Hey everyone,
I’m Testbug, a map creator from Peru. I’ve been making maps for a few years now, supporting tournaments like BSL and Latin American Cup. Today, I’m here to share my latest project with you and get your thoughts on a suitable name for it!
Initially, I wanted to call it "Nocturne of Shadow," inspired by the song from Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but I found it a bit too lengthy. So, it's time to choose a new name!
Here’s what the map looks like:
![[image loading]](https://i.ibb.co/6twhWSn/Nocturne-Of-Shadow.jpg)
After some thought, I’ve narrowed the potential names down to three choices:
(4)The Ring This name stems from the central ring-like structure on the map. It became a strategic point during test games, where players tended to maneuver around this ring rather than through the center, using the ring to approach the Basilica for its terrain advantage.
(4)Nocturne Shortening the original thought, "Nocturne" captures the twilight and mysterious atmosphere of the map. The term also refers to musical compositions that evoke the serene beauty of the night, mirroring the strategic depth and ambiance of this map.
(4)Mandala After attaching a photo of the map to ChatGPT4, the AI pointed out that the design resembled a mandala. It suggested the name 'Mandala,' emphasizing that it's surprising no maps have been named such despite the design's strong symbolic suitability for strategic gameplay.
Poll: Which name suits my new map best? You must be logged in to vote in this poll. ☐ (4)The Ring - Central strategy point, ring-like structure ☐ (4)Nocturne - Inspired by Zelda, evokes twilight mystery ☐ (4)Mandala - Symmetrical design, unique name
Please help me choose by voting for your favorite: (4)The Ring, (4)Nocturne, or (4)Mandala. Your feedback is very valuable and will help finalize the name that best suits this map.
Thanks for your involvement and for helping make this community a fantastic place for players and mappers alike.

It would be the perfect name if the landscape was desert!

Reminds me a bit of spellbinding circle: ![[image loading]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71fiSsSsOtL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg)
So Spellbinder could be a potential name for it.

Ah yes, I definitely need to make a map with that pattern (and name)!! but I think Sand Terrain would suit it best! (just as Poly_Optimize suggested!)

I am going for Mandala yah 😎
It is a great pick by the AI

(4) Celtic Cross

"Celtic Cross" captures the essence of the map better than "The Ring"!

Mandala has a harmonic and soothing sound to it and gets my vote.
It's interesting how the symmetry works in this map. The mains are rotationally symmetrical, but the central parts additionally also have full x- and y-symmetry.

Any data on the map to look at? Seems hard for T to gain a 3rd base.

You can still go with Zelda or Ocarina
I think Drone or Quadcopter works too.
Like the other suggestions too.
Minus vote on Mandala

Counter-clockwise it does seem a bit difficult though. TvP/T means they have to spread their tankline out across a huge area. TvZ means likely lots of ling attacks on the exposed 3rd.

Hii FlaShFTW, thanks for your message! I'd like to understand your comment better. I thought that if Terran spawns in a counter-clockwise position to their opponent, they could play like on Eclipse: Expand at the short entrance multi (leaving the path to the other side open, thus leaving their natural a bit vulnerable), and then expand to the wide entrance multi (as is customary on Eclipse). The big difference would be that it would take the enemy much longer to reach the Terran 3rd and 4th bases, but the defending Terran players could move quickly from their natural

Eclipse was a tough map for ZvT, and completely impossible for Utrallisk based builds. I wanted to create an Ultralisk-friendly version of Eclipse.

Eclipse was a tough map for ZvT, and completely impossible for Utrallisk based builds. I wanted to create an Ultralisk-friendly version of Eclipse. So my example was saying if T spawned 11 and opponent P/T spawned 1. Expanding to 10 in this position for 3rd may be a bit tricky, but I think as long as you give them enough space to build turrets/depots that it should be fine. If they can secure the 3rd and have a solid base, then expanding further shouldn't be an issue.
For TvZ, using same spawns, I think it will be difficult but Terran can always pin back Zerg and look to also expand to 12 if they can secure outside of Z natural as an example.
Btw, I don't mean to say that something being difficult/hard = bad map. Some races will inherently have weaknesses on a map and that's ok.

In the other hand, using same spawns. If zerg spawned 11, and terran spawned 1, zerg can abuse the cliff, and hit terran buildings and marines with invisible mutas

Thank you all so much for your votes!
It seems that "Nocturne" without "of shadow" is the most preferred name among all the options!
I'd just like to know if you genuinely prefer the name 'Nocturne' over 'Nocturne of Shadow,' or if you just chose 'Nocturne' because it closely resembles 'Nocturne of Shadow' from Zelda.
I also want to add that from all the suggestions in this thread, I believe 'Celtic Cross' best represents the essence of my map:

In fact, I prefer 'Celtic Cross' over 'Nocturne' or 'Nocturne of Shadow'! What do you guys think about this name?
|
Hmm.. yeah.. "Celtic Cross" sounds great, too. And makes the most sense, considering the map layout, imo.
|
I think Celtic Cross is the best name so far. That or Turtle.
