I assume the main goal of this phase of the beta was to ensure that the service would be stable even with a relatively large number of users, but apparently it's hard enough even to get things up and running at all. Even assuming that the bnet servers becomes somewhat more stable over the course of today, and that phase 2 is extended right up to the launch date, is 16 days really enough time to ensure that things are working properly? Yeah I agree, I think they're pretty much screwed for release date. Can't seem them delaying it though, so we'll just have to put up with terrible service for a week or two. I believe Phase 1 was for balancing and bug fixing, whereas Phase 2 is for stress testing and tweaking. That would fit with a typical product launch, at least.

You'd have to do a full database search every single time (a few weeks after release, that could be a million rows) to check if the number is taken.
SQL database usually generate unique id for any entry, no duplicates and it works at a glance. And when you start to fill entries it adds them in order, starting from 1.
You would do a search for the username picked and then check those rows for the randomized character code... He was arguing that it would take to much server power to do that for every character created, i don't see how the uniqe id fits into that... sure the database is fine but you could still have two users with the same name and code.
