Hey y'all i have a question. Why is the US divided into two separate regions? I could be missing something major on the server side, but it seems like there isnt might much of a particular reason to split the server up. I actually like the regional aspect of it, provided there is enough players around. I know on US east if your not on peak time it can take while to get a game. It seems like they should be merged there are enough players to warrant it. This has a large hurt on custom games also.

Grant Davies, a developer on the SC:R team responded with this:

Why not merge gateways (specifically USE, USW)? This was another thing we considered right at the start of designing out the integration with modern Battle.net. Here are a couple of things to consider immediately:

1. What if my name is on USE but not USW? What if someone else has my name on USW? The obvious answer is to internally prefix/suffix my name, but remember, whatever the final name is needs to fit within the restrictions of names in the old chat server. So if my name has already used the maximum bytes available, what then? And yes, we could rewrite or augment the chat server to remove such old restrictions, but that is quite the undertaking and it also hits on point #2 below. Another option would be to force me to rename my profile on next login, but that's not a great user experience (who gets to keep their name, and who has to rename?).

2. It's easy to forget that the original chat server is shared between 4 other games. Whatever solution we come up would very likely require every game to be patched. A couple of those we've patched in the last couple of years, so it's not unreasonable that we could patch them, but there are other cases where we really haven't looked at the source code in a very long time. Even getting to the point of releasing any kind of patch on each of those is a serious time investment with substantial risk.

TLDR - although we agreed there were compelling reasons to merge USE & USW, the additional risk and time investment was pushing us well above what was already a very complicated and intricate subproject. So we decided to table the idea and circle back to it when we felt we could tackle it.

facepalm, the reason is nicknames?.... fuu***

But I admit, I don't quite understand reason #2.

As for reason #1, I mean... you don't have to say you're merging servers. Just say you're shutting down the server with less users to unify the scene, and then it's obvious who keeps their name.

hmmmm... I don't like trivial things like this stopping progress.

They should really merge them imo. Or seperate North and South america instead... (sorry peruvians but your lag is horrible :\ )

ah are you guys new to b.net? it would ruin all game accounts across multiple games. even tho alot of those games are not popular if you put them all together its still alot of people

Since the player connections are P2P and not to a server, shouldn't it be possible to allow USE and USW players to be in the same game, and where there is a conflict in account names, simply label each? For example, your USW NAME will show normally in most games, but if the USE NAME shows up in your game, it simply labels you as NAME (USW) and them as NAME (USE) for the duration of the game?

Is there an official online player count for each server? How much more populated is one than the other?

Players from the two servers currently play in the same games through matchmaking.

The reason there are two servers is a left over from the early days of online gaming. When players were on 56k modems it wasn't really possible to play from one side of the continent to the other without alot of latency issues, hence choosing between east and west. Now that isn't a problem but as stated above they haven't taken the time to come up with a solution/merge the servers as they are used by 4 games which are still active, plus the names etc.
