Sponsorship, Blizzard's PR support & more detailstop Update: New sponsor secured~! more here: SSL9 - Sponsor Has Arrived
This is interesting: Blizzard will help by promoting SSL9 through their official homepage and SNS. "~SSL9 afreeca broadcasts will reach the entire world and are also a hot issue in the world's most famous foreign community TeamLiquid.^^"
Commentary for SSL9: Kim Carry + Lee Seung Won (doesn't actually state Sonic as a commentator, but I doubt he wouldn't)
SSL8 Finals - Kim Carry, Sonic & Lee Seung Won, photo by Kimbilly
Other details: Some kind of HD support for SSL9 will be provided by Afreeca. Ro32 onwards will be offline, free admissions for viewers in the studio. There will be 2 "interview girls" at the offline, Sonic's version of stargirls. A lot else will be different from SSL8 (like these item giveaways at the studio).
Final message: "StarCraft: Brood War is still a loved game. As the famous foreign baseball player Yogi Berra said "The game isn't over until it's over." - in that spirit, the StarCraft transmision did not stop although it was only through online means. I believe the transmition can continue until the very end.
I think Brood War's competition and popularity will be alive after 10 years as well. The tradition of Korean Brood War can still stand strong. I will do my best to make it happen. [Sonic refers to BW as similar to Baduk/Go, a board game that is very famous in Korea.]
We look forward to seeing you all at the offline group selection ceremony. Please cheer on us heartily and come visit the studio. Thank you."
You probably heard the news already - Sonic makes another huge step forward, opening a studio to let the fans get close with their favorites again (and with each other! let's not forget that). Now he finally gives us a sneak peek inside!
Note: Group order may change to accommodate players' schedules.
2/08 Ro16 Group A - 2/13 Ro16 Group B 2/15 Ro16 Group C - 2/20 Ro16 Group D
Round of 87 2/22 Ro8 Groups A, B - 2/27 Ro8 Groups C, D
Round of 4 3/6 Ro4 Groups A, B
Grand Final + 3rd/4th Place Match 3/15 Saturday 6PM KST - location TBD - 2100~3500 seats
Live casts from SonicTV Studio at 7PM KST Thursday/Saturday. That's 2 hours earlier than the currently ongoing Sonic ProLeague casts. Player FPVs will probably only be available on 50 inch screens at the studio.
2 New maps by Earthattack Wind and Cloud & Pamir Plateau from the creator of the notorious Fighting Spirit, 변종석 (Byeon Jong-Seok, Rose.of.Dream.), will no longer be used in SSL9. Instead, 2 new maps were created by 김응서 (Kim Eung-Seo, Earthattack), the creator of maps like Blue Storm, Circuit Breaker, Outsider, Destination or Match Point, some of which are used in the ongoing SPL. The new maps are designed to specifically fit the concept of the 9th Sonic StarLeague! Fuck monkeys!
No other details regarding the format that I'm aware of, but take a look at previous SSLs for an idea.
PrizepoolFINALtop 1st place: $5650 + $1880 store gift certificate = $7530 total 2nd place: $2820 + $940 store gift certificate = $3760 total 3rd place: $940 + $940 store gift certificate = $1880 total I assume the store gift certificates are for HW products?
Additionally, players are also getting bonus prizes for advancing into next rounds and games won, these were upgraded as well: Ro16 advancement: $50 → $100 Ro8 advancement: $100 → $200 (+ seed) 3rd/4th Place Match: $50 → $100 (for each game won) Finals: $100 → $150 (for each game won)
(8th SSL was $4.600, $2.760, $1.840, $920)
Stargirlstop Two "interview girls" will replace stargirls. But we'll call them stargirls anyway so suck it.
Stargirl #1: 천보영/Cheon Bo-Yeong, racing car model who is very good with the mic according to Sonic. As a BJ expert, he should know well enough.
I'll go ahead and save you the trouble: 천보영 imgur album (No NSFW although I've yet to find an employer who's okay with me browsing semi-naked chicks at work.)
Stargirl #2: 앤화이트의 하경/N-White's Ha-Kyeong. We all know N-White from previous (7th and 8th) SSL Finals.

Because he was on a long hiatus and it wasn't clear if he'd be playing or join the military. He made his debut today in SPL but this is perhaps a good sign that he's not back to just play a few games.

Kim carrier for ro16 onwards? Or lee seung won (iirc that's his name)?
Hopefully both. I was thinking with the larger studio that we'll be able to get a 3-man cast for the majority of the tournament.
Aren't TheMarine + GoRush coming to casting this too?
So Kim Carrier + Lee Seung Won + TheMarine + GoRush lineup?
Now hopefully the studio explodes so that Sonic can start charging up for those tickets or at least make it big so that news coverage will send the message to Kespa, OGN. I know for a fact that BW's presence is probably hindered by the fact that it is no longer on TV. People are still willing to tune it in Korea.

I'm not aware of any commentators being announced for this specifically, but it's pretty much inevitable some of these guys would join, maybe even regularly. I'm sure it'll be specified later based on their schedule. TheMarine & GoRush are announced for some 'official Sonic ProLeague in january', but there's no info on that yet so don't get your hopes up too high.

No it doesn't at all rofl. It doesn't make any sense.
The main lineup is great, but I think other amateur players ought to have a shot at getting a couple spots. Seems like you're making the scene a bit closed if you don't
First of all, great lineup, great tournament! Second, it is great that FengZi was invited. Chinese have great fans and deserve a representative. Sonic going international, baby!
Oo, nice to see FengZi get invited. I'm glad BW is still going strong in Korea and China <3 Gonna be awesome! It would be cool to see stargirls play chess, too haha
You know, I would not be totally surprised if OGN turned out to be the hidden sponsor, even though it would be kind of weird considering they are a broadcasting company, too.
On December 10 2013 04:25 hp.Shell wrote: I'd be happier seeing GomTV as the sponsor, then we could have Tastosis back in the booth!
I want to convince you that this is better! This means BW is sustainable on it's own, and it doesn't need the help of the creator to help it run (GOMTV is largely funded by Blizzard)..

what sonic should do is receate the ODT format since he already has rankings through the SRTs so he knows how to seed players.

Is it not that the point of the other sospa events? 1 month wait, I really hope a Zero vs JangBi finals
Huh. Interesting. Maybe Koreans minstranslate it and it was supposed to be Pride of War or maybe someone decided it's more cool. Regardless, SSL might have slightly updated slogans

That would make SSL sort of MSL o_O I think if that would happen, Jaedong should instantly drop SC2, pack his gear and his ass to Soeul to get golden badge(??).
Since the prize is so big, it makes sense to spread it out. Players will be motivated to practice special strats when they know they'll be playing in a studio that legit for that many bucks
If Sonic can bring back professional BW, this game really is immortal He can't do it by himself though. The players need to get smart and start getting organized / living together. If everyone is just thinking 'well I'll do this until I have to go to the military and then figure out a new life,' the next year or two may really be the send off for this game. I hope we'll see players supporting each other and forming real groups that can become real teams in the future. The FFA going on with everyone trying to make their way by themselves off balloons from Afreeca can't last forever. New players will have too much difficulty entering a scene like that / won't have much to aspire to. Sonic is moving up and up, the players need to follow suit.
glgl! Whatever happens, it's amazing that this exists at all ^^

Agreed. A scene is only healthy with new blood coming in continually. A whole system of lower-level tournaments and bringing up up-and-coming players needs to be developed over the next few years.

Killer is 5-1 vs Jangbi since Jangbi came back.
Yeah, that's the reason I'm kind of hoping for it, but definitely not expecting it. I feel like the finals are far more likely to be between some combination of Killer, by.hero, Sea, or Bisu.

FengZi's case is more like a "China - Korea Exchange Program" as the sponsor for that SC Tourny in China is hoping to hold more BW events in the future (perhaps he might even sponsor a team). So Sonic is doing his best.
Also I vaguely remember some scheduling issues with Scan, i.e. not showing up for games, giving w.o.. Sonic tends to get quite upset with amateur players who do that.

This is awesome news. I'm just a bit confused over one thing: Blizzard is now promoting a tournament which currently doesn't have a legitimate stream for foreigners (no offense snipe, your streams are awesome, but it is pretty-ghetto for a company to promote). To me it feels a bit weird for a large company like blizzard to promote a stream that isn't an official restream of ssl

Noone says they're promoting snipe's restream specifically. They'll probably put up some news the day before the finals on their homepage/fb or something like that is what I'm imagining.
Maybe they'll do more than that, i sincerely think Blizzard returning to BW like this means they may have finally came to terms with SC2 not being a good game
My pipedream: Blizzard testing the waters for a possible BW HD version by promoting startup BW tournaments. Even if this is all just a PR ploy to get the BW players to stop hating Blizzard, it's already starting to work for me.

ick, god please no. It'd probably end up being like SSF2HD, a completely different and entirely inferior game from SF2. I just know david kim would pull a sirlin.

And worst of all, they wouldn't do it for free. They would remove lan from the game to prevent piracy and force us on bnet 2.0 ugh... Let's hope it's just a PR move to try improve their image on korea so their new dota clone has a chance to have a 1/4 the succes lol is having.
Damn sonic, all the secrecy and this was a bit underwhelming. When he said today would be more impactful and how today woongjin disbanded, it got me hyped somehow they would come back to bw, but well... too naive I guess.

Oh ma-fuh gah-wd. We all knew that the lineup was gonna be stacked, but the caster-bonjwa himself being involved was news to me at least. It's also really cool that Sonic managed to hook a new sponsor. Between all of that and the amazing offline-venue, I think it's fair to say that this will be the best SSL yet Also, Sonic's commitment to BW never ceases to amaze me. Besides getting hyped, his announcements also always make me feel intensely grateful. (BROMANCE <3)
Also, blizz being ... WAIT WHAT? Blizzard being supportive of a BW-event? o_O That seems almost too good to be true... I doubt that this is part of some greater (evil) scheme on their end, but I do wonder what caused this sudden change in approach.

At this point, there's nothing to be gained for Blizz by being anti-BW. Sonic isn't going to move to SC2, and it's not like everyone will return their SC2 copies. Blizz prob wants to support both games now, and get good PR for helping BW instead of bad press for fighting it. It's good news for BW, either way.
Y'know, one way Blizzard could kill BW is by releasing some bad patches. But I think this is probably just a positive thing and there's nothing nefarious behind it. It's cool that they're supporting BW again though! Sonic deserves the honor for keeping it alive during its rough time. Smooth sailing from here!

War 3 time ?
I was talking about patch 1.16 for BW.
Kespa teams and ICCUP stayed on 1.15.3 because 1.16 had a lot of lag issues and stuff.
This is going to be sick. Imagine if Sonic managed to usher in a revival of professional BW in Korea and it were to eclipse SC2. To already host a prize pool almost as big as some of the OSLs/MSLs is a huge thing.
I'm quite shocked Sonic isn't charging an admission fee for the offline Ro32 onwards. I feel like even if he charged like... $10 - $15, it would be quite a big boon.
I dont think he should have admission fees. If i understand it correctly, there has almost never been any in korea, even for the OSL/MSL etc. The prize pool is already amazing. Glad to have parttaken in SSL7 and that the tournament seems to be ever growing. Sonic hwaiting!

Oh God no, simple graphics makeover - whose necessity is even debatable - is not enough to compensate for horror that is bnet 2.0...
A graphics make over would result in an engine change though, and we might lose some of the better bugs that make bw playable/balanced tho.
You could just change the sprites. Changing the graphics while keeping the gameplay identical is not a programming impossibility. I'm more worried about how it would look, considering Blizzard's art style since WarCraft III.

I dunno its hard for me to get away from the gritty warlike feel of BW. if it looked like war3 id prolly kill myself.
dragoons etc didnt translate well into 3rd i noticed.
chess is not a better game with prettier game pieces. as long as stuff is easily distinguishable from other stuff then the graphics are fine; and from my point of view brood war does a better job of this than any other game with equally hectic action. There is no need to freshen up the graphics, brood war streamed at the highest quality looks pretty good.
And besides, any "graphic update" would by popular demand have to come with interface improvements which would force the rebalancing of everything and destroy 14 years of strategical development.

this. No remake of BW please. Leave the game as is. The bugs like muta stacking are due to the engine and such. Making any changes to it even graphical will have a much more profound effect than is realized.

unless I'm mistaken since I read the blog from one of starcraft's programmers(Wyatt?) a while back, he said that they changed the graphics towards the end and didn't fix it from the old ones? I can't remember anymore lol but it was the main reason that zerglings can get through some places that appeared tight compared to others that weren't tight(but they couldn't get through). I'll have to find and re-read the blog to explain what I meant but personally, I just like the graphics as they are now. New graphics would remove the feeling of BW for me

PL is actually coming back pretty soon. They've had several teams from ESF join(IM, Prime and MVP) so they are back up to the same number+1 lol. It would be nice if OGN or a large corporation sponsored SSL though. Either way, this is a very positive step for BW in KR imo

Blizzard's main page exposure and over promotion through 300k followers via Twitter most likely. So depending on how many people actually visit Blizzard's official website, that's how much increase in viewership we'll get. Most likely this will be broadcasted through Sayle so chances are that it will be streamed via Twitch.tv. The best case scenerio would be that Blizzard's support would bump BW's viewership to the frontpage of Twitch.tv and then through there, we'll see an influx of viewership from there to get a snowball effect going on.

I've just seen the parts about "Star 1 still going" etc. and replaced that with random bla's myself. I'd have to be really dumb to believe Sonic would insert random bla's himself into that o,o (and ㅋ doesn't make sense there either).

Why exactly? This seems unnecessarily petulant. If they were stepping into tell us to do this, that, and the other then sure. But providing exposure are among the better things Blizzard can do for BW. If that is what they are doing, why would we wish them ill?

The extra exposure Blizzard's support could potentially generate is HUGE. It's all about how much they will want to commit... Maybe if we choose to perceive it positively, they'll go for it Personally I could go on for days speculating on why it's a good business move for them, but this time I'll just choose to accept it as good news for Brood War, however small/big it turns out to be.
But yeah obviously Sonic's efforts and the sponsor stepping up is the main point in this. It's incredible this guy still keeps pushing the quality higher. He's taking our wildest dreams and making them happen. Last 2 years were full of hope but also insecurity. 2014 is shaping up to be a year of pure joy and excitement.

Its not really about the level of support, its the fact that Blizzard seems to have shifted their mentality from "kill BW to make SC2 successful" to supporting pro Broodwar.
Prize money difference between 1st and 2nd is absurd. Something like 1st gets 70%-100% more would feel far more appropriate. Everything else, can't wait :D

I am an optimist so taking it at face value, yes what blizzard is doing is very nice and good (maybe they finally realized cannibalizing BW for SC2 was a bad idea? Certainly was bad in korea. People in korea don't care about SC2 anymore). But it's very token. It takes very little effort to make a web banner and advertise it on their website. Unless they are actually providing sponsorship support or are doing tangible things for the game called BW, 99% of the credit remains and will remain with sonic and Monkey3. They have done so much.
As long as its just a graphics makeover (changing nothing else gamewise), i'd gladly play on bnet 2.0
Oh God no, simple graphics makeover - whose necessity is even debatable - is not enough to compensate for horror that is bnet 2.0...
I think that BW's graphics are fine as they are, but, if they were updated to HD level, that is also fine (just introducing a new version, or an updated graphics version, would do a lot for the publicity/popularity, and ultimately overall strength of BW), as long as there is no change to the gameplay (unless Blizzard finally decides to balance TvZ to some extent, e.g. attenuate the medic). What's not debatable is that theoretically having Blizzard put its weight behind a game that is actually Broodwar (in terms of gameplay) and not a terrible game like SC2, would be an extremely positive occurrence for the BW community, whatever else happens. If they could additionally implement positive changes to Bnet services, then even better.
It is very nice to see Blizzard supporting 9th Sonic Broodwar Starleague. I hope that they continue to support Sonic events, and perhaps also support BW in other ways as well, such as:
- Supporting other BW initiatives that may occur.
- Sponsoring BW individual leagues. The GOMTV Averatec Intel Classic (sponsored by Blizzard) was one of my favorite tournaments to watch. Being able to watch all the games with English commentary was very nice, and the games were very entertaining. It was a mistake for some of the Korean coaches, to not to allow their players to participate in the event. After all, the individual leagues have provided many of the most entertaining moments in eSports history, and allow the players to show their style of play to the fans. And if a company is willing to put the time and effort to organize an event and provide prize money for players, this should be appreciated. If Blizzard would decide to sponsor more Broodwar tournaments in the future, I'm sure that all the parties involved would be very appreciative, and that the tournaments would be very successful and popular - as was the GOMTV Classic, with the fans.
- supporting/sponsoring BW Proleagues.
- For future consideration: for example, making an updated version of BW with better graphics, and slight balancing changes to TvZ, would be perhaps ideal. More difficult, if theoretically possible: making an updated version of Broodwar, with the same basic gameplay (i.e. use all the same coding for the game, regarding pathing, units, etc) but with small improvements in the gameplay and perhaps additional/different units - i.e. a future truly worthy successor to Broodwar. After all, consider that BW was one of the most popular and best selling games of all time. Somehow, without even knowing what it would become, BW's designers managed to get almost every aspect of BW essentially perfect(basically except balancing TvZ sufficiently). Even after 10+ years, new strategies were still being created, and the level of play is constantly rising. The unmatched depth and entertainment value of BW, can be attributed to it's fundamental gameplay characteristics (e.g. how units move, what units do, - the unique pathing and feeling of each unit). These fundamentals that made BW so popular and successful, were completely discarded regarding the development of SC2. And unfortunately the result show it. SC2 is a terribly boring game to watch and play, that is losing popularity with time. Regarding the development of SC2, what was the rationale for drastically altering one of the most successful gaming formulas of all time? Making the game more accessible to the casual gamer? BW was already proven to be one of the most successful games of all time for casual gamers - USING THAT FORMULA. Sure, the game is relatively complex, but you can always play against someone who is equivalent to your skill level, and the game is still fun. Also, there are many fun UMS games that are popular with casual players. And if the player is very good, then BW provides the scope and complexity for the player to fully exercise their ability. BW offers something to everyone. Changing the formula in an attempt to cater to the casual gamer, ended up catering to no-one. Obviously the good news is, that the brilliancy of BW is still there. I'm sure if they decided to, Blizzard has the full capability, to do their part to bring it back to the forefront, whether it's by providing support/sponsoring for current/future Broodwar events, or eventually improving upon BW itself (but using the same basic coding), or the concepts of BW.

These types of flippant comments are just not very accurate, meaningful, or productive:
- It is important to recognize the true positive value and implications of Blizzard's proposed publicity support, not just from the potential impact on the popularity of the 9th Sonic Starleague, but from the fundamental switch in ideology it represents: if you recall, not long ago, Blizzard had some issues with KeSPA. And now? They intend to promote a BW event? Perhaps, you do not understand how shocking and potentially significant this is. Blizzard is an entity with a lot of weight behind it and a positive working relationship between Blizzard and the BW scene, opens a whole new range of potential positive future developments. Token? No. Blizzard has taken a complete unexpected 180 degree ideological turn, and all credit to them. Obviously SC2 was a terrible mistake; everything from conception to execution was a massive failure. But now they are moving in the right direction, supporting BW - one of the most popular and sucessful games of all time. If you have any criticism regarding the support they are providing, just keep it to yourself. It is only going to be counterproductive at this point. Blizzard is not obligated - and all support is welcome and appreciated, and should be positively encouraged.
- No one is trying to take credit from Sonic and the SSL sponsors. These are the commonly known facts: Sonic organizes the BW scene in Korea. Monkey3 is the sponsor for SSL 9. And Blizzard will provide publicity support (with the implication is that Blizzard now has a positive attitude towards BW, and there is the potential for additional positive developments in the future). As far as I know, no one has claimed, or assumed anything else. So, your attempt to qualify Blizzard's support, was absolutely useless. They have decided to help with publicity. That is great news. And lets hope for more.
- Just to be clear, publicity/advertising is a tangible benefit, which impacts the bottom line of a business. If you had any knowledge about how a viewership driven business like eSports operates, you would understand that a lot of time, money, and effort, is spent on advertising. It is an absolutely critical aspect. I'm sure Sonic himself understands the business logistics of the situation, and is very appreciative of Blizzard for providing this type of support; all fans of BW should be similarly appreciative. (Of course, more intensive forms of support would be welcome in addition, but publicity in and of itself is significant.) - In addition, Blizzard did indeed directly sponsor a BW tournament, e.g. regarding the 2009 GOMTV Averatec Intel Classic. However, making backhanded comments, like "it's nice what they're doing, but it's very token, and takes little effort," is not going to encourage similar such future supports. Try and be more productive with your comments. Blizzard taking a step in the right direction in supporting BW, can only be viewed as a positive development at this point. It is appreciated, and I hope they continue with such initiatives in the future.
Lol, that TvZ bias it's only hurting your credibility man. You've got good points, but really, if you played protoss, your opinion would be how broken PvZ is, and still be wrong. The game it's completely fine as it is.
And you can't blame people for being reservate and wary towards blizzard. They are the main reason bw was bereft of his own scene and being forced to grow one of his own again. Just one simple good deed ain't gonna change the hearts of the people towards them so easily.
tvz bw is the greatest matchup of the game, and quite frankly, of any game. Anything that comes close to touching tvz bw would have my immediate disapproval. There is nothing that can be done about that matchup to make it better.

Do you work at blizzard? Why are you writing a book trying to refute me? You are overreacting. Also, drop the attitude. You won't convince anyone that way.
Does people here really think SC2 and SC:BW can harm each other these days? They already have very different audience with different interests in videogames. So if even Blizzard decides to "kill" SC2 this won't help BW much.
Sonic (and every other BW events organizers inside and outside Korea) is our true hero! It is so nice that he is doing fine so far and his events become more and more succesful! So many great players and fine event organisation.

And you can't blame people for being reservate and wary towards blizzard. They are the main reason bw was bereft of his own scene and being forced to grow one of his own again. Just one simple good deed ain't gonna change the hearts of the people towards them so easily.
(The balancing issue was obviously a very minor point, not connected to the main argument at all, but I was referencing development, and for completion's sake, I included it - so take it for what it is, or even disregard it for now. I understand that all matchups are not perfectly balanced, but there is an article on Teamliquid for example, (unfortunately, don't remember the source) that discusses the specific significance of the TvZ imbalance). I could say a lot more to qualify these comments, but really, that would be a completely separate comprehensive discussion - the main point regarding the issue of Blizzard/BW/Support, is of more relevance/importance at this point. Overall, Blizzard did an exceptional job with BW - pretty much the best game ever, and like I said, it is a couple tweaks away from being essentially perfect.)
I understand the reservation regarding Blizzard - I've been as critical as anyone, regarding how Blizzard handled the whole SC2/Kespa situation; it was a complete disaster. But now, it's more about putting personal feelings aside, and being pragmatic in the current situation: What are the ultimate goals for Pro BW, and what are the ways to facilitate these goals? Blizzard made some mistakes in the past, but now they shifted their ideology and have taken steps to support BW. At this point (it is the first step after-all), there is no benefit to making critical comments about the nature of this support; it's not going to achieve anything positive for the BW scene. If someone does something positive, and you want them to continue doing such things, you encourage it in a positive manner, and provide suggestions for future actions.

NEW:Interview Girls announced! Interview Girl #1: 천보영 (Cheon Bo-Yeong), racing model who is very good with the mic according to Sonic. As a BJ expert, he should know well enough.
I'll go ahead save you the trouble: 천보영 imgur album (No NSFW although I've yet to find an employer who's okay with me browsing k-bikini girls at work.)
Interview Girl #2: 앤화이트 N-White's Ha-Kyeong 하경. We all know N-White from previous SSL Finals.
The one on the very right I believe, didn't really find any pics.

Was information about the maps released yet? Apparently Wind and Cloud and Pamir Plateau will be removed from the map pool, to be replaced by two maps from Earthattack (creator of Blue Storm, Circuit Breaker, Outsider, Destination etc.) that fit the concept of Monkey3 starleague.
Also location of group selection ceremony determined: + Show Spoiler +
King Kong Building(Ilchiart Hall)
Has 300 seats, could accommodate 350 people if standing.
I really hope the new maps won't be another slightly modified version of FS... I really want new maps, it changes the strategies and balance, and that's how a lot of entertaining games are made.

FS is by far the best map ever created. Its the most balanced and you see all the races going at it with their maximum potential. Maps like circuit breaker favor zergs/protosses and maps like destination just favor terrans. No balance there. We need to choose fs!!!

Circuit doesn't favor zerg in zvt at all. It's the opposite even.
I'm hoping the new maps get picked up by iccup to give me more variety. Nobody seems to want to play the maps I enjoy since they're never motw. This week is outsider though and that's awesome <3

What.
Destination was like 55% PvT in professional games, and Circuit Breakers like 58% TvZ.
Latest Sonic post talking about the map pool, don't know if actually says anything new though. Wind and Cloud will be used, Pamir Plateau won't, two new maps will be brought to us by Kim Eung (Earthattack), and I THINK he's saying that blue storm, circuit breaker, outsider, destination, and match point are in the map pool. Could just be saying that Earthattack made those maps though, I'm not sure. If he's just saying Earthattack made them then nothing to be said beyond "two" new maps.

He just mentions that Earhattack's maps (BS, CB etc.) are used in the ongoing SPL. And that he's going to make 2 new maps for the SSL, that's something I missed. I'll add that to op. And W&C won't be used either btw.
The only reason I don't like FS is that at D level on iCCUP every person cheeses every single game, either that or mass expands and I'm not good enough to deal with it :p
Super excited for the new maps, hopefully it's something like Outsider!
Looks pretty promising. Always if I just can't believe how much Sonic does for BW he just tops it with his next step. o.O I'm really looking forward to the next year and this season.

Also I'm not entirely sure if things have changed but even before I stopped playing BW to switch to SC2 when that came out I always found the same deal on FS. I guess it's just the opponents I face. I've had much more interesting/longer games on maps like Circuit Breaker, Sniper Ridge and Outsider than I ever did on FS. The other map I've noticed people like to all in on is Match Point. Then again it wasn't MOTW at the time so I think the other people playing it had these weird styles that I don't think'd work on any other map.

People have always complained about its PvT, and the statistics have always favoured Protoss slightly on the map. From the beginning until the end.

FS is much better than something like pylon lol. Personally, I found that most games on FS were macro games(bar a few here and there). Worst was when your opponent grabs the opposite corner and secretly expands to it without you realizing it a bit into the game lol. Not a deal breaker though
Sponsorship news SSL9 will be sponsored by Sonic himself rather than Monkey3. The contract was constantly revised by Sonic & Carry and the sponsor and both sides just couldn't come to a conclusion. SSL9 is still happening, not sure if any details like prizepool will change, we'll have to wait for some kind of an official announcement on that.

I really hope this doesn't discourage Sonic from hosting future tournaments. That is the danger with having everything run by one person, even if he is extremely passionate. In regards to your quote it depends. Both parties could have reached an agreement initially and signed the dotted line, then Monkey 3 could have made amendments (which is not unheard of) to the contract and Sonic & co. would need to intial those changes or re-sign the contract. It could have been at this point where Sonic & co. didn't agree with the amendments/new terms and the relationship broke down.
That's just an example, I don't know really know what happened behind closed doors when the contract was being discussed, but that's what could have happened, hence the announcement of the sponsor before and now the withdrawal.

But if they already signed the initial contract then why should Sonic be so obliged to accept the sponsors demands that it leads to such a horrible breakdown in the relationship if he doesn't agree? I understand that somehow things could get so bad that mutual termination is the only option. However, it seems like Monkey3 tried to strongarm Sonic into amending the contract to favour them when he was in a vulnerable position. To me that seems like Monkey3 is acting above the law so to speak. This is assuming that there was more than just a verbal agreement. If Sonic actually announced the sponsorship before getting anything in writing you have to seriously question him despite his good intentions.
edit: unfortunately this is the way of the world and no matter how unfair it is things like this will always happen no matter how hard the small fish try.

Well that's the thing, he's not obliged to sign off on the amendments (especially if he doesn't agree with them) so that's probably why Monkey3 withdrew. I don't know anything about strong arming but amendments happen all the time with contracts, it's just that both parties have to agree to the new/added terms and in this case one of them didn't it seems.
I agree with you though that his judgement would be questioned if he did in fact announce stuff without getting it finalised in writing, but I'm willing to give Sonic the benefit of the doubt that he knows better than that. Plus he had K. Carry to help him and I'm sure he knows better too.
Anyway, this really sucks considering all the other good news and hype.

It's Korea lol. I have no first hand experience to relate, but Korea doesn't strike me as a country that is as respectful to contracts as, say, Canada and the USA. Different cultures and all that. Contracts are legally binding in Canada, but it's not the case in all countries. I suspect especially with a small business / small scale operation like this, Sonic wouldn't want to even go to the trouble of enforcing a contract like that.
What I'm saying is entirely conjecture and you should do more research if you're interested in the topic, but this is the impression I've gotten from reading TL over the years, observing KeSPA etc. Long story short, probably not that much Sonic can do. If Monkey3 dropped out they probably had a reason, like unexpected expenses leaving less money in their budget for something like this or whatever. I give Sonic the benefit of a doubt, anyway.

I have lived in all three countries mentioned. Korea respects contracts as much as any country. The contract with Monkey3 was annulled rather than violated. Usually, at least one party will have the right to void the contract. This is true even in the US and Canada.
South Korea (yes, not North!) has some horrific laws (e.g., People have gone to jail for posting predictions about the financial markets on the internet as scapegoats for bad government policy) but I do not think that the lack of respect for contracts was the issue here (i.e., they respect laws, but the laws are bad?). Far more likely is the case that Monkey3 had provisions that allowed it to unilaterally back out of the contract. Sonic himself stated that both parties agreed to cancel the contract.
But yeah, there's nothing Sonic can do because everything was done legally. Monkey3 was in a position of power and wrote a contract that allowed them to do this. Given that Monkey3 is spending a lot of money on advertising in Korea, it is reasonable to assume that their sponsorship of SSL was a small expense for them. All the circumstantial evidence points to them trying to abuse their position of power because they could do so legally. I think that most small companies would have accepted Monkey3's new terms even if it meant passing the cost onto the viewers because it is a matter of survival for many of them. Sonic decided not to do so because he is not running SSL for money and has his own business.

Fair enough, but what I don't understand is, doesn't this mean that the contract between Sonic and Monkey3 wasn't finalized before the announcement of the sponsorship? I'm no businessman so correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems like an incredibly amateur mistake. I support Sonic in standing up to the company and not agreeing to w/e it was that he didn't want, but it hurts to get this announcement after all the anticipation, and on Christmas Eve and all.
I really hope this doesn't discourage Sonic from hosting future tournaments. That is the danger with having everything run by one person, even if he is extremely passionate. Judging by how devastated he sounded during the announcement, and how he let Kim Carry do most of the talking, this must have really destroyed his morale. He has the support of Kim Carry and others these days though and I think hope that that influence will help him get through this. Sonic 화이팅!

It would be interesting to know what Monkey3's plan was from start to finish - did they plan the timing/revisions from the start, or was it a subsequent decision at some point. In any case, it is notable that they got a lot of exposure, just from the announcements, for presumably no investment.
When you mentioned passing the "cost" on to viewers, was that just metaphorical? I had assumed the conditions would be relating to something like more obtrusive/frequent advertising, and that Sonic was objecting on the basis of setting a precedent for future business relations and showing he will not be pushed around by other parties; which would be a prudent consideration at this point.
In Sonic's Message, were the figures Sonic quoted for his personal subsidization of SSL7 and SSL8, in US or KR dollars?
It is good that Sonic will continue his efforts regarding BW. He is doing a good job.
it was probably some sort of unreasonably high sales quota that they wanted from Sonic's viewers. Sonic was advertising his viewers to take advantage of the Monkey3 coupon that was offered through his Afreeca page for a bit

Well, his wording seems to suggest that the "cost" part was literal dollars, but that's based on my interpretation of the innuendo, not fact. Sonic has not shown any aversion to frequent advertising in the past.
On January 04 2014 06:05 miercat wrote: In Sonic's Message, were the figures Sonic quoted for his personal subsidization of SSL7 and SSL8, in US or KR dollars?
That's a rough US dollar estimate based on recent exchange rates. Some of Sonic's past SSL non-prize expenses include: Incentive payments for wins in non-placement rounds, Travel and lodging expenses for players, Auditorium rental fees ($$$), Performance fees for girl singer groups ($$$), Booth girls' wages ($$), Staff wages ($$), Bandwidth, Door prizes, and more. There are many other expenses that go into the whole production, so I am surprised that the numbers were not higher. That said, Sonic might be far more disappointed by the loss of a sponsor who could lend more legitimacy to SSL (after all the effort he put into it) than he is by potential monetary losses (His shoe business seems to be doing well, at least anecdotally).

Just to clarify, was the wording in question essentially the following?:
"After the contracting the sponsorship, I had been making arrangements for the group selection ceremony in preparation for SSL9. Yesterday evening, Monkey3 requested that we change the content of our contract. After failing to come to a mutual agreement on the requested changes, both parties agreed to annul the contract today. (T/N: We know that the contract was signed already because it needed to be annulled)
Although I did everything to continue with the league sponsorship, I determined that it was too unreasonable for me to impose the new conditions proposed by Monkey3 on you---the viewers. This was the biggest reason for the decision to void the contract."
Based on the content of that specific message i.e.: "[imposing new conditions on the viewer]" it seems difficult to ascertain the nature of the conditions, and I did not see anything that would specifically imply monetary costs for the viewer. Perhaps there could be subtleties to the original message, or additional contextual information that I'm not aware of.. but, theoretically, it would seem like a direct monetary cost to the viewer would be a somewhat radical, unlikely, and potentially counterproductive. The SSL Leagues have been broadcasted for free on Afreeca, and the OSL/MSL, other tournaments, have never had a direct cost associated with viewing. The paradigm has always been sponsor money=viewership/advertising. I'm not sure if it would make sense for monkey3 to sponsor a tournament (and presumably want as many viewers as possible, to maximize advertising power) but then impose some sort of monetary cost on viewers- which is only going to lower viewership. The specifics are unclear, but it seemed reasonably likely that the "conditions" mentioned, might be regarding things that would negatively affect the viewing experience...possibly something relating to frequency of advertising, but possibly something else. But yes, this is just an interpretation based on limited information.

My guess is an interpretation as well. 1) Frequency of sponsor mentions has never been a big deal for Sonic and part of a running joke on his channel. 2) As you say, I don't think that they were going to set up a pay wall for the reasons you describe. 3) One speculation that others have also brought up is a clause requiring a certain number of people to sign up or buy stuff on the Monkey3 site. I would consider that a direct cost even if it isn't a pay wall for watching. Most Koreans are tied into a music service called Melon (it's that green music player that you often see on streams) that dominates most of the market and offers a better music selection...
As curious as everyone is about the exact details of what happened, I am afraid that we will never know. All that is left is to support Sonic, I guess.
The group selection ceremony is going to be the shiznit. :-)

EDIT: Also, I just noticed that he changed the map pool for the various rounds. It seems more and more likely that Bisu will reach the finals. Circuit Breaker is included in all stages. He has been unbeatable on what is called Taek-cuit Breaker for the last two months. I heard that his win rate is above 80% on Circuit Breaker over 30+ games in the last few months.
Hello it’s me Sonic. SSL9 started off with a mental breakdown (for me), but good news is coming in after a successful group ceremony ^^ One thing is GomTV will be hosting a starleague too. Some people are saying “they are competition” but I didn’t started hosting starleagues for the monetary benefit and you can't really compare my stream to such a big company like GomTV (T/N: not sure on this part) Seeing starcraft leagues grow and become active was what I wanted to see most. I hope other broadcasters may take interest in brood war as well.
Second, while I was under a lot of pressure attempting to run this SSL myself a company sponsor gave me a helping hand. Humanworks Co. (http://www.humanworks.com) is the new main sponsor. A company started in 2005, currently they are a company making FIX earphones and many different smartphone accessories You guys have probably heard of FIX earphones ^^ In 6 months, over 200,000 FIX earphones were sold, they are a company well recognized in the earphone business^^ There will be a supplier for FIX earphones so I will be sure to link it to a banner (on his afreeca page).
Humanworks' GameAngel is 10,000+ different flash games, social commerce apps, smartphone acecssories and And a growing company in the web and mobile business in the past they ran web games like 7th dragon. Please take the time to register to their site, and play some games in your free time. I'd be very grateful.
During SSL9, not only is there the main sponsor money, but Humanwork's representative and I came to many agreements for events and a variety of other things. The negotiations and talks went well and we finished all the contracting. With help from the fans, next time I'm sure we will be able to secure even better sponsors. I would like to thank the fans and the Humanworks rep again for helping me out in this time of hardship. Even if though it may be tedious, please register a lot on GameAngel and buy FIX earphones from Humanworks! If you could write words of encouragement on the news articles I'd be very grateful and I'm sure it'll give sonic starleague strength to last the long run. The main sponsor Humanworks' rep said the amount of passion the fans showed at the group ceremony really made a good impression.
The contract was made hastily, to ask a company for a big monetary sponsorship takes time and preparation so I wasn't able to bring the prize pool up to what it was before. Plus, the current Blizzard license I have has a limit to how much prize money I can give out. So, in a haste, we altered the current SSL9 prize pool as seen below Although the change in winnings is small, the winnings for advancement and wins has been increased providing better benefits for all the players participating.
Prize Money: 1st: 7mil Won -> 6mil Won + 2mil Won gift certificate for a total of 8mil Wn 2nd: 3mil Won -> 3mil Won + 1mil Won gift certificate for a total of 4mil Won 3rd: 1mil Won -> 1mil Won + 1mil Won gift certificate for a total of 2mil Won
Bonus Winnings: Advancing to ro16: 50,000 Won -> 100,000 Won Advancing to ro8: 100,000 Won -> 200,000 Won 3rd place match: 50,000 Won -> 100,000 Won (Per win in the 3rd place match) Finals: 100,000 Won -> 150,000 Won (Per win in the Finals)
Note: bonus winnings add up. for instance, in the 3rd place match if you finish 3rd ro16 adv + ro8 adv + 3rd place match per win + 3rd place prize money is obtained.
in the previous starleague (itembay) they sponsored 15mil Won and some people may have assumed I took a cut. Prize money and bonuses aren't the only things that go into hosting a tournament. And contracts will have conditions that cannot be agreed on. And while I thought I had to run this SSL out of my own pocket they (the sponsor) gratefully stepped in and offered help. While the prize money didn't increase much the bonus winnings have almost doubled and there will be a variety of events that the main sponsor and I will be running and I feel we will be able to enjoy starleague even more than before. I mentioned this before but I do not take a single cent for personal benefit from the sponsor money.
Everyone, I will request one more time. If you guys can bring that passion that you showed at group ceremony to starleague, I will try my hardest to make sure players will experience an even more glorious and successful starleague and fans will enjoy an even higher quality starleague Please support FIX starleague SSL9 Thank You.

It says first 2 matches BO3 and then all three matches BO1. (Yesterday, final match was a BO3.) That's just one post by Sonic which could potentially be a mistake rather than an actual adjustment. Although the cast did take quite long yesterday and there are 3 Terrans in the group.
The other interview girl this time! Cheon Bo-Yeong~
Yeah, while I also prefer final elimination match to be less variable, I guess it's somewhat understandable due to long broadcast time and visitor convenience (better fit with transport times).
