deterrent. Please do.

I feel like this has probably been said before but I have to get this out there .. just in case..

They are really pushing this Real ID crap on us, and in order to befriend people etc with RealID you have to give out your e-mail...

This e-mail is the same e-mail you use to log into WoW/SC2 etc. Does anyone else see the flaw here? Sure you can grab an authenticator and all but it seems like it's only a matter of time until account hacking becomes even more prominent than it is now. As always, I could be completely and utterly wrong and I hope I am.

Just my two cents :x

I don't see the problem. I don't know if it's because the older you get, things like this is trivial or if it's because a first and last name is not enough to cry over. I'm ready to debate any discussion as to why this would be a bad thing. Most of the things that are mentioned in this thread are taken to the extreme.

"People can make death threats to me if they know my name."
Contact your local authority for information on what you can do in the case that a threat on your life is being made. They will assist in handling the manner which in some cases, can include them locating where the threat was made and making the appropriate moves afterwards.

"Can mess up your life by emailing your school with a bomb threat under your name"
They would need more than a name to send you to jail or make any disciplinary actions towards you. They make a threat to your school, if it's not from an email address you own, then they have no proof of you sending it. Sure someone can spoof your email address but guess what, they would need your email address to do so and still, would need proof they it was sent from your inbox including the IP it was sent from, mail delivery routes, etc.

I really can't see what the big deal is. Most of the things you guys are saying can be handled using real life methods to resolve. If your facebook is private and anything else you do on the web is private, I don't see how additional information other than your name would be obtained. Yellowpages? You do know a quick phone call to them will allow them to either remove you from their listing or make your information private. Again, it all comes down to handling your issues responsibly and using the correct chain of command to get a problem resolved.

Or you can simply not post on their forums...it's not mandatory for you to do so...my 2 cents.

Yea those "simple" solutions will probably work. Should YOUR CONSUMERS have to deal with it? No. Plain and simple.

Plain and simply, they disagree with you, therefore your assertion that the consumers shouldn't have to deal with it, is wrong. You're pretty nerdraged as evidenced by your constant posts on here, so my suggestion to you would be to go outside, and do something else for a bit. You yelling at the top of your lungs isn't going to change the fact that you can no longer troll bnet forums.
