Hey guys - so I live in a rural village in South Africa and I don't have an active internet connection. I also don't have a very good laptop which led me to download BW since I've enjoyed playing it in the past.
My issue is that playing 1v X-number of computers in standard games has gotten boring. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make offline mode fun? I tried installing some UMS maps but the offline AI doesn't seem to cooperate with those maps. Any ideas?
Thanks!
PS- I've tried making maps with interesting features in the default Campaign Editor but then I open the map in the game with UMS option and the computers don't move or do anything and I don't know how to get them to play..
UMS maps should work fine offline. Simply use the "Use map settings" mode (maybe use multi-player -> UDP). There are great defense maps, bounds, and a million other map styles. Note though, that some may require additional players (some maps automatically end if you play them alone, and you would need to unprotect the map and change the triggers in a map editor to change that behaviour).

Thanks for all the input guys - I did just realize the AI script trigger has to be active for UMS to work offline. It seems though that everything has to be AI-scripted. Is there a preloaded set of triggers I can DL to make the computer just do the normal things? (I.e. Gather, build and attack others)?

Yes. Not sure if the standard SC Editor contains these triggers, but editors like SCMDraft2, StarForge or the Special Editor all contain special AI triggers that you can enable. Simply set the location to Anywhere. I'm not sure how good these AIs are, though.

its just one trigger for a computer player i think

no mouse no keyboard ? touchpad ? or do u use some of that bwapi bots ? thay can play campaign too.
I have SCMDraft but when I try loading it it keeps saying "Failed loading MPQ" ..."Brood War add on not detected." ..."loading game data failed!"
I also tried DL'ing Scxe, ProEdit4.0 and redownloaded SCM Draft2 but every program is giving me startup errors, basically saying a SC file is missing or it can't detect Brood War. My SC directory is in c/program files/starcraft but I run the game off an ISO so I'm not really sure how (or where) to install the map editors

I play mostly offline and what I tend to go for: FFA with any number of AI, including maps like BGH and Fastest, various UMS like Turret Defense or Special Forces for example.
Tuth and Darknet, could you guys possibly upload a few maps for me? That in fact would be great cause I can't install these large map packs that I find online but anything less than 50mb would be perfect! I would love to have an offline turret defense map and other cool / essential ones(!)

Running any of the campaign or melee AI scripts will do all these things (with various degrees of cheating, difficulty, unit compositions and pre-requirements of pre-placed buildings). You should definitely get SCMDraft, as it not only gives you much better map-editing tools but also access to all the standard AI-scripts. There are even tools available to write and import your own AI scripts.

Registry problem maybe? Have you tried reinstalling StarCraft? You could also try just copying the MPQ files from your StarCraft folder into the SCMDraft folder. Lastly, there is the option to manually set the paths for StarCraft and the MPQ files in SCMDraft via Options/profile Settings…. Default settings should look something like %SCPATH%stardat.mpq etc.

Too easy. winning against 4+ AIs gets a bit harder though, as AI behaviour is much more aggressive when there are more (i.e. they will actually all attack you pretty early and you can usually not FE against that). Coming up with silly strategies like winning with just Lurkers (okay, this is just lame against the artificial stupid without detection), 4 fact Vulture (actually very effective to a point!) or mass ghosts (works rather well with good lockdowns, but will take long to actually eliminate the AIs).
Try winning UMS which are laid out for multiple people by using cheats. Sounds kinda lame, but it is actually fun (unless you just use Power overwhelming). F.e. S.A.T Defense is kinda fun playing alone with some cheats (try not to make yourself invincible, but to have a chance).
I have already spent hours doing that and I did not even notice the time passing by. So you should at least try it

You can play vs the custom Brood War AIs from that link just fine offline. It is even possible to play vs them on only 1 computer.
Here is a video that shows you how to do it:
I sometimes use my old desktop that isn't connected to the internet to run these bots, and I managed to install it using a usb to transfer the files needed.
There are lot of long singleplayer campaigns to play. I'd recommend the Antioch Chronicles series and Fall of the Gods which are the ones I had the most fun out of the 15+ campaigns I have played.
You can also try this Total Conversion mod called ''Antithesis Rising''. It has 3 different AI's based on difficult but 2 races which you can play against and are more challenging than vanilla sc bots.
I will upload some maps in the evening. In the meantime, here's a nice site with maps that I've been using in the past, it has all of them divided into categories with short descriptions etc.: http://sc.nibbits.com/maps/
