Coming seemingly out of the blue, the StarCraft Superstars tournament was announced nearly two months ago - It boasted that the winner would receive, among other things, the chance to room, train with, and become a part of the Korean StarCraft team E-Stro. A rather strange format, especially when considering what was at stake. No qualifications were held; sixteen players were chosen to participate in a double elimination tournament, with the winner taking $500. E-Stro was then to choose a player from the top 5 to become a part of their roster. The top five also got the priviledge of playing (getting trounced by) the Korean E-Stro players.
And that player is none other than IdrA, who dropped only a single game in this tournament. Love him or not, you have got to give him credit for this win, and this opportunity to be one of the few American players to join the ranks of a professional StarCraft team.
Because of the delayed results, there was some concern that E-Stro would back out of taking a player to Korea. IdrA is, however, currently scheduled to move to Korea after finishing the winter semester of high school. He also mentioned the possibility of taking the GED rather than finishing this year, meaning he could be in Korea as soon as January. He says that he does intend to take progaming seriously, and will delay college if necessary. He added that Daniel Lee (The E-Stro coach) "is very understanding of a kid with a dream, so as long as I don't make absolutely no progress, I'll probably be able to stay as long as I want. But if I realize I'm not gonna do anything and I'm just taking up space, I won't prolong it."
On the whole, he said the tournament wasn't too hard, which is to be expected when going 10-1, but did attribute some of his wins against Skew to getting lucky with initial build orders. He will switch from PvT to TvT once he makes the move to Korea. Since he already plays TvP, he says his mechanics are strong, but he currently lacks game sense in this matchup. IdrA said it's hard to get good TvT practice, as foreigners rarely play the matchup, and it's not worthwhile staying up until 3AM to practice with Koreans. He closed with "I figure all of my matchups blow compared to the progamers so it wont be that big of a deal."
Congratulations to IdrA, and good luck in Korea!

Congrats Idra, and best of luck over there. Even if you don't cut it, the experience should still be awesome.

Im sure the college would think you'd rather play video games than go and get an education, and therefore not accept you.

if you have a good gpa/sat scores does it even matter if you get a ged instead of a diploma?

uh its not really him "going and playing a video game" its him going to another country and playing professionally. Colleges would probably view that kind of a thing with high regard as he is extremely unique and can bring fame to a university. But even if that isnt true I just think characterizing it as "playing a video game" grossly underestimates the magnitude of this honor. Dropping out of a term of highschool to do something few can ever do is not stupid. It'd be stupid to miss this oppurtunity to see a new part of the world and play the game he loves professionally in the name of maintaining his proliteriate life and droning on like so many sheep.
Oh and GL greg. You will really grow as a gamer if nothing else That being said I expect you to play me still AND get me games with some professionals.

Doesnt matter if you are impatient, TL.net can be respectful. This event was put on by PR. He should announce the conclusion. Deleting the voice of the host and making one yourself is disrespectful and rude..

See, what you just posted there is what a rational person would have posted. I can read that and realize I'm going to have to wait for the E-Stro site to be done. I also think holding onto replays for over a month is ridiculous. Just upload them somewhere for the time being and then you can post the news and replays elsewhere after the site is ready.
"Be patience" or "worrying about it will only make it seem longer" is something you tell a group of children to get them to stop bothering you. PR doesn't have to worry about us bothering him any more.
I'd prefer to continue this via PM, as apparently all I can do today is derail threads.
Seriously, good luck Idra! I hope you get some broadcasted games, that would be awesome.

As much as I'm glad to see another foreigner in the Korean professional scene, and how much I'm really into it myself, I just can't see an Office of Admission accepting a player who dropped out of high school to get his GED, move across the world to play a computer game.
I use the term playing a video game, as opposed to professionally master the techniques of strategy, mechanics, etc... of a renown sport. It's because in the United States, those who play video games a lot are still being put down as something like fat nerds who are cheeto covered and zit faced.
The honor of going to Korea is grandeur, and I strongly support Idra in doing so, however the fact still lies that he is just playing a video game. University admission offices, I hugely doubt, will see someone who they accepted, only to not finish graduating, getting a GED and claiming to play a video game in Korea. What would their response be? It's obviously not my call, but I still can foresee something like a letter stating that since he did not graduate, and got his GED, they will have to re-review his admission, and make it harder to get accepted.
EDIT: inc, I like the song in your sig (short stories with tragic endings), been listening it on my playlist for such a long time.

All I can say is Caucasianasian notice the difference between your assertions and what actually happens when IdrA does obtain his GED and still gets into a great college. There are these things called conditions, and the condition of IdrA's situation is far and away unique and seperate from the "fat zit faced nerd" who would drop out of HS to "play video games." You seem to fail to address one of the main premises to my other post, that is that IdrA's situation is extremely unique and profitable. I would imagine the 3-4 colleges (or less) that he applies to have NEVER had a student explain to them the reason for not completing the last term of an otherwise stellar HS academic run being a professional gaming stint in another country. And yes, they will be made aware of these conditions.
|
most schools allow you to defer admission, doubt the reason really matters. getting a ged could be a sticking point, which is why im not gonna do it until i know the school accepts it.
|
Good luck to you IdrA! enjoy yourself over there, i know i would.
edit: err.. if it even happens, i have no idea how all this GED, college, semester, terms blabla etc. works.

Incontrol is pretty much spot on. While what you say is true still in America, this is completely different. If you look the admissions people right in the eye and explain to them confidently that you're going to another country to pursue your dream as a professional gamer, they will be incredibly intrigued. I still talk about starcraft to whatever randoms I might meet when I go back to the states, even fucking girls. I have never ever ever gotten a negative response, and they are always interested as fuck.
But if it's all done through writing then it might be a bit harder. Also no idea how ready IdrA is to proudly exclaim to the world that he's a pro-gamer.
Last time I was in the states I was at a bar/party with my brother, and I was being a loser drinking alone on the wall at one point, and this girl that I felt was out of my league came up to me and was like..."hey whats wrong?" I was like "Well normally I would have fun but I live in Korea playing video games, so even if I did manage to pickup a girl I have no car, I have no place to stay, and I don't even know this city well enough to find a fucken motel 8...plus my mom is picking me up early tomorrow morning to go to the airport....so it's pretty much pointless to try or care tonight." Which henceforth sprung a long conversation about starcraft, videogames, korea, and how nerds end up owning the world then I realized I was pretty much in her pants.
Until I realized the very line I used to start the conversation and get her interest was fucking true. Whoops : (

I'm guessing you're not on a college admissions committee, so I doubt you are an expert on them or how they measure kids. Are you suggesting that the college admissions process is materially influenced by stereotypes of video gamers, about things like physical appearance or because video games are "put down"? That's pretty ridiculous. You really think colleges look at your admissions file and give two shits about whether your hobbies make you look cool?
If Idra has a good SAT and GPA up to when he left (I'm assuming he only has 1 semester left given his birthdate), I really doubt the issue will make a difference. They have 90% of your grades to look at. Even if it does influence an admissions board, it'll be the OTHER way, as it'll make him stand out rather than hurt him.
Frankly, I don't think you have any clue about what colleges look at when they consider kids for college. Making a statement like "I don't see how any college would accept you after this" is just ridiculously broad and ignorant, not to mention very likely wrong.

I agree with CaucasianAsian. Greg obtaining his GED instead of a diploma could have a profound impact on his acceptance to the college. To a college, it looks bad that he couldn't finish one semester of high school, and to top it off, it was for a computer game. Personally, I do not see Greg's decision as a bad one. However, the truth is the system is ignorant, shallow and to the point. Colleges will see video games and GED, and will automatically have a negative outlook.

I was merely providing a counter argument to the opinions of many posters in the thread. It was more of a hypothetical situation. I saw that you were only going to get a GED if you got permission from the college.
|
I just realized Idra's my age.. and he's doing something I would never do
Good luck Idra, you better win a televised match before coming back
|
Some of you really need to learn how to mind your own fucking business.

Fuck just wrote a long post and deleted it T_T;
summary of what I wrote.
1) Schools look at more than just GPA and SAT, they want a unique student body. Being a progamer is something that makes Idra stand out of the crowd, because it is a mathematical certainty that thousands of kids have the exact same GPA and SAT scores no matter what his are. So Idra has a huge plus now that nobody else can claim
2) Most schools are flexible once you've been admitted. I got into a school that I couldn't afford to go to at the time, and they agreed to let me in the next year once my financial situation improved.
3) Your first semester of senior year is your last "official" semester as far as colleges are concerned. What happens 2nd semester doesnt get factored into your GPA... colleges just expect you to maintain your current grades 2nd semester (if yo udick around and fail all your classes, your admissions could get cancelled). So Idra can probably work something out to either take the GED or come to some other agreement.
All in all, Idra is going to be fine, and probably get into wherever hes applied to assuming hes a good student, which it seems like he probably is.
PS. what college are you hoping to get into Idra?

Well that's good. congrats on the tournament, and good luck.
I know I'm ignorant in the course of how colleges accept students. But it's still just like 4 months left until graduation (if that) and he decides to drop out and get a GED?
Maybe finishing high school online is a choice with you (it is with the school I go to) if the colleges won't accept a GED or you dropping out.

Props and goodluck idra. On the offtopic of him not finishing highschool it doesn't matter at all. He can do 1 of 4 things: A)take his GED, B)forget about it and college, C)Take a smart kid test(similar to GED but better in most circumstances. In CA we have the CHSPE, I took it junior year), or D) finish the last semester of highschool in some nightschool (Sally Struthers ya'll) with other adults and get his diploma.
PS- The only problem I've ever had with the CHSPE certif. is when I tried to sign up for the air force. Since it is a government thing its different requirements than most things. All I had to do though was get like 50 credits/units in college and it was avoided.

I just watched some of the reps. I enjoyed them. They put op a good fight.
One of my friends once asked me why SC progamers show no emotion at all. I guess we are used to football(soccer) players going absolutely apenuts while the game is still going on after scoring.
