The regrowth of our unkillable game can continue if this get's up and running. It being worked on can keep people from leaving and giving up. This cancels my plans on being a full time turd on twitter. I think it's for the best to let actiblizz think they killed the game or left it at an "okay" state. Questions: Would anything need to be done/reverted from Activision blizzard for shieldbattery to work? Should we be turds on twitter or let them think they killed their unprofitable game? We don't need Blizzard to do anything/remove anything for us to continue, and generally we aren't affected *that* much by the things they do. The ideal for us is that they don't release patches very often, but our main reverser wrote some quite nice software that means game updates usually either work without any changes on our part, or with some very minimal effort. We're in a much better spot as far as that goes than we were with the release of 1.17 (back when we expected that Blizzard would never touch the game again ). We'd obviously love to see them go down the C&C Remastered route of actually releasing the game source, but I don't really consider that in the realm of possibility. Do u know where exactly they stand on third party programs? They will probably never make an official statement on this and I don't really like to speculate, but we can look at their direct support of things like SCMDraft and previous promotion of Fish and ICCup for some examples. Is money needed for keeping servers up? We're not extremely strapped for cash at this point, but I would like to see development on this become a sustainable thing that I/others can invest a lot of time into. Future donations would go towards server costs, supporting developers, and funding tournaments and events on ShieldBattery. More immediately, donations would let us spin up more global coverage for our game servers (which is already decent, but there are definitely some areas of the world that are underserved). BUT I still need to take care of some of the legal aspects of that, so stay tuned! Do you need more people helping out on it? Any specific areas in that case? We do most of our work in the open: https://github.com/ShieldBattery/ShieldBattery Most pressing need is probably around graphic design stuff, but if people are interested in contributing in some way, feel free to talk to 2Pacalypse- or me and we can figure it out. (i am afraid to think this could not be a positive thing than ) Splitting the playerbase is unfortunately a risk with any sort of effort like this, but I'm not extremely worried about it because we're not really taking anything away. Unlike Blizzard launching SC:R or WC:R, the original service will still be there. ShieldBattery doesn't modify your client in any way, and you're free to keep using battle.net even if you have ShieldBattery installed/running. Hell, if your computer can handle 2 copies of SC:R running, you could even queue up for their matchmaking while you queue up for ours. At the end of the day, I think it's really important for the BW community's longevity that we build something we can keep adding to and that really advances the game. We don't just want to add a few niceties and then preserve everything in amber, hoping that players leave at a slow enough rate that the game stays alive. We want to build something that is attractive to both old and new players, we want to add features that keep competitive play fresh without betraying Brood War's legacy. There's so many cool things that we've dreamed up and will do, it's just unfortunate that we have to back up out of the dead end that is Blizzard's service in order to get there.

I have wondered for a while now, without anyone to ask this; could private small servers be set up for tournaments on the fly? If so, what would the minimum specs be of a computer that could handle 2--5 people, players+ casters? If this idea is stupid or fundamentally unsound, you can just say that, not trying to brain drain ya.

While this is definitely more possible than it was in the past (our server stuff is now reasonably easy to deploy provided you have a basic understanding of it), the game hosting itself would probably be a bit harder. We use multiple servers to forward traffic between players, and things really only work well if you have servers in good locations for all the players. As such, it's not really as simple as running a single server on your local machine, so I'm not sure our stuff would be a great match for that use case currently.

I have two old media server racks with intel dual core 2's, if they were placed in the right location, would that contribute to a larger network, or does scr require more modern equipment?

The hardware is a bit less important to us (at least for the network forwarding stuff, it's not particularly intensive), but network location is of prime importance. As such, all of our servers are current run through cloud hosting services that makes them easier to spin up/down as needed and likely have decent routes to the places around them, rather than any kind of dedicated hardware. The match-making clock always says 17-24 seconds now compared to 46-76 seconds. I pair and fail on average 3-4 times before getting a match. I know the match is solid, if the model of their race appears. If it is blank, I'm back in limbo. In the end, I am able to play at about the same rate as before, but getting paired to play every few seconds and then it failing is frustrating. For some reason my tr with koreans is tr20 more often then before. I do not know enough to know if it is related.

Well, they still have not responded to any of the threads on their own forums on their own website, so I don't know how much good this will do, unless a big personality like Artosis keeps pushing them forward.

Noise = customers who care. Customers who care who are upset = not good for publicity/business. The forums aren't really public, social media is a good tool here.

The fact that he has to "puhs internally" to get a broken ladder working is so sad. Yeah, I've been saying this from the start. Blame Activision Blizzard, not the people. On RM they've been a skeleton crew since release. It's important that we rage at their situation as much as ours.
