YGClan - Hello, Pragamer Back Yong-Ook (Kingdom). This is a YGClan interview.
Kingdom - Yes, Hello.
YGClan - First thing’s first, name, age, city, etc.
Kingdom - Name: Back Yong-Ook
Age: 23 (1983)
Weight: 60kg (-_-)
City Born In: Kyung-sang (State) South-east mil-yang (City) (경상남도
밀양)
City I Live In: Pusan
Family: Father, Mother, little brother, I’m the oldest son.
YGClan - I see, you come from Pusan along with Back Jong-suk ([Oops]Reach).
Kingdom - I was born in Milyang, but I lived in Pusan for over 10 years. My Elementary, Middle, and Highschool years were all in Pusan. I only went to college for 1 semester, then moved to Seoul and started gaming seriously.
YGClan - It doesn’t seem like you have much of a Pusan accent, is this intentional?
Kingdom - When I was in Hanbit team, many people from Kyun-sang were there so I had a pretty bad accent. Of course so was Reach and Do-gyung hyung (H.O.T-Forever) there were quite a few others who were from Pusan. But once I went into Team Orion and met a lot of Seoul people, my accent gradually went away. Course there’s still a bit left.
YGClan - Is there a special reason you wanted to become a progamer?
Kingdom - At first when I started playing SC I got addicted to it. But you know us Koreans like to win rather than just have fun. So then I started playing ladder games, and then one night on TV I saw Shin Ju-Young (Shinjuyoung from KTF Magici@ns). He explained that he was a Progamer and said the pay is good enough to live normally. That’s when I started being interested… I guess that’s when it all started.
YGClan - So eventually you became a Progamer… You must have gone through a lot to get here. Do you have any happiest moments or most depressing moments?
Kingdom - Well I got addicted in my third year at middle school, and on my first year in high school I started participating in PC bang (cyber cafe’s) tournaments. I took first place on my first tournament… I got a few pc bang coupons and some money. So then I went to other places and took first place on all of them. And then in my second year of High School I went to a tournament that wasn’t being hosted at a PC bang… it was held in the middle of Pusan, and a lot of famous gamers from Seoul participated. The first person I met was H.O.T-Forever, and then Lee Jeh-gyoon (리재균 dunno who he is)… I was so nervous seeing people I only saw on TV and on battle.net… but unfortunately I was eliminated a long with the people I came with… I thought ‘Seoul gamers are a on a whole new level…’ . And then at Pusan they made a team. I was the 11th graduate from my school, and the first graduate was the owner of the PC bang… and he offered us a contract… so our team was active for a few months. Obviously we made a few trips to Seoul, but since I was still in High School it was very exhausting when I wasn’t on vacation.
During that time I fought a lot with my parents. They were both officers and when I told them I would be participating in matches my school principle came and spoke with my mom to work it out and I was eventually able to participate in the tournament. The tournament was KBK and when I was eliminated I really couldn’t face my parents. And so eventually I went into College before I started doing what I really wanted to.
During all that… someone I knew hooked me up so I went under Head coach Lee Jae-gyun... that was before the contract with Hanbit soft… and then the first tournament I participated in was the Hanbit soft Ongamenet Starleague… I advanced to the main draw and expanded my image a bit… when I came back to Pusan I was so happy… that was right before the start of my final year in High School;; the second game with Lim Yo-hwan (Boxer, who else) on the round of 16 was probably on the back to school day. Since that was important I had to go to school, and it turns out my 3rd year homeroom teacher was the same person from my 1st year. And since he knew about my gaming career from back then he let me go as soon as I told him I had an important match to play at Seoul that night. And so the Hanbit tourney ended and for the rest of the year I was quiet. Right before College started I entered in another tournament at Seoul, but obviously I was very rusty… I forgot everything I learned from experience… I played a few times on b.net but still it wasn’t nearly enough… After my first semester ended I took a leave of absence from school and came to Seoul… it was almost like running away from my parents. They wanted to send me to the army but since I wouldn’t come back to Pusan from Seoul… and since I was taking a leave of absence I didn’t get a warrant or anything (in Korea, all men have to serve the military for about 2 and a half years)…
And then from Hanbit team I switched to Dong-yang team… and during the conversation with manager Joo-hoon my parents were mentioned. When I explained the situation he wanted to meet them and explain to them the situation and try to convince them to change their minds… When my father came to Seoul for a business trip, he stopped by our quarters… and after manager Joo-hoon spoke to him he convinced him to help me. And then I won the proleage and was able to participate in the Starleague… I wasn’t able to show them a victorious moment before and I really wanted them to see me win so I trained really hard for that. Gaming while my parents were against it was the hardest time for me. When I won at the jam-shil baseball stadium in front of my parents was the happiest for me.
YGClan - Thank you for answering with a lot of detail. Now I’m gonna change the questions to relate to the game more. A question many people have is your probe control at the beginning part of the game. Do you have a special technique?
Kingdom - Well rather than a technique… everyone has a favorite unit… mine is the Dragoon and the Probe. When it comes to microing units I get a sence of protection. And eventually I paid more attention to that… back then there were few people who microed around with their probe in the opponent’s base for that long… and when your protoss you usually want to do something many people can’t do. That’s one of the reason I chose protoss… It’s not really a technique, just something that happened gradually as I paid more and more attention to it.
YGClan - What do you think about your nickname Devil Toss?
Kingdom - Well let’s see… it probably started around the Hanbit Tourney… I think it was Jong ill-hoon who said it first I guess that’s how nicknames start usually. At first it was weird but after a while I wanted it to have a strong impression so I worked harder… heh… and also when I was little and watched cartoons or movies and it’s good vs bad for some reason I would root for the bad guy -_-; since everyone roots for the good guy it’s fun to try the opposite… the devil itself is the opposite of human heh;; fits me doesn’t it?
YGClan - heh heh; next question… what is the reason for the account Kingdom?
Kingdom - When I first started battle.net I thought about an idea for 3 days… your ID is like a second name so I wanted it to be cool… and I wanted it to be unique… the first ID I made was kingdom.kill. In elementary when I wrote it out… it’s not really a reason I just liked it myself keke… kingdom means kingdom in English… I wanted to make a kingdom…
YGClan - I see =),next question… when your gaming how do you use your hotkeys.. could explain a little?
Kingdom - When the game starts I hotkey my nexus to 0, gateways to 3, and 4, and zealots or probes to 1 and 2… then if I get a shuttle I hotkey that to 3… then mid-game I switch my gates to 5~9.. if I have 2 nexuses then 0 is the main nexus and 9 is the natural nexus… if I get more than 5 gateways then they replace the nexus hotkeys… when I have two groups of units then they’re 1 and 2 while shuttle is 3.. if units are 3 groups then 1, 2, and 3 are units while 4 is shuttle, ㅡ..ㅡ; my fingers are so short so when I’m producing zealots then I have to use both hands ㅡ.ㅡ;
*The during the break we talked about tea*
YGClan - Well since we were talking about drinking…did you drink Tea often?
Kingdom - I use to drink it instead of water, but now I just drink it every now and then… when my inside feels weird… about a cup after every workout?
YGClan - Our next question is what your think about your nickname Tea Toss… Please explain to those who don’t know why you got that nick.
Kingdom - Well about that… I think it’s ok, many people wonder and ask since it has nothing to do with the devil. Heh heh the reason for the nick is probably the Guillete round of 16 first game against Kim Jung-min (TheMarine) when I win I have this thing… when I do my best and I have a good feeling about it I have this warm feeling inside… and want to shout out loud… and want to throw my hands in the air.. that stuff…. and after the game I was really thirsty… when I looked around there was Tea -_-;; so I drank it really fast… and that day I saw the effect on the net ㅡ.ㅡ;
YGClan - Oh you didn’t prepare the Tea before the game? -_-;
Kingdom - Then I prepared it myself… but now my fans like to bring it;; When I’m gaming I always prepare a towel, a hand warmer and a drink.. I sweat a lot.. and get really hot too…
YGClan - Do you have a present you got from fans that was special to you?
Kingdom - Well they give me anything I can use… all presents I’m very thankful for and don’t really have a special one >.< well if I really have to chose… the humidifier… I get colds pretty often you see.. thanks to the humidifier this winter I’m able to hang in there.
YGClan - I’m sure if the person who sent it saw this interview they’ll feel blessed^^ Next question… Do you have a progamer you are really good friends with?
Kingdom - Well I’m friendly with all my T1 teammates (editor’s note: SK Telecom… T1, for short) since we’ve all been through a lot together… those who were with me from Hanbit like H.O.T-Forever, [Oops]Reach, Kim Dong-soo (Garimto), Jo Hyoung-geun (Qoo)Clon), and Lee Jae-hoon (Foru) who gives me great advice I’m friendly with as well.
YGClan - During practice or tournaments, who is the hardest to play against?
Kingdom - Hmm… for Protoss it would have to be Reach, terran it’s probably Choi Yon-sung (iloveoov), and zerg it’s anyone from the same team -_- Lee Chang-hoon (sigamari), Sung Hak-seung (Mumyung), Yun Jong-min (Rumble), Yun Sang-min (??) pro… when I meet them at tournaments I feel like I’m gonna lose… even when I was in Hanbit with Back Gyung-lak (Junwi_[sam]), Jung Je-ho (??) or Clon… I have the hardest time with teammates.
YGClan - There were many questions about the game against Byun Eun-jong ([GsP]JJu+___+)… obviously about the Dark Archons -_-; was this prepared before? If so what are the pro’s and cons of the strat and why you chose it…
Kingdom – Well… the reason I wanted to use Dark Archons against Zerg is because… fighting against Ultra/Crack is extremely hard… sunken, lurker, overlod, scourge, you can use all these and then just mass expand… so after a lot of thinking… if I use Dark Archons (en: Darkons, if you will) to steal opponent ultras then it’s a -1 for them and a +1 for me so ultimately it seemed like a +2 for me… and after all Darkons only have to recharge to do it again… and if defilers use plague then zealots become rather stupid so I can just use feedback against that… but during practice the most effect time was during mid-game against zerg… especially when we had similar number expo’s and when I had good Zealot/Archon upgrades… when zerg mass drops ultra/crack here and there.. if I defend while slowly gather Darkons then I get the feeling I might be able to win… usually when both take about the same amount of bases, zerg just masses crack/ultra and overpowers the toss…
During the game with Jju I didn’t think about using Mind Control at first… when I saw defilers I wanted to use feedback so I don’t get Plagued or he doesn’t use Dark Swarm, so I made 1 Darkon but the my main falls so I built mass cannon at the 1 o’clock main and natural but because of his well made defense I wasn’t able to counter rush… and I couldn’t build carriers because my defense would fall before they would emerge… so I slowly gathered Darkons… ㅡ..ㅡ;; the first strat I thought of when I lost to Ultras was to steal a drone and build up a mutalisk army

YGClan - What is your opinion on Protoss?
Kingdom – I thought about it when I first started StarCraft. It seems that winning as protoss once is better than winning 10 times as terran… lately my father said that.. when others are having difficulties that’s when you have to shine.. I heard that same saying from my third year highschool home room teacher. He liked starcraft a lot… he said Protoss has a hard time recently, and doing good then is what being good is really about. I take those words to heart.
A while ago people use to think as long as you’re good at Zerg vs Zerg you could win tournaments, then a zerg dominating terran would win… so then people thought if you were good at Terran vs Terran you could win tourneys... then there was an era when a protoss who could beat zerg would win… lately it seems that a zerg who does good against terran seems to win. Course they’d have to be good at zvz… but for toss to win lately they have to be obviously good at pvp, do exceptionally well against zerg, and do fairly good against terran..;; you have to go with the flow.
YGClan: Next question… what race are you most confident against?
Kingdom – Protoss vs Protoss it my best match up… if I lost to terran or zerg I think.. oh… I need more practice… or I think my opponent is extremely good.. but against protoss but against toss even before the game starts I have a sense of confidence… you have the same amount of money, same units, same race… if you lose you feel embarrassed. ㅡㅡ; Against toss it doesn’t matter what map you’re playing on. You’ll be thinking that same thing anyways…
YGClan – Do you have a specific map that matches your style?
Kingdom – There are no maps that is easy to play on. You don’t win a few games on the same map and then that map is the best for you… it’s all from hard work.. if you win that way sometimes you lose too.. and when you lose you get really mad -_-; but I do have a lot of maps I dislike

*At this point, during the interview someone enters the channel*
TerAto has joined the channel.
<TerAto> Hyungs~ (literally means ‘brother’ in Korea, you speak to your elders with respect)
<YGClan-> eh heh heh… hi;
<Kingdom> Ddang-gil, what do you want? There’s nothing to eat here
<ygclan-> Hello, Pro gamer Back Jung-gil (TerAto) o_o
<TerAto> Hyungs~ hyungs~ what’s up~
<Kingdom> Jungil’s right behind me ㅡ.ㅡ; ask him some questions

YGClan – Next question.. do you have a girlfriend? And what is your type?
Kingdom – Well…
<TerAto> Hot, sexy, with nice legs!!
Haha… Jungil he doesn’t care what you think.. -_-
Type.. I don’t know -_- not much about girls… I’m not very good at that… well out of the famous stars… Son Ye-jin kind of type I havn’t had that many girl friends so I’m still kind of dream for a perfect women.. -_-)
YGClan – Many people are curious about your daily schedule.. please explain a little~
Kingdom – Well I don’t have many matches lately.. so I have a lot of free time.. first we get up at 1 and eat breakfast at 2 and rest. We practice from 2 to 6 and then eat lunch between 6 and 7 and then around 8 to 12 we game some more and then from 12 we’re free. Well that’s how it’s suppose to be.. more specifically we wake up late, eat breakfast, play some games, eat lunch, let it digest… then we go out jogging and build our muscles --;; then go back to gaming and then we have a meeting at 12 and after that we eat dinner… recently I made a webpage at cyworld .com… it’s fun… I didn’t know much about when I saw other people do it… I played Kart Rider every now and then and at headquarters we have a home theatre system and a DVD player o o a while ago I use to play a little w3 too..
YGClan – What kind of mouse and keyboard do you use?
Kingdom – I use K-Tech, Jeans mouse pad and Samsung keyboard.
YGClan – If you weren’t a progamer what do you think you would be doing now?
Kingdom – Well I’d probably be in the army… maybe study in school… or find ways to get a job…
YGClan – How many games do you play a day?
Kingdom – The minimum for our team is 18 games. Times are as explained before 1 to 12. In between we eat twice and just play around. And if we have a game coming up or a team league or a starleague, we practice a bit harder.. after the 12o’clock meeting if we want to we’re free to practice some more or just rest..
YGClan – Is it true manager Joo-hoon times you with a stop watch?
Kingdom – He use to do that… but now he’s a bit busy…
YGClan – Ok and lastly any words for your fans please =)
Kingdom – I still have mbc games and duel leagues. I hope I can succeed in both… after that I will try to make the year 2005 the Kingdom year please watch carefully^^;
