I love Broodwar in and of itself, without thought or hesitation, without lingering doubts on my sanity. I love it purely, passionately. I love it for the difficulty of splitting probes. I love it for the feeling of awe when I attempt to micro my mutas. I love it for the frantic reaver micro and the more frantic chase of scarab and SCV. I love it for the clunky dragoons and the spider mine daebak. I love it for the euphoria of victory and the frustration of defeat.
There is no measure to how far Broodwar has influenced my thoughts and my actions. Its lessons run deep: Manage every aspect of your base and your life. Micro what you can in front of you, but always think of the bigger picture. There is a time to rush at instances of opportunity, and a time to sit back, collect yourself and expand your resources. Always be Calm but don't clam up your sense of adventure. And most important of all, practice practice practice.
And when my day is done, when my children and my children's children have decided to try their hand at this game called life, I will watch them with wistful eyes, just as I watched Lee Young Ho grow up and into his destiny. I will encourage them to play and laugh and run their fingers through their Kim Taek Yong-like hair. I will counsel them when their eyes are lit aflame with Lee Jaedong's rage. I will comfort them when they get 2nd place like Song Byung Goo.
And I will tell them to explore, imagine, innovate; to sing, dance, and lose yourself; to love another and to believe in the impossible, because a man named Lim Yo Hwan once did, and there is no greater path in life than that walked by emperors.

The original, the best.
The history. The ceremonies. The BM. The Dong. The Passion. The Insanity. The great and the absurd. The casters. The players. The fangirls.
Hyuk leaving a 3HP nexus to attack a zealot. Hyuk letting vultures in his main on a map where Zerg walls in. Hyuk all-killing SKT1
Effort taking an OSL finals from Flash. Finals in an aircraft hanger. Dreamliner being the best map ever, not because it was playable, but because it was a goddamn plane.
The ICCUP matches on Python. The ICCUP matches on Python. The ICCUP matches on Python. The ICCUP matches on Python. The ICCUP matches on Python. The ICCUP matches on Python. Trying to get people to play me on Andromeda. Trying to figure out how to host games (an ability I've since lost, I can't open ports ;_;) Being in E Having people recognize me because of my blog. Being convinced that a mouse was a good thing to have when playing starcraft, after failing with my laptop trackpad. The ICCUP training program giving me strategy tips when I was floating a million dollars and a hooker. Race switching out of Terran because I can't wall off properly (I still can't!)
Watching Cholera, Klazart, and later Nukethestars. Moletrap being useful, an ability he's since lost (oh snap!)
Falling out of love with Brood War. Falling back in love with Brood War.
Flash vs Jaedong in the finals Flash vs Jaedong in the finals Flash vs Jaedong in the finals Flash vs Jaedong in the finals Flash vs Jaedong in the finals Flash vs Jaedong in the finals Flash vs Jaedong in the finals Screaming obscenities at my screen when the power went out and KeSPA gave Jaedong the game even though Flash was totally winning

Being a kid, and playing primitive proto-dotas on Battle net. NR 20 7-vs-1 computer Fastest Map Ever Fastest Map Ever, NR 20 It's NR20, that was totally 19:50.
The awesome plot. The mediocre missions. The fucking awful installation missions where you fought three marines and had to read a book while Kerrigan healed back up. Brood War having better missions, The BW opening. The BW ending. Being surprised when Kerrigan came back. Admiral Stukov is pants-eatingly retarded.
Playing Warcraft 3 like it was Starcraft, getting pissed at the low supply cap and slow-ass only one unit needed missions, and knowing BW was better.
Trying to make custom levels. "You have to get past a massive minefield!" Why is there s ~26,000 sprite limit that so arbitrary I need more enemy mines
Being excited for SC2 (OMG TROLLAN)
Starting to get SC2 overload
Check out BW again.
Better than I remembered it.

Why do I love BW you ask.... Geez, why DON'T I love Brood War!!!! I still remember that one fated morning....me and my relatives were having dumplings and my cousin placed the Brood War CD in the computer and the first thing I've noticed were the images of all of the races and as he started playing "Show me the money" lol, I IMMEDIATELY noticed the Hydralisk in the game and he was annoyed because I kept asking questions about the game but from that moment on, I just KNEW that I was a Zerg player. The more and the more I've learned about the Zerg backstory, the more I was in awe. Such race that have so much harmony with each other. Anyways flash forward 9 years and here I am....watching some OSL!

I discovered BroodWar back in 2000, when my friend was playing one of the Terran missions on a Windows 98. I remember him telling me that bunker-turret supported by tanks was the best possible defense in the entire game. I tried playing through all the campaigns but it was very difficult for me and I often resorted to cheats (Power Overwhelming, Black Sheep Wall, Where is the Money FTW!!!).
For a long time from the summer of 2001 to about Christmas 2008 the BW CD just collected dust under my bed, but one night I was bored and miraculously decided to give it a second try.
I don't remember how I found out about TeamLiquid, but the very first pro player I found about was Nal_Ra. I remember being amazed by his "Dreamer Toss" style. From there I discovered the legends known as Boxer, Nada, Bisu, Jaedong, and Flash. At that point I was simply in love with the pro scene: how players had to compete for spots on teams by winning the Courage Tournament and struggle through blistering competition just so they could go pro, how many would practice for hours beyond the requirements stipulated by their teams, the magic of Proleague and MSL/OSL, the glitz and glam of the stage overshadowed by the sheer diligence and hard work required of the progamer lifestyle, the distinct personalities of each of the pro players both in their play and in their interactions, the amazing rivalries yet humbling camaraderie within and between teams, and of course the electrifying fans and commentators who really brought the game to life.
Why do I love BroodWar and the Korean pro scene? It's hard to explain it in words really. It's just extraordinary, really unlike anything I've ever seen before.

I love Brood War because it is so encompassing. I tell my friends, Brood War is not a game- it is a lifestyle. A fan does not simply play BW, he lives BW, he thinks BW; it is the only game to which I have ever been addicted. I love Brood War because of the commentators- Klazart, Diggity (now converted to SC2), and especially Nuke the Stars. His music from Effort's OSL floats through my mind with the intensity and focus of every high-stakes TvZ trailing shortly behind it, a streamer in the wind of my mind. It is a lifestyle we all choose, and I love it.

This thread remind me to my best friends. My best friends once asked me why I'm love Starcraft so much and I was speechless for a while. Why? Then, she say to me how weird I am. I took time to tell her because nobody asked me like that before this.
Here is my answer: I love Starcraft not because the cute of progamer or the progamer is handsome or whatsoever but this game is unique. The progamer, they are human like us too but how they can develop a great strategies to win while play the game in TV match which is live is more unique. And also when I play, it really test your ability how to win with your own strategy.
Joy and sadness especially after watch your favorite team or players lost or win. And how i can keep watching the Vods again and again = that special about Starcraft even though I'm not understand what the commentator say. It beyond the world and all of us unite in one place, here in TL ( since TL is the only place I can communicate and share my opinion regarding Starcraft )

Broodwar is the game that I found illegal cd keys for when I lost mine, because I didn't wait the three days to get a new one from blizzard in the mail. It's the game my best friend and I bought again after graduating college (because I still needed a cd key and he needed the install for a mac) so that we could get back in touch with each other. To this day, BW has been the thing that has kept our relationship strong.
Even when we made the dangerous decision to train 1v1 against each other (I never want to play another TvZ on destination for as long as I live) and we would yell and curse at each other during the game, and the winner was always elated and the loser wanted to die, but every game ended the same:
gg sir. gg again? give me a second kk go
Because BW taught us to respect each other. Without ever telling us, it taught us that when we lost, we should look inside ourselves to find the answer why, and that our opponent was only doing what we were doing. Trying to be better than the day before.

Brood War means quite a hell of a lot for me. My mother decided to undergo training in computer maintenance and repair, so for me, unlike the vast majority of the people around me, I always had a computer, and after about 1998, always had an internet connection. Starcraft (the original) was what kept me in the house and ate up all of my time despite how bad I was at it, while my older brother went out, got entangled in the local cliques, and that began his downfall into crime, for which he is still in and out of jail.
Later, I met my soon to be stepdad who had on his computer the Starcraft Brood War Beta, at which I instantly creamed myself with excitement. That began probably the strongest link in my relationship with my stepdad, our love of Starcraft. A few years later (after 2001 but noticably before the release of Warcraft 3), Knowing my enthusiasm for the game, my stepdad introduced me to one "Slayers`Boxer`" and the fact that there was a professional scene around game. While I was interested, it was a limited interest until he started to give me replays and links to stuff about the big Protosses of the time, and being not only a Protoss player, but someone who was absolutely in love with the idea of the protoss race, I instantly became attached to the name Nal_Ra. As well, my stepdad began teaching me how to play competitively, teaching me about foreign ideas such as "Build Orders", "Keeping your money low" "Constantly building workers" and so forth.
For years after, my love of Starcraft was always fostered by Starcraft Legacy, a site no doubt most people in the BW community for any reasonable amount of time are familiar with, but over time the lack of info to keep my attention was just not happening with Starcraft legacy, although I always checked back to see things like the Pimpest plays, or who won the latest titles, or to watch some featured replay or another. By 2006, however, my attention turned to Basketball and my play time was eaten up by Warcraft 3, my nigh constant trickle of BGH and LT games not withstanding.
However, my interest in Starcraft picked up again hardcore through the SomethingAwful thread run by Fakesteve "Ask me about Pro Starcraft", where I fell in love with the scene all over again, and was introduced to the GOM leagues, where for the first time in my life, I was given consistent english commentary of Starcraft games, as well as the link to Teamliquid, a site I never knew existed until then. For the next year, I completely ruined my sleep schedule to keep up with the Gom classic, MSL, OSL and proleague. I even tried my hand at getting better at Brood War to no avail.
The biggest, most heartwarming starcraft event of all time for me, though, was every weekend for the entire run of it, my stepdad and I would set the TV up to play the TSL2 stream, and we sat there and watched starcraft together. This meant a lot, as for years he hasn't been paying attention at all, what with his job taking up all of his time and my mother of course taking up the rest of it.
I'm rambling and I'm sure I've completely managed to miss some key things here, but I think it says enough that, without ever being a notable or particularly dedicated fan, that I can write this much about my history with starcraft and still feel I'm missing parts.
I love this game.

JangBi, Stork, and Starcraft Brood War fighting!!

plus, brood war is a way better name than wings of liberty
|
I'm quite tanked right now but I love BW because it is the greatest game I have ever played. I joined TL because of SC2 but it pales to BW
|
When watching top players play and making me wonder "wait wait wait.. you can do that?"

What's not to Love about BW? It's like jumping out of an exploding helicopter with no parachute, while Chuck Norris wrestles with 3 bears. Naked. Okay maybe that has nothing to do with Starcraft but that's how Awesome it is.
Although becoming a pro is just a Fantasy to most people, it doesn't stop anyone from drinking bear semen in an EffOrt to become at least as half as good as Jaedong. Yes, bear semen. For Relaz. http://bearsemen.com/.
One of the best things about Starcraft is the online community. Who doesn't love discussions about strategy, certain progamer's body and other generally random things on oh I don't know...maybe some kind of online forum...GosuGamers perhaps?
|
I love BW because of NaDa's body thread
|
because of nada's body !!!

i love broodwar for influencing starcraft 2 arrival

I love brood war because its old like a grandma. And who doesn't love his or her grandma?
BW is great, the only thing I hated about BW is OZ. I swear everytime OZ wins a part of me dies so when they decided to disband I was jumping and screaming in joy.
The first time Flash busted out his double armory FE on Katrina(I think, the bullshit TvP map) was so epic. Dam toss and their 2 base carrier play. Also Savior's muta vs Boxer's goliath micro and Yellow vs Bisu was godly.
|
i just stayed up till the sun rose watching the osl semifinals. I am now sleep deprived, fighting a cold, dead tired, ready to collapse, and I'm loving every fucking moment of it. That's just how awesome BW is.
|
I don't even play SC/BW! ^.^ but I've been watching e-sport since the beginning and I couldn't stop since. My first e-sport match was Grrr... vs Boxer. Back then, pros still cluster their tanks together and siege/unsiege at the same time and P's response is normally storm. Boxer was the first one to have the multitask ability to split the tanks during a battle. Wow, time has changed... but my love for BW is now stronger than ever.

I love Broodwar because It was almost a ritual in my household. My father played Warcraft 2 with his buddies, they'd all get together and literally bring there now ancient systems and wed set up 4 pcs in the kitchen and have a lan going. At that point I was maybe 8 or 9, when i first saw Starcraft. It really was a truly amazing game compared to War2. 3 completely different races, so much more was possible within the game. (My mind was particularly blown that you could control more then 9 units at once ) I just remember sitting up way past my bed time just to try to watch my dad and his friends stomp all over each other at night, this was just about every weekend. They would get so into it and yell and shout, and always at the end it was laughs and handshakes all around. It really showed me how great gaming was and inspired me to pick up the mouse myself. Starcraft is so much more then a game, its a way of life to so many, to think here in the US kids want to grow up to join the MLB or NBA, and in Korea theres kids striving to be professional Starcraft players. Livelihoods have been made off of this game, a true cultural phenomenon. Particularly Starcraft left such a mark on my childhood and I think is much more then partially responsible for my passion for gaming that ive carried with me since those lans in my kitchen almost 11 years ago ^_^.
