Fellow BWers, this past summer, I went back to China. There I discovered that a cousin of my dad owns a "PC bang" there with about 200 computers in the venue. From the place, the stats were given that 9 computers were playing "SC1" on the local server when he showed us his mainframe computer that keep tract of everything. You can sort of extrapolate that around 4.5% of Chinese PC gamers are still very much interested in the game.
When I asked him about SC2, he told me along the line that is a "too expansive of a game that's not worth its price.", he purchased some copies of WoL in 10 computers, and it is barely being played there with statistics like at the highest peak, only 6 of those were being played over 4 months. Because of lack of interest, he felt that investment in such game would not generate enough profit.
i'm a little confused about the 2v2, like it says 8 players total but I assume 2v2 is different than the 1v1 players (potential overlap, but qualify differently)
similarly how do you have a "top 5" in 2v2 unless it, I assume, means top 5 teams of 2.

it's still under discussion.
sounds great! but with offline finals in China might be problems for foreigners
I don't know, I never had a problem applying for a Chinese visum (from Germany). In fact, you don't even have to appear at the embassy in person, there are plenty of small companies who will handle the application process for you for little money.
edit: unless you mean shouldering the traveling costs, that might be a problem. While flights to China aren't expensive, if you book a flight short time, it might very well be.
