do you micro your workers when you have 9 workers mining?
when you have 9 workers, they will start to overlap or wait if you dont attend to them. if you do micro them, you can make it so that there is less overlap/waiting/moving around. i think 3 workers is enough for 2 patches and 12 might be all you need at one base. if you micro your workers at 9 10 11 and 12, you might be getting about 16 extra bucks per mine/return cycle
would it be better if the minerals were placed such that two workers exactly would efficiently mine one patch?

Why would you try to make workers more efficient by microing them, imo it makes them less efficient because of time to make movement and time it takes to click twice. Also, it's pretty much impossible in a game more than 2 minutes long. I always thought that about little over twice the amount of drones on the mineral patches is about enough, although I just build thm out of excess larvae
It could be that I just didn't fully understand your question...

i confess! i do it, although the benefits are probably not as much as you stated ;o
i will try to explain:
if you can, you time it so that the next peon outta ur cc, nexus etc will reach the mineral patch exactly the same time at which the peon currently mining from that patch will be done mining
if that makes sense
:O

dude studies have been done that say up to 20 or 24 miners can mine efficiently. i have started rallying all my nexus's to my expands (of they are close) its so easy and u can micro/macro look aat ur natural and there are about 12 probes produced and waiting there in about a minute. its very time efficient if u dont want to maynard then have to click ur miners to ur minerals for all yur expands

the only amt of workers u could truly say "never go over" would either be the amount that takes up so much supply that u no longer have enough units to wni or the amt u need to efficiently mine the amount of bases u will ever have at 1 time in order to win, other than that, its a simple decidng if u want to make that worker now or if ur better off with some force, which depend on the pace of the matchup

I 'micro' my workers until I start doing things other then just spamming on my workers.

i micro'd which patches the workers go to until i was too busy to do so.

I don't think 3 perfectly microed workers are enough for 2 patches. Often with the farthest patch of a position 2 workers can mine it without ever interfering. But 2 workers per patch is for sure close enough to optimum mining (=non-stop mining on each patch) if microed perfectly (ie put 2 workers on each patch and don't let them change patch). But that's impossible micro for a human player.

i have better things to do that micro my 9th, 10th and 11th workers
