I am just curios about the player from USA, Gadianton. Does anyone know what kind of "victorys" he did. Like, did he ever go to Korea, kicking the boxers ass or something? Or anything else... Please tell me!

I think he might have randomed during that pgl actually. although I'm definitely not certain, I just have this lingering memory of him saying something like that.

Wasn't he attributed to "inventing" 9/10 gate zealot rush?

its right. he randomed when he won pgl. I know because when I bought the wingman gaming mouse with his picture on the back, I had to find out what kind of guy this was

Then he was mad on blizzard for making a new patch since he had proved that sc was balanced when he won the tourney with random.

Gadianton is a really old school player that was a sole protoss player. Yes he was the one who popularized the 9/10 zealot gate rush. im not sure if hes the one who actually originated it but he is the one that popularized it just as maynard popularized that money transfer. he used to call that 9/10 build the "generic protoss build". he won pgl tournament as someobdy stated earlier i beleive, was a kali player solely when kali was big back in the day and he was in the kali vs b.net tournament that somebody here mentioned years ago however at that time he was beggining to quit the game and wasnt up to par of what he was when he played often. he faded out of the scene fairly quicklly due to lack of interest in the game and i think he went to school or soemthing as well which also contributed to him quiting. he was completely out of the scene totally about i would say 9 months before grrr, pillars, maynard and thor all started going to korea. he was definitely a good player back in the day...one of the big namers.

Gadianton went on a Mission. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Chirst of latter days saints (also called Mormon church)... and in the age of 19-20 or something the boys goes out on a mission, preaching the gospel to the world.
BTW; Gadianton is a name from the Book Of Mormon, Gadianton was a gang of thiefs very criminal ones . So that's is the answer why he quited play. There were something that meant more to him; The Church.

Spreading the Mormon faith? I dunno about that. I'm related to a bunch of mormons and we don't talk to them. :\

Hi everyone, was just browsing the internet and stumbled onto your thread. Just wanted to say thanks for all those out there that gave me props for all kinds of stuff, much of it way more than I deserved.

Its cool to see people still remember your name so many years after you've stopped playing.

Well, just wanted to correct a few things in here, since some of it is right, and some is wrong...here goes:

I did go to Korea in 1999 to compete in the Sports Seoul Tournament for first place price of $26k. Logitech paid for the trip and all expenses though. I had a blast there hanging out with the likes of: Soso, Xds~grrrr (we actually slept in the same bed together in some prostitute love motel, but thats another story and I assure you I'm not gay), Everlast, Hone (our translator from australia), and met all the big name Korean players while I was there. I didn't fair so well in the tourney, as they made us play maps we'd never seen before, and the Koreans had (I'm sure of it), so I got 6-pooled and micro'd to death by his lings while I was still out looking for his base. Finished in top 16.

I didn't quit SC after a year. I played SC from its release until about 2000 competitively (roughly 2 1/2 years). Even after I drifted out of the competitive scene, I continued to play SC for fun with my bro's and close friends for another 2-3 years. My name on bnet from time to time was SSC-Paperboyee and for a brief time Bangl^Ke (when i was pretending to be korean)

I did win the 1998 PGL, and got Logitech endorsement deal on their Wingman Gaming Mouse. Thats the only major big money tournament I won.

I never paid Soso to train me. Soso and I were very good friends, and are still very good friends today. He is mainly a professional hold'em player these days and is finishing college. Him and I first met way back in the Warcraft 2 days, and then started playing in the same local tournaments.

I was a Kali player and used to play in the NWL (national warcraft league). I was in that bnet vs kali tournament a LONG time ago. I was in the "IN Clan" for a while, which is why my email still to this day is in_gad@yahoo.com. Oh well, some things never die.

I only played random, but was best known for my protoss play, which is what I felt was my best race. However, I won the final match of PGL with zerg. Later on, I think I became much better at zerg than any other race.

I did program for Case's Ladder for about 5 years, and built their tourney system they still use today.

I didn't serve a mormon mission, although I am mormon. The main reason I stopped playing was because I realized I could never stay comeptitive at a game where 15-18 year old kids were playing all day long, and I was working full time and going to college. Other things just became higher priorities and I realized that although there was $ in starcraft, it was not enough money to keep me interested in devoting my entire life to it.

Hope everyone is still enjoying SC these days.

Just in case anyone wonders what happens to SC players when they go out to pasture, I am now a software engineer and do web development for a mortgage company. I also do a lot of side projects to stay busy. I'm married and we just had our first baby a month ago! Life has been treating this old timer well!

Lol I had no idea this was last years thread, didn't even pay attention to the date. So Gad, if you ever come back, what would you put your skill as from a 1-10 if you played for a month to familiarize again?

"autoran"?

do you mean that he moved his probes away as he was microing his reaver?

as a side question, what speed were his games played on?

i wish casper and/or some other people that have been around for a long time could make a very short history of BW explaining stuff like this.... "first real art of bw" sounds important ~_~, of course its probably unrealistic to expect stuff like this heh, just thinking about it while i read gadianton's nice post... for some reason when i saw the name i thought "protoss" haha

i think i recall someone (mensrea? manifesto?) expressing the same sentiments (to create a history of BW)...

i for sure never heard of his name before this thread and i sure read whatever history of BW i find on the net.... even though i've only looked into competitive BW for like the past year or so

haha i had no idea you were so big. i met you on your name SCC-PaperBoyee, u used to come by clan IEL and Clan drools once in a while.

We used to play together quite a bit and i idolized you and a few of your friends. that's really awesome.

I'm glad life is treating you well, it has the same for me.

I just want to say that this player is actually Jay Severson, now co-founder of the biggest chess website in the world:

http://www.chess.com/members/view/jay

This was verified by Erik on chess.com in a video he did for chess.com/tv

Hopefully that's a good enough reason to bump this thread :p

Wow that's pretty neat. Happen to have the link to the video by chance?

Not sure if you're serious or not... but the first couple pages have a pretty good description if you read them...

It's in here somewhere... http://www.livestream.com/chesscomlive/video?clipId=pla_6b6d7f60-771c-41e5-a255-32931b392179

Unfortunately I don't have enough time/motivation to play through the entire video to find where he mentions Jay's SC past. At the beginning of the video, he does discuss how Chess.com got formed, and how they met. There's also this article with pictures of him (albeit tiny ones) to compare:

http://synworld.t0.or.at/level2/gaming_reader/professionalgaming/severson.htm

I worked at chess.com for a small stint and got to meet him. He's a pretty quiet guy.

If you're willing to watch the entire video I promise it's in there somewhere
