kicking someone because they pick a color you don't want them to pick is a way to make it harder to start your team game, not a good option imo. people aren't even going to have the same color preferences or rules.. i pick black.. starting team games can be a little hard at times..
I have nothing against black though i'd have to look at minimap again maybe change the way it is displayed on minimap somehow?? but with or without black just making similar colors non pickable together in the same game should be a good fix

edit: just checked black is finely visible in HD i think and barely visible on SD on the minimap, because a difference between HD and SD is that in HD there is a actual black line around units and buildings on the minimap that isn't on SD, and the black color is actually dark grey and fades a lot on the minimap colors on SD.

The right way to implement the new colours would have been to allow map makers to restrict colours on a map, based on similarity and tileset. But Blizzard did not bother, as always.

So if you can manage it, just keep the extended colours, even full RGB custom colours, but leave it to map makers to define a palette of eight (or maybe a bit more, but just setting them as the player colours, like in 1.16 BW seems to be the easiest, most intuitive solution) reasonable colours depending on tileset/deco theme of a map. It might even be possible to include some default settings for each tileset in ScmDraft.

Reverting just to the original 12 colours is not optimal either, because even of those some where just bad (brown being very dark and an effective camouflage to at least some degree on virtually any tileset being the worst offende3r). But changing the palette always led to some kind of crashing colours. Either its gree/teal, blue/dark aqua("critter colour") or white/yellow/pale yellow/tan that would be hard to distinguish. So being able to define some additional options, like blue-grey, darkish grey, pink or cyan (not the one that looks like minerals on the minimap!), for example, would be great.

We'd like to add more features to maps, so this seems like something that could be a reasonable addition to me. I definitely don't think we want to fully revert the new colors, but we want to be more thoughtful about how all this gets applied. I'd like to build a system that ensures team colors have enough contrast against each other, against the map (on minimap and on the actual game screen), allow for effective communication in team games, and allows for personal (client-side) customization for users that have unique needs or desires (e.g. a color-blind mode). If we do allow mapmakers to pick, ideally we could provide some hints/warnings if they pick things that we think don't fit that system so that it's not on every mapmaker to discover this individually.

Meaning let players choose whatever color they want, and let them see those colors on their computers, but if it bothers me, it would be nice if the standard colors were used and displayed locally, only for me. Win-win situation, and I guess it's easy to implement this.

Damn, you're right, I forgot about it.

Then maybe if all members of a team opt in to "revert to standard colors", then standard colors would be used / displayed for all team members. So colors would be consistent in the team. But again, only in the team... Else colors would not be changed. But this is getting complicated...

have to say this is a non issue. they could simply switch to 'attack 12' or 'attack 3'. very easily. SC2 does the same and this has never been a problem ( color customization).

Anyway, none of this fixes the fact that some colors are practically invisible or indistinguishable on the minimap. Can't "simply" say "12 is out" when 12 and 11 are White and Off-White, or when the color of the Zerglings blends in with the creep so you don't even see them leave.

Visual clarity is more important than aesthetics.

Umm no, you can say 12 or 11, and you can also ping in both games. It would be so extremely rare that visual clarity would ever be a problem that can't be overcome with the tools the game gives you that it should definitely not be considered when making color choices for shield battery.

Umm no, you can say 12 or 11, and you can also ping in both games. It would be so extremely rare that visual clarity would ever be a problem that can't be overcome with the tools the game gives you that it should definitely not be considered when making color choices for shield battery.

Literally talking about my experience playing with the new colors on BGH in SD. That's why in West you can find people hosting maps and specifically putting "Good colors" in the title. You won't gaslight me on this.

2. I just realized that using TL search function, neither "shield" nor "battery" return this or associated threads as a top result; that is because it does not parse "shieldbattery". Asking TL to change their parsing algorithm will probably be easier than rebranding as Shield Battery (with a space), but idk. Just wanted to make it known.
