Every night when there are enough players who are willing to play (even during ASL nights). If there are a lot of players available, multiple proleagues are run concurrently (as many as 3 per night). If there are not enough players, no proleagues will open.
Rough start time is late evening in Korea and usually goes well past midnight KST.
Are there different types of Proleagues?
There is a rough split between the top "major proleague," the 2nd level "K league" and the lower "moonlight proleague" - but the boundaries are not well defined and there are a lot of hybrid proleagues
In the past there was a big funding gap between the major proleague and the K league, but these days funding tends to be more level (on some days K league is funded better than the major proleague happening on the same day)
How are these organized?
A player will "open" a Proleague, and then invite other players to join, usually eight players in total (occasionally 6 players and rarely 10). Players are not invited in advance, invites are mostly based on who is streaming at the time.
How are these funded?
The player "opening" the Proleague usually has already been given some base funding by their viewers (it is not a good look to open a Proleague without having some money lined up already). Once all the participants are invited, there is a fundraising period of several minutes where each player appeals (or begs) for donations on their stream.
Each player is expected to bring back at least 300 star balloons per winner - so for a 4v4 Proleague, each player will need to raise a total of at least 1200 star balloons (300 star balloons X 4 winners) in funding. (Very roughly 100 star balloons = $10USD)
If a player can't reach the expected star balloon amount through viewer funding, they will simply put up their own money so they can participate.
How are teams picked?
major proleague - players are supposed to be the best so teams are usually picked on 자연 사다리 (literally "natural ladder") system - all players are in 1 pool and are divided completely randomly
K league - more emphasis on balance, even at the invitation stage the organizer tries to avoid inviting anyone too strong or weak unless they have someone else they balance out with. Most of the time they will pick 2 players who are relatively well balanced to serve as captains and then the rest of the teams are picked taking turns (뽑기 "selecting" system).
Of course there are a lot of hybrid arrangements depending on the personnel, if major proleague has 2 members who are perceived as weaker than the rest, they sometimes separate those 2 players and then randomly divide the rest. If there's only one player that's super strong in K League, they will usually let the other team pick the next 2 strongest to try to balance it out.
What is the competition format?
A team needs to win 2 out of 3 sets to win the Proleague
1st set is always an "entry" proleague best 4 out of 7 games. Each team simultaneously puts out an entry of their 4 players, which are the matchups for the first four games of the set. For Game 5 (if needed) each team uses an online program to randomly choose a player to play. For Game 6 (if needed) each team uses the online program to choose randomly among the 3 players that did not play in Game 5. Game 7 (if needed) is back to using the online program to choose randomly among the 4 players. The map pool is predetermined but the order is randomly chosen after the first 4 matchups are already set.
2nd set has some variation. The major proleague usually does a winner's league as the 2nd set. The K League usually just repeats the same format as the 1st set. Occasionally you will see a loser's league format.
The 3rd set (if necessary) is a single winner-takes-all Super Ace match where each team randomly picks their Ace. In Proleagues where there may be some balance issues, there may be bans permitted to avoid an unbalanced Super Ace match. K league sometimes has the worst performing player for each team come out in the Super Ace match - the Narak ("hell") matchup
The winning team wins all the star balloons raised, the losing team gets nothing.
How do I watch?
Check the live streams around late evening in Korea, and look for stream titles that have "4:4" or "프로리그" (Proleague)
While one teammate is playing, the other 3 teammates observe the game and discuss/cheer/ridicule in a discord call
You have up to 8 POV to choose from in each Proleague. These days, the highest fundraisers are given the observer slots where you can see the supply and resource counts. Some players are great streamers who put in a good effort to show the score and who is playing (sometimes even in English), others don't really care. Try out a couple of players and see whose observing style you like, or check out the FPV of the current player.
Purpose of this thread
This thread is meant to serve as a place for everything related to these daily proleagues. This includes posting the notifications when the proleague starts, discussing the games live as they happen, and collecting the results and VODs after they finish.
Additional content might include making it easier for someone to post the spoiler-free VODs to the Small VOD Thread, calculating the various statistics (player, race, map win percentage), adding the matches to the Liquipedia, etc.
Team 1 did a reverse sweep in set 1, coming back from 0-3 down, and went on to win set 2 comfortably. MVP: Mini (3W/2L) & Bisu (2W/0L) Worst performer: Queen (0W/3L)
Would be cool to have some overall standings to keep track of individual player's team wins and win-loss records. Protoss players are really on a roll! For Aiur!

The Koreans have a huge table updating this daily. Think I can (shamelessly) pull it off every one or two weeks to update here xD.
I love this so much. Spectating adds the positive social aspects of the streaming format but the stakes make the competition interesting. Also the random teams for the top pros and more balanced for the lower level is a great idea! Thanks for compiling this, will definitely be tuning in.
Team 1 won 4-3 4-2. Mini the MVP (5W/1L). Won all his PvPs, then beat Soma in probably the Game of the Day, but then lost to Light on 76 after trying some sort of a joke build.
Tie after 2 sets. YSC edged it for team 2 in the Super Ace. Effort despite going 3W/0L couldn't lead his team to victory, courtesy of Piano and Barracks losing all their TvPs

I'm sorry, but this thread will not be a spoiler-free zone. This thread is also planned to be a place where people can discuss the games as they happen.
The best way to not get spoiled is probably by clicking on the links directly in the OP for each day, and not scrolling down. Or wait to see if someone reposts the VODs to the Small VOD Thread.

I myself don't have a problem with putting spoiler tags in every post, but not sure if everyone else can follow as it may discourage people to say something. It's a similar problem with every ASL matchday thread as well.
Maybe the best way is to not scroll down after you see the matchday post. Anyway, let's not make a big deal about this shall we?
Looks like we dont have Major Proleague today but the ongoing K-League is pretty intense atm.
It's a collection of every Proleague dated back from 2020 that Mini participated. Thankfully he played in like 90% of the Major Proleagues so there are only a few missing.
This is amazing, I look forward to watching these games on the new maps. Tysm for putting this together, I haven't followed any Korean pro games besides ASL
Queen > Best Royal > Stork Mong < Soma Jaedong < Rush Mong < Rush Queen < Soma
I believe this is the first TvT on 76 and it seems like the meta is: Dont even bother with ground units, just make a lot of Wraiths and Valkyrie and play it like a ZvZ. Hilarious.
For something a bit different, K League (ft. Mini, Effort) incorporating teamplay matches for their 2nd set today, including 2v2, mouse-only 4v4, "Team melee" (2 players each controlling each side of a 1v1), Fighting Spirit Survival (1 vs 3, no rushes for 5 minutes in beginning)
This kind of format is kind of a hybrid between proleague and what the Koreans call CK

Mong about to throw this game vs Soma despite a big early advantage
I always wish the pros mix it up for the Proleagues with that CK format, maybe once a week or so.
A while ago there was a time they regularly played that map designed specifically for balanced 4v4 (don't remember what its called) which gives really insane games. Like, if after 2 sets they're tied, let's go for that 4v4 insanity for the super ace.

Yea some rich viewers who are teamplay fans sometimes donate enough money to influence the pros to include some teamplay matches
personally I'm not a big fan of teamplay (mostly because I don't really understand the strategy behind it) but I like the team melee with 2 teammates controlling one side and the Sang-Con (1 teammate controlling the workers and making units/buildings and other teammate doing micro)
Tie (2-4 4-2) after 2 sets. Best (MVP) won the super ace for Team 1, going 3W/0L himself. But Mini contributed an important part with his 3 kills streak in Set 2.
Since this is unusual format like the CK I won't "officially" update it here but yeah they should also do more showmatches like this. Always curious as to how the pros perform with their offraces.
Soma <Retro> Best Sharp <Neo Heartbreak Ridge> JYJ Kop <Dark Origin> Hyuk Light <Vermeer> Mind Soma <Sylphid> Mind Sharp <76> JYJ Sharp <Nemesis> Best
So apart from Light who is a superior player to Mind and also had a time playing Protoss as his main race, 6 out of 7 times the player who picked Protoss lost.
Tiny sample size of course but there's nothing in this result suggesting that Protoss is the easier race compared to the other two (like, if that is true, the player offracing Protoss should perform better than the other two)
also, turns out Soma pulled a Nexus first cross spawn into Carriers but still couldn't beat Best's Terran.

There are no strict rules or anything, it's mostly based on invitations and availability
Generally the split is like this:
definite major proleague level (good enough to always do random draw ladder system)
In-between level (not out of question to do random draw ladder system in major proleague but not out of place in K-league either)
T: Sharp, JyJ, Ssak P: Shuttle Z: JD, Action
Everyone else will only participate in major proleague if there are not enough people, and usually they need to be balanced out with someone else (usually can't be included in random draw ladder)
Other way around happens also, if there are too many good players available and not enough slots in major proleague, the ones that can't get invited to major proleague will usually get invited to K League that night instead
Effort is a special case, he purposely refuses to play in major proleague (I believe due to his wrists) despite being good enough to be in the random draw ladder system. This leads to playful accusations that Effort and Sharp are intentionally "parking" themselves in K-League to have imbalanced matchups (and have better chances of winning money).
On January 17 2023 23:34 BLinD-RawR wrote: Is there a difference between K-League and Major Proleague or are they just different names?
Redknight explained it in details a couple of posts up there. Basically Major league is for tier 1 players, K league is for tier 2 players. Sometimes you have moonlight proleague or G league for tier 3 players (like Scan and other amateurs)

In-between level (not out of question to do random draw ladder system in major proleague but not out of place in K-league either)

I'd add Mind, Mong, Free, Stork and Shine to the in-between list as well, although their level kind of fluctuates a bit depending on how active they are at certain time.
Team 1 looked a bit lightweight compared to Team 2 with Shuttle and Stork, understandably losing set 1 2-4. Then they went 0-3 down in set 2, but current ASL Champion Royal came out and performed a reverse kill-all.
In the super ace, a semi-retired Stork who couldn't qualify for ASL anymore, somehow managed to take down Light, winning it for the "underdog" team.
Such a monstrous day for the 2 ASL finalists. Royal performed a kill-all in the KCM finals, then followed it up by another kill-all in Major Proleague, while Rush also unbeatable in his clan showmatch.
Queen and Stork on same team = awkwardness as they still have not fully mended their relationship
They had a couple of proleagues where they didn't say a single word to each other and took lots of bathroom breaks, total awkwardness hell for their teammates trying to avoid dead air

not sure of full details but apparently rumored to be from Queen making fun of Stork's off-race play by combining Stork's name with female Starcraft player's names as a diss (but some people claim there are other reasons for animosity)
Awkwardness was most public during when Queen picked Stork in the group nomination for ASL S12 and they could barely look at each other
but on bright side it seemed their interaction during today's proleague was a slight improvement from past proleagues, there was one a while back where Royal (extremely quiet to begin with and much younger) was stuck in the discord w Stork and Queen and it was awkward AF
Ive got a general question for anyone who might know...how is the super ACE match decided in these..is it a randomizer? Bcuz it looks like its often not the 2 strongest players, some of these picks are not ones I wouldve chosen at least lol

Redknights have it answered in the op:
The 3rd set (if necessary) is a single winner-takes-all Super Ace match where each team randomly picks their Ace. In Proleagues where there may be some balance issues, there may be bans permitted to avoid an unbalanced Super Ace match. K league sometimes has the worst performing player for each team come out in the Super Ace match - the Narak ("hell") matchup
Generally if all 8 players are deemed equally strong (relatively) they'll pull out the randomizer. This would lead to cases like yesterday where Stork played Light, which on paper looks a bit imbalanced, but hey, who would have known the result?
3 proleague night w K League and moonlight league also opening
The main reason strongest players don't volunteer to go out for the Super Ace match is because the way Korean culture is, if they confidently volunteer to play and then lose, they're going to get sh*t on by the viewers and the fans of teammates they let down. Better to save face by reluctantly going out after being randomly selected, you won't get sh*t on as hard if you lose.
Use of the ladder randomizer makes K league in particular very luck-based, lot of nights winning team is determined by how many times Effort or Sharp is randomly selected (good result) vs. how many times players like YSC are selected (bad result)
In major proleague Shuttle is infamous for the "ㅈㅈㅇㄷ" short for "점중엔딩" = "점중" (Shuttle's nickname) + "엔딩" ("ending") because he tends to lose a lot in the Super Ace Match and thus ends the proleague with a loss for his team (he also wins sometimes in epic fashion)
Quick question...how do you prevent cheating in these kind of online leagues? A player can just use a second monitor, or simply their phone, to view the livestream of their opponent, right? Or they can just have a friend sitting in the room giving a simple indication like where the opponent is located on the map...Or what tech choices he made...

Pretty much an honor system with knowledge that any cheating would mean getting blacklisted
They've been playing for money online for years with the sponbbang system way before these proleagues were even a thing, I think people are relatively confident that people are playing honestly
Thanks guys! Would it be much to ask for a game recommendation (1 star to 5 star for each game), side by side with the game result post? With 10-15 games per day it's hard to watch all of the games. I know it's a lot of work. Great job anyways!
Yeah even I don't have time to watch all of them so it's hard for a rating system but I will put a note next to a game every time I see a good one. Off the top of my head, Soma vs Mini and Rain vs Mong on Jan 20 was the recent epic ones.
Maybe others who follow this thread can also post recommendations after they see a good game. Just leave a note guys.
Btw looks like the big guns are back streaming but still no Major league today, instead Effort's still running his K League as usual. Today we have quite strong line-up:
K-LEAGUE, JAN 24 2023

SET 1 (PROLEAGUE) Effort <Polypoid> Mong Piano <Vermeer> Jaedong Sharp <Vermeer> Rain Stork <Polypoid> Motive + Show Spoiler [Game 5] +
Aside from Mini with 2 wins nobody won a game for Team 2. Royal with yet another kill-all. With this form he's bordering on Flash's level at the Proleague
Snow <Vermeer> Mini is a ridiculous game. 35 min PvP but no players ever cross 100 supply, and until the last seconds you couldn't tell who was gonna win.

If you want FP view, Snow and Mini both have youtube livestream.
Many good games today with the results very close, but then all were decided in two ZvZ matches. Queen edged it against Hero in the super ace. MVP Queen with 4W/2L
Very close matchday. 4-3 then 3-4 and super ace. How could Royal go 5W/1L but still be on the losing side? Because Soma also went 5/1 himself, but while he lost to Royal in Set 2, he got to play the super ace and beat Mini. Bad day for Mini and Stork who played 6 games between them and won none.
Snow beat Shuttle in the super ace, taking the MVP for himself (4W/1L). Meanwhile Shuttle continues to show he is a bit too weak for Major Proleague (0W/3L) despite being the host many times
* denotes players who only or mostly played K-League, so their results are not comparable with the players from Major Proleague.
For example, the 56.4% win rate of Jaedong doesn't indicate that he's better than Hero who is at 43.6% at the moment. Jaedong recently found the Major Proleague a bit too tough for him, so he dropped down to K-League to play with the likes of Sharp, Stork, Effort.
In top form are Royal Light and Snow who all won two third of their games, especially Royal who not just won but also played a ridiculous amount of games and had several all-kills. These are the ASL champion contenders.
Bisu Best and Mini are all hovering a little above 50% which is something they always do. Although Best maybe inflates his record a bit since he played a couple of K-Leagues.
The Zergs definitely need improvement as Soma is barely above 50% and Queen & Hero are at negative records. Soulkey were playing LOL more than BW at the beginning of the month, and has just recently come back to Proleagues, so we will see.
Rush needs some extra work to catch up with the two other Terran fellows, standing at only 44.7%.
Shuttle being Shuttle, punching a bit over his weight at the Major Proleague, and understandably at 42.9%.
Kind of surprised to see JYJ, who was the hot stuff a few seasons ago, now languishing at the bottom of the table at 37%, despite playing in the second tier league mostly.
Such a hectic night for BW in Korea. There are FOUR Proleagues running concurrently at the moment. I'll update this one as well since the lineup is pretty strong:

major proleague ridiculously high funding - 32100 star balloons per winner (very roughly $3,210) with another 10000 if anyone does an all-kill
of course this means my boy Sharp's tendency to choke hard is showing - this guy admits that he gets too excited and nervous in big spots
makes him frustrating to root for overall, but once in awhile he breaks out in entertaining ways on the big stage (e.g. KCM offline finals v Protoss, major proleague all-kill)
Wait...what? Think I saw 3만개 and just assumed it's the total for 4 players which seems reasonable. What was the occasion today that led to the big funding?

Soma's viewer gave 16000 per winner
well-known bigtime donor "52Bang" gave both Sharp and Rush 5300 per winner (and also put up the 10000 for all-kill)

Yea this guy is disappointment waiting to happen, I hope to be proven wrong but he just never seems to come up big when it really counts
It's a shame because when he's on top of his game, he can literally beat anyone but he can also lose pitifully to anyone also lmfao - gameplay level is like rolling dice (Shuttle has a similar reputation amongst Korean viewers)
I remember this fascinating discussion where Sharp was recounting how playing too excited and emotionally caused him to throw a lot of big games, and he said that Terran is not a race you can get away with doing that. Sharp said ideally a Terran should be like Last - very calm, collected, calculating, machine-like (like AlphaGo) - very interesting take.
Major Proleague today just hit an insane amount of prize pool. Almost 5000$ per winner. BO9 instead of the usual BO7. The stakes are unprecedentedly high. Which one will choke? Tune in to find out.
5v5 MAJOR PROLEAGUE, FEB 08 2023
[Team 1] Rush Royal Queen Jaedong Soma vs [Team 2] Snow Mini Best Sharp Hero
SET 1 (PROLEAGUE) Rush <Dark Origin> Snow Soma <76> Mini Royal <Retro> Hero Queen <Vermeer> Sharp Jaedong <Nemesis> Best + Show Spoiler [Game 6] +
Team 1 won 5-4 5-3 and took the huge prize. Funny that the stronger players (on paper) of both teams performed quite badly, with Royal (0W/2L), Soma (0W/2L), Snow (1W/2L) and Hero (1W/2L). Jaedong and Queen are joint MVP, each with 4W/1L.

sometimes I wonder how different his path would have been if he had a coach and a sports psychologist to sort out his bad habits and mentality issues

Edit: add ridiculously weak against mutalisks (but now I feel bad for him losing yet again)
Sharp was on Sonic's BBARAS team and the team was promised to be trained by a high level A team progamer and guess who shows up to train them? + Show Spoiler +
It's Larva, before he had made any significant accomplishments, an ex SKT B-teamer

SET 1 (PROLEAGUE) Shuttle <Vermeer> Soma Royal <Dark Origin> Mini (Ridiculous game) Hero <Neo Heartbreak Ridge> Mind Snow <Neo Sylphid> Best Rush <Retro> Jaedong + Show Spoiler [Game 6] +
After more than 5 hours, the Proleague finally ended with Rotal beating Soma in the super ace. The MVP Mini with 4W/1L unfortunately was in the losing team while Shuttle with 0W/3L was on the victory side.
Very back and forth today. One of the better Proleague recently. It's already 4am KST and they're still playing
It's cool to see Jaedong so active in these daily proleagues, despite not having the best results. I hope he's enjoying himself and not in pain trying to make an extra buck.
Nah if he's just trying to earn money he'd have done what Effort is doing. JD seems so determined to get good result this season after the disappointment of the last ASL, training quite hard recently and the results are picking up.
this proleague is for 50k balloons. meanwhile bisu and jd got left out so have just now decided to do a casual bo11 and it turns out they get sponsored 25k balloons in a 7:3 split. bisu and jd still got the pull
Lol and now Best and Rush are doing a BO13 for 14k balloons. This will probably become a trend soon. Crazy thinking about the crowdfunding power of Korean BW.
Team 1 lost 0-4 in the first set then went 0-3 down in the second, before Soma pulled a reverse sweep all-kill. Mini and Soma both performed excellently with 4W/1L yet the final result was not in their hand as Royal and Rush battled it out in the TvT super ace. Given that Royal has a win rate of 75% over Rush in 2023, the verdict was pretty much out once the random system called them out for the super ace.
Two Major Proleagues running at the same time today:
MAJOR PROLEAGUE, FEB 14 2023
[Team 1] Mini Shuttle JYJ Soulkey vs [Team 2] Best Mind Sharp Jaedong
SET 1 (PROLEAGUE) JYJ <Neo Heartbreak Ridge> Jaedong Mini <Dark Origin> Best Soulkey <Neo Sylphid> Mind Shuttle <Retro> Sharp + Show Spoiler [Game 5] +
Hero, a regular Major Proleague player, went 0-4 today in the K-League (literally lost to every single member of the opposite team) and also cost his team the super ace.
For the moment I update every major proleague and some of the k-league depending on the line-up (and of course on how much time I have), and also because they are available on youtube. For example there's also a J-League today with Bisu and JD, plus the likes of Sea and Calm... but none of them have youtube stream.
Of course there's no harm in updating other leagues. You can use the template I'm using. Putting it in an excel table makes it very quick to change the content.
Tie after 2 sets. Then luck wasn't on Team 2 side when they drawn Best to play against Mini in the super ace. ( Best who is 2-11 against Mini this year)
