Does anyone know what type of eardefenders the professional starcraft players wear in the *sl tournaments? As far as I can see, they wear some sort of low profile ear defenders and headphones underneath (I assume to block out distractions and/or audience reactions).
I'm looking to buy something similar for my commutes but all I've managed to find are shooting range ones which are bulky and designed to block out just the gunshot noise but let through speech. I need something more compact (like the pro SC players') and block out anything as much as possible.
Anyone know names or brands of such eardefenders?

In the US, it is illegal to wear any sort of device that would impair your hearing while driving. This includes headphones.
Just FYI.

Do you really need earmuffs? Not only does it look stupid, but when I wear my fitting in-ears I can't hear the person right next to me talking. (even without music it blocks out almost every talking noises) Are all persons screaming/using air hammers on your way? Or do you want to block out all noises without hearing music?
(and yea, don't use it for driving - I hope that's obvious anyway)

Why don't you get some in-canal earbuds? They block outside noise so you hear nothing but your music and they don't look incredibly stupid either.

O_O never knew they made sex toys for your ears.
OP I don't think those kind of headphones are comfortable at all ... they pretty much squeeze into your head as much as possible. Maybe try getting a pair of headphones with a noise canceling feature(although those are usually pretty expensive not really sure what your willing to dish out).

Wow loads of replies thanks.
I need something to block out the daily public commute (who drives with eardef....muffs anyways, I've seen one idiot with earphones once but that's about it). Years of overhearing IQ-destroying conversations are starting to get to me and buses aren't getting any quieter.
I've looked at noise canceling headphones but thought I could probably get the same effect by combining cheap earmuffs and decent earphones. I know that earmuffs look dorky but the ones I see in tournaments seem to resemble headphones (I think the look smaller than the bose qc 15s).
also, music is a secondary requirement as i'm trying to read up on my cert exam books and actually hear my own thoughts! I've never worn in ear phones before and not sure how much noise they block out (e.g. screeming schoolgirls re: twilight actors ) without music or if they are comfortable at all

I personally use Skullcandy brand earbuds. I picked them up at Bestbuy when I worked there and they seem to cancel out noise pretty well. They were $18 when I got them, but I think the ones I got normally retail around $30. They also come with multiple ear fittings for different sized ears and a volume control. I personally recommend them.

There are some excellent noise cancelling headphones you can buy, although good ones cost quite a bit. Better than earplugs imo.

Noise cancelling =/= noise reduction, which is what in-ear canal earbuds do. Since these go in your ear canal like earplugs, they basically block all sound except from the earbuds.
Even better, you can make your own with the cheap foam earplugs:

Use with any cheapo earbuds you have lying around. Or if you want something nice that doesn't break the bank, Sennheiser CX-300's are good for around $25.

I agree with everyone who mentioned in ear headphones. However, please, do not get the etymotics. The weird 'phalanges' hurt like hell, don't block out noise, and are overall just bad. I believe they did come with foam ones which were a lot better, but the sound quality isn't good. There is little to no bass. I personally use Denon AH C551's, they are awesome, great sound quality and really block out almost all sound when i'm listening to some music, even on low volume. They are a bit pricey though, I got lucky and found some on ebay for ~$50, but they usually retail for much more.
prochobo mentioned sennheiser cx-300's. They are good from what I hear, but I've also heard that they are counterfeited quite often :/. But Sennheiser is a quality company with low prices.
