Fuck I'll be on holidays, I'm gonna miss this. Please tell me Bisu and Jangbi are not coming to Shanghai while I'm away. Holidays really suck if you ask me.
Otherwise, this is a sick event ! Many times, I wondered why none of us, thousands of BW fans had become a millionaire and sponsored a big BW event. Looks like it's finally happening !
I'm still wondering how can Koreans participate to the offline event, it's such an incredibly short notice, and they need to book a flight and get a visa...
They should totally have korean commentators too on scene, like back in the day when tastless was shoved into a tiny noisy corner of the WCG broodwar tournament

sounds great! but with offline finals in China might be problems for foreigners

Well same goes for Chinese players attending "foreign" tournaments as well... You say it as if Chinese players won't have any problem whatsoever...
hell yeah !!! Awesome news ! This is going to be pretty damn amazing ! I hope they'll invite Jangbi amongst these 3 koreans that the OP was writing about.
and this prizepool.. wow ^^
Chinese BW is really something huh ? Wish there was more coverage of their SCene..

Fuck that's a lot of money!
I'd really like to see who's participating. I'm also curious about how many people actually watch these events. Is there Korean commentary?
we foreseen there will be no Korean commentary, only Chinese commentary is available. as most of the spectator will be Chinese......
about the number of spectator, I can give you a image: now the CSPL match usually has about over 10,000 online viewers per match.
Anyway whoever organized this event is awesome, but I'd wish they'd reach out to Sonic and TL and say like. Would you like to cast this?
I mean it doesn't hurt anybody it can only do good.
I'm gonna crazy I just closed this page without saving my post!!!!!!!
Re-type it again.
Do you mean you want the broadcaster SCNTV contact with Sonic and Teamliquid so as you guys outside China can also watch it? I would say in fact SCNTV and Sonic should be already communicated in before.
in fact one Chinese player just attend SRT and reached RO16.

He's talking about letting Sonic / Korean commentators get a feed of the matches and casting / rebroadcasting it.

There will be 3 Koreans invited and 2 players invited by the sponsors, so there will be 3 to 5 Koreans attending the offline finals, with possibly a star like Jangbi ? That would definitely justify an English/Korean cast.
It would also increase the chances to get international companies sponsor BW. I love this CEO from Wenzhou, but he sponsoring this event as a fan, he won't get much return from his sponsoring. SSL is getting decent sponsors, but Itembay is not getting any return from foreign audiences. I don't expect Gillette or Coca-Cola or Pringles to sponsor a BW tour, but I believe that a company with interests both in Korea and China could get a decent exposure with the combined viewing figures.
Fellow BWers, this past summer, I went back to China. There I discovered that a cousin of my dad owns a "PC bang" there with about 200 computers in the venue. From the place, the stats were given that 9 computers were playing "SC1" on the local server when he showed us his mainframe computer that keep tract of everything. You can sort of extrapolate that around 4.5% of Chinese PC gamers are still very much interested in the game.
When I asked him about SC2, he told me along the line that is a "too expansive of a game that's not worth its price.", he purchased some copies of WoL in 10 computers, and it is barely being played there with statistics like at the highest peak, only 6 of those were being played over 4 months. Because of lack of interest, he felt that investment in such game would not generate enough profit.
i'm a little confused about the 2v2, like it says 8 players total but I assume 2v2 is different than the 1v1 players (potential overlap, but qualify differently)
similarly how do you have a "top 5" in 2v2 unless it, I assume, means top 5 teams of 2.

I don't know, I never had a problem applying for a Chinese visum (from Germany). In fact, you don't even have to appear at the embassy in person, there are plenty of small companies who will handle the application process for you for little money.
edit: unless you mean shouldering the traveling costs, that might be a problem. While flights to China aren't expensive, if you book a flight short time, it might very well be.

the round ticket fare between Frankfurt to Beijing or Shanghai just cost around 800 EURO, for your Europeans it's cheap...
I've travlled to Darmstadt (small city close to Frankfurt) many times.....

lol 800 e is like a month's salary in many eu countries
I'm really looking forward to this event, I wonder which of the Chinese players will make it out of the qualifiers, and who the sponsor's favorites are :D
@michaelxie Any idea on what dates the playoffs are going to be at? Qualifiers are starting on 22/23 right?
Just shy of $25,000 for first place is sick. If this becomes a regular thing, playing BW will become a viable profession again! Players can win lots of money from tournaments, while big tickets like Jangbi also earn a smaller but reliable income streaming on the side (kind of like SC2 pros make money, I guess).
This might be the best news to happen to BW in years.

i heard he got smashed by the current afreeca top dogs and moved on to lol. personally, im glad he's not around anymore.
Oh really? Where do you have that information from? I heard he wasn't even playing brood war on a high level since they didn't allow him to compete in the Sonic starleague. Anyway, i understand it's a controversy, but everyone should get a second chance. Even him. Though i am biased, because he has always been my favorite progamer, i still think that getting a second chance would be fitting. If he is humble enough he himself would decide not to do it. About him moving to lol, i'm always sad when someone leaves the BW/sc2 scene for LoL. Just makes me sad.
Sounds great, can't wait to see who gets invited and such. I can only presume Bisu and Jangbi will be one if not two of the three invites seeing as they are going for military after they take a break
A 128 players online qualifier is held, and top 3 advance, joining 3 invited Koreans, and 2 others players chosen by the sponsor for a 3-day offline finals in Shanghai.

Something is live on 1.scntv.com, but it's lagging terribly, so It's barely watchable. I believe people of the stream are talking about this as well, so it might be them having problems, not just us being far away?

Not too sure about that.
There will be three Koreans (I think they talked about Movie, Sea and Bisu) and I'm pretty sure Fengzi is better than Sziky. There are a couple of other very strong Chinese players who could probably play at Sziky's level on a good day.

I was thinking of that too, but I'm not sure it's worth putting the 128 players qualifiers on LP. I will certainly make a page for the offline tournament as soon as we have more details about it.

yes I believe so. I don't think SSL went that high and SRTs definitely don't.
I don't want to miss it.. So I'm going to ask once again - is this real life ? and the second question - So when the actual offline tournament is going to start !?

As far as I know, the 128 players qualifier is online. Then an 8 players offline finals will be played in Shanghai, but no date has been announced yet. I'll definitely attend, especially if they invite Bisu !
Not much of a BW follower but I want to watch this! It's already the 25th so the tournament has started...is there any news on who's attending, and where the streams / VODs are going to be?

Some VODs have been released already. Unfortunately scntv.com has not created a tag for this tournament yet, so VODs have all been put under the "other" category. You can find them here, VODs for this tournament are the one starting with 亚洲星际公开赛 http://sc.scntv.com/vod/other/
