We have all heard the heroic tale of the blind SC player who gave Boxer (even if he was blind for the first few minutes) a legitimate run for his money. But, have you ever wondered just how hard it'd actually be to do?
...How about how fun?
My brothers, a friend of mine, and myself got together over the course of a few nights for one of the funnest experiences of my SC gaming life. No visuals. Relying completely on sound and randomly shouted expletives, we attacked each other, attacked ourselves, attacked thin air...That is, of course, if we could find our units. XD
Retarded? A little. Slow paced? Possibly. But, I restate: With my friends and a thoroughly exercised freedom of speech, I had some of the most fun ever, mostly in the watching of replays after matches were had.
I encourage everyone to try it once, and, of course, commentate upon your own play. O, and shout things that make no sense. That's a must.
Here is a pack of five games we had over those nights: http://download.yousendit.com/FA8D7242365755E4
(If you're going to watch any of them, watch 4-Day When Buildings Float)
It's obvious who I am and yes, I was being extremely retarded on purpose. Things are much more fun that way!
Thanks for reading. If you don't like the idea, eh. Just wanted to share and possibly get some others to experiment a little with the best game ever made.

Well written and really funny. Art post.

I'm happy I've gotten positive replies thus far.
Thank you for the compliment, Testie; you'd find, sadly (or maybe not), that my literacy did not transfer over to my games, though. ^_^

I might give it a try, but Id probably start small, like with Blood Bath.

That's the map we played for all of our games. :p
Believe me, we had a really hard time navigating ourselves around even such a simple place as that. Hell, we had a hard time finding out which corner our base was even in sometimes. >_<
|
I have no idea how you'd manage to mine. Units make sounds when you select them so you can figure out where they are. How are you supposed to locate your gas and minerals?
|
It's easy in theory and with some luckily placed misclicks. Find your workers and hotkey them. Then click around 'til you hit a patch, while hoping like hell that you aren't accidentally scrolling away from your main. Freeze your mouse there, select your hotkey, and right-click them to what you've selected. Hopefully you'll hear the sweet sound of light blue profit coming home. :p
Gas is a much more complicated issue, and is one boundary we haven't pushed. I mean, we've barely pushed the "half-assed noob" boundary here. Gas units (and almost any non-peon unit, really) are out of range for the moment. XD

This sounds a little too frustrating for me. I prefer to play SC while blind drunk. I can still technically see, I'm just uncertain of whether or not my eyes/brain are lying to me.
Me and my two room-mates down a bottle of Jim Beam Black Label and then play 3 man FFA's on super old school maps. This is about the only SC I play these days, I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing .

i played 2 games i couldnt get my units to mine

what if you play a UMS
where the whole map is permamently fog of war?

Someone posted a guide on this some time last year.
I think this is what it said on mining (and on game play):
Don't move your mouse! If you do, you are a dead man. Use your arrow keys to scroll around and keep on left clicking. If you hear the sound that the mineral makes, stop and hotkey the location. Control+select the workers and mine the minerals by using the location hotkey.
Here are some ideas I just thought of.
How to find where you are on blood bath:
Choose one random intermediate direction to spam on your keyboard (up left, up right, down left, down right.) Keep on holding it down. If you can hear your workers mining, you are in that region of the map.
How to 5 pool:
Build one worker. Wait for a few seconds. Select a worker (preferably hotkey the one that you build) and then spam pool until it builds. Wait until it finishes. Morph three larvae into zergling, and attack a corner where you are not. Attack another corner if you do not find them first. (Just key scroll to that corner, and hit the hotkeys for lings _once_. When they get close by, you will be able to hear the sound they make.

pft i'd beat anyone in blind craft t.t

if we had any means to prove players dont cheat, i would pay money to play such a game over battle net :D
nice idea, have to try it out the next time me and my buddy decide to play SC lans piss drunk

This would be the easiest way. Select your town hall structure and listen for its sound, and hotkey it. Then move directly to the left a bit and drag down-right until you select all your peons. Hotkey them. Press your town hall hotkey twice. Go slowly in all of the eight directions, left-clicking as you go. When you hear the selection sound, you've found a mineral patch. Don't move the mouse, and select your peon hotkey and right-click the mineral patch. If you found a geyser instead, you'll hear a "can't do that" sound, and have to search some more for the minerals. When your peon is completed, hotkey it to a different key and have him become your main builder for everything. Now, scouting and attacking are a completely different obstacle and I don't have a good suggestion for that, but for opening-game economics this system should work just fine.

What? No, "town hall" and "peon" are the neutral terms for CC/Nexus/Hatchery and SCV/Probe/Drone respectively, because typing all that is irritating.

Even a blind player has to scout. Attack-move a peon somewhere, when you get the "Your forces are under attack" notice, center on that unit by double-pressing the hotkey and Shift-F2 the map location so you know where the enemy base is. That's when you can start sending out your army.
EDIT: Here's a dilemma though. How would you know, especially if you're playing a same-race matchup, if you're outnumbered? Seems like that would be mostly luck.

Just 5 pool every game and pray that you'll win.

I just played a 4ffa of this and got raped by SCV rush. I'm waiting for the rest to finish. It's a lot more disorienting than I thought it would be. I kept moving my mouse out of the game screen and down into the panel. Everyone got mining pretty quickly, it took me (the last person) about 2 minutes to get started.
I think random should definitely be a rule because Terran SCV rush is far too strong. I was so scared to pull Probe off to defend myself because Id never get them back mining.

I used to say those warcraft terms too but people didn't understand me so I switched to "Main Base" and "Worker"

In one of our games, one of us accidentally left the game (the Why Does Zealot Not Go one) through the menu. XD

To get gas: Hotkey 2 peons in different hotkeys. Spamthe hotkeys for building an extractor with one of the workers around the place and wait till you get it confirmed (ie no error sound), freeze mouse on that spot. When its done get your other hotkeyed worker and tell him to mine gas. Voila!

i remember boxer was blinded for like 4 minutes and then he let the real blind kid just doing nothing, and boxer eventually won. that was kinda mean

I was laughing and kind of wincing at the same time when he quietly walked his rines into the guys mineral line, killed the drones, and then ran back out. : x

It might be interesting to try to make a map that can be played blind. All resources would be in the same location relative to the start locations, and there could be someway to more easily determine one's location on the map. Perhaps specifically placed neutral buildings or something which produces a sound so one can figure out where their base is on the map without a lot of effort; that might make it a little less fun though?

What I want to know, is why the fuck they were typing when they knew none of them could see the monitor?

iNc and Chill are correct. :p
Fun little note: It wasn't until my friend joined in that we thought to turn off the monitors. Until then, we just played with blankets and towels wrapped around our entire heads.
Speaks for our intelligence, eh?

That'd be funny as hell at a LAN .

I know this is kind of an old post.. but if anyone is interested in making this mainstream I know I could make this a possibility.. even make it so if you get stuck you could do a little "ask for help" thing.
Like stated before you could just cloak the whole map in FOW and then make it hotkey your units that you want.
( I was Prophezeiung )
Let me know what you think
(And as a sidenote, I could also make it anti-map hack to make it fair)
