Korean article cites an unnamed telecom (KT/SKT) source that suggests they're not particularly interested in reforming Brood War teams. The quote goes "I can't give a definitive answer on the telecom companies reforming StarCraft 1 teams, but I think it's right to look at the current situation of StarCraft: Remastered tournaments being held around streaming companies as the most appropriate [direction for the industry]."

Unsurprising. Streaming for the top players is far more lucrative than winning tournaments. Sure teams would help amateur and lower-tier players but if the top stars have no interest in participating then the whole thing becomes relatively pointless.

LoL and OW are the games these gamers want to become good at, that's just how it is.

The pc bang ratings basically didn't increase at all (in comparison to the popular games it's just way down) LoL and OW are the games these gamers want to become good at, that's just how it is. This is the same bullshit logic as people complaining that SC2 is dead because it only has 100k active accounts and not 10 million like League... Last I checked BW is still top 10 in PC Bang rankings (and never dropped below that, ever), Afreeca streamers still doing fine, big tournaments still getting good views and paying alright money. I will never understand this bottomless greed and obsession with needing to have millions of everything in order to be relevant, millions of players, millions of viewers, millions of dollars every tournament etc. Especially in a niche genre like RTS where most of its financial success and mindshare in popular consciousness came from casuals who never knew about the competitive side and literally begrudge BW for supposedly killing the genre with its APM spam and ridiculous micro tricks, it's not a real strategy game etc. etc.

I didn't even talk negatively about the current situation even though i am a bit disappointed that the impact in korea seems to be rather small. Way to overreact.

"the impact in Korea seems to be rather small" Yes because most everyone who was still interested in BW was still already playing/watching/following BW, most likely. Remastered is just a jump ship situation from one version to the other. That's why it "seems rather small" to you. It wasn't dead to need reviving.

Games like PUBG Overwatch LoL, as Horangnabi put it, they treat like facebook. Go home from a long day of work. Eat dinner. Turn on the computer. Play with friends. "How are you guys? Me I'm doing great but at work my boss wa- Hey guys they're pushing Middle! Anyways my boss was... I think there are definitely more accessibility for players who want to play something challenging and stand alone, but humans are social creatures. BW fulfilled that need, but it is no longer 2000!

I simply stated facts, i am sorry if that offends you so much. The point was that teams don't show the desire to create bw ones. I think it's because there is no real influx of new players as seen by the pc bang stats in comparison to before and in comparison to the more popular games. That's all i said/implied. Is the current situation good? Yes i think having ASL/SSL and potentially even OSL (rumors) is amazing! I love watching JD stream on afreeca. But that wasn't the point of Wax's post.

No, I am not offended. I think your subjective opinion which you injected as an attempted conclusion to those facts, is misguided, misleading and betrays your ignorance of the Korean scene, if you assumed BW would somehow explode to like 20% on the PC bang chart and 4% is "rather small" or disappointing or whatever you said. Yes, big sponsors don't want to create teams anymore, whether that's good or bad only time will tell; personally I enjoy the current environment and the way it benefits ex-pros, as long as they can make a reasonable living and have tournaments to play in then I'm happy with it. Maybe there will be a more informal team league at some point with player-created makeshift teams or something, that could be cool to watch.

![]() With that being said, we will see how many players will try to qualify for ASL, iirc for the last ones there were hundreds. I am also excited for the possibility of a new OSL and what that might do for the korean scene. We will see ![]()

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/brood-war/514457-can-we-expect-full-broodwar-revival?page=2#36 but from what I could gather, there hasnt been a time in the last 10 years where like, BW was ever at 20% on gametrics' stats. thats kinda important i think. Ultimately what CHEONSOYUN said is universal, people like to play games with lots of teamwork as a means of socialization.

This is roughly what I remembered as well, although I was unsure how true it actually was. Thank you for taking the time to gather some data and post it, even if it might not be the most rigorous or thorough.

What's unquestionable is BW is by far the largest ESPORT its age even larger than everything for years after. It's also one of the first. I'd love for ESPORTS to be large enough that the situation I discussed above came true, but for now for any BW player there's more than enough content to fill any finite period of time.
