Just to let everyone know;

(Z)SonGDuri
(P)Defy
(T)trOt
(P)hungry
(P)Smile
(Z)JoJoBa
(Z)Hamil

have all decided to leave progaming (whether it was personal or military reasons).

Not that anyone cares but... might as well archive it somewhere.

Anyone know if Smile is playing SC2? I don't know who he is but there's a guy called Smile who's been on/near the top of KR SC2 ladder for the last week or so.

Insignificant retirements is probably a pretty blunt term, considering that these players would be better than the foreigners of SC1

I always feel so bad for these no-name progamers that work so hard to get through Courage and get on a team, and then go years without accomplishing anything. It looks so rough.

It's possible they actually accomplish things such as helping their teammates practice in ways other players might not be able to. But yeah, most likely not.

My rundown of the players (all that I know):
I can't remember what team SonGDuri was on. He was one of the newest b-teamers in professional gaming afaik. TLPD says he was part of the clan _Lt, but I also remember him being a part of NsP_. This might be a mistake.

Defy was a protoss b-teamer on SKT1 for a while, though he never got a chance to achieve anything notable.

trOt was a terran who had a few decent reps as an amateur, and he became a b-teamer on SKT1, but never accomplished anything notable.

hungry was a pretty cool amateur who had really low apm for a bw pro (~200 and sometimes less), but clearly this didn't work out for him. He was a b-teamer on Woongjin Stars.

Smile was some douchebag on estro who was a b-teamer for a while. He beat IdrA in OSL prelims afaik.

I thought JoJoBa retired a long while ago. Maybe he started anew. As I remember it, he was a CJ b-teamer for a long while, though I don't remember him being part of the team lately.

Hamil[GsP] was one of the newer additions to CJ. That's all I know about him.

Never heard of any of their names, i guess it's sad though as this proves BW is truly dying.

So a bunch of nobodies leaving == bw dying? And I wouldn't be surprised if they did try their luck w/ sc2, considering the skill level of current sc2 pros is so much lower. So far the only players who transitioned have been b-teamers and oldschool has-beens who couldn't cut it in bw anymore.

Wasn't there an article saying something along the lines of...

"For progamers that are retiring the coaching staff is suggesting they play SC2 instead of renewing their contract"?

And BW is nowhere near dying -_-

Unless GSL changes its prize structure these guys won't have a chance. As more and more KRN BW players go to SC2, including progamers, the less and less likely any of them will get any real value from playing sc2. The chances of being "the best" sc2 player or at least be in a strong position to be in the money is high now, but as time passes making GSL prelims will be difficult for past BW progamers.

Why must all my favorite players retire at once? BW is now dead to me. Curse you, KeSPA/Korean military service!

Being an korean progamer is pretty hard. Dedicating and sacrificing so much for being so unknown and unimportant and earning so little money.

JulyZerg switched to SC2, NaDa might switch to SC2 and now a bunch of nobodies does it too.

I'm pretty sure it's a matter of time until more significant players switch over too.

We don't know them because for the last 4 years we have great VOD uploaders and live streamers and it is enough, even if someone can spend 3 hours a day. Before, keeping track with Korean scene had more replay watching with people picking players they like and searching for their replays. Today we hear about a gamer when he wins courage or plays on TV, which is quite late career-wise, as it takes around 1 year for b-teamer to "mature" skillwise and more time to pass courage. Before 2005 there were a lot of promising amateurs which we knew from reps and they became pros or quit. Hyuk was known from original gamei ladder around 2003, TLers noticed Canata and Pusan before they even joined proteams, Tempest was and amateur for long time, while Oov was an exception - he went straight to 4U. So these guys might have been future Pusans, Hyuks, Anytimes, but they quit, thats all. The fact that we don't know them might be an effect of different way of watching SC, rather than them being shitty players. Besides, there are players who are valued practice partners without being on TV every week, as we learned from Idra/Artosis last year. Puma, Suny, Magma come to mind.

As for BW dying, when SKT released most of their B-team few months ago I don't remember thinking about the death of BW.

yeah, i feel bad for them. they worked so hard in sc one, but nobody even knows them. still, their sacrifice as practice partners helped a lot of the big name pros.

I think the title is missing a little class. Sure it's insignificant in the grand scheme of progaming and gamers who are known at all, but on a site like TL I feel like there should be a little more sympathy whenever a progamer retires.

I always feel sad for these unknown progamers who never made it and everyone laughs at them when they get. Show some respect guys

At least the good progamers make some money have fanclubs and good achievements to show. These guys have sacrificed so much and have gotten nothing out of it.

I'd kill to be able to say "i used to be a progamer" though. Even it i never achieved anything of note i think that's pretty damn awesome~~ they have my respect for making it as far as they did!

true story, although i might not be as old school i remember seeing reps of crazy-hydra when i was looking for good muta-micro reps, then after like 3-4 years i see him playing for CJ and maybe another team before that i was like WTF

I recognize Trot and Jojoba when I was really into the amateur/semi pro scene. Sad to always hear about pros retiring without being able to do anything. I remember watching some trot reps. Thought he had potential especially tvz.

Its really sad, they're players that havn't lived up to their dream, and now, they wont find work because they don't have the education. This is the sad part of progaming

Or they'll move to SC2 (or another game), or they can go back to school. They tried something for a year or two, it didn't work, they're moving on. Life is all about taking chances, sometimes they pay off, sometimes they don't, but just because opportunities don't always work out doesn't mean you should avoid taking them.

The fact that we don't know them might be an effect of different way of watching SC, rather than them being shitty players. Besides, there are players who are valued practice partners without being on TV every week, as we learned from Idra/Artosis last year. Puma, Suny, Magma come to mind.

As for BW dying, when SKT released most of their B-team few months ago I don't remember thinking about the death of BW.

true story, although i might not be as old school i remember seeing reps of crazy-hydra when i was looking for good muta-micro reps, then after like 3-4 years i see him playing for CJ and maybe another team before that i was like WTF

crazy-hydra is from stars
hydra is from CJ

I wouldnt feel bad for them.
They acomplished their dream of becoming a progamer

id be honored to make it onto a team even if i never got to play.

Also hopefully these guys will move onto SC2!

Hyuk was known from original gamei ladder around 2003, TLers noticed Canata and Pusan before they even joined proteams, Tempest was and amateur for long time, while Oov was an exception - he went straight to 4U. yea I remember that era
hours of searching ygclan for amateur replays

the most I learned was from Pusan and Best replays, before they were famous.
And all is illuminated.

I would have to say they spent a bit more than a year or two on this. ^^ But otherwise you are correct. Either they move on to a new game, keep trying in this game or reset their life to the point prior to aiming for the top of SC.

Not necessarily. Not familiar with the backstory on all these guys (and lacking the attention span to care too much), but SonGDuri for example was still an amateur last June. He was with CJ for about a year. Not sure how long he was actively trying to join a team before that, but not all of these guys have invested 4-5 years into this (and by this I mean actively pursuing the dream of professional progaming, not just playing BW in clans for fun).

At this point most B temaers are probably starting to ask themselves if they can make it to the top of bw or not. If they cant they might as well try out sc2.

Smile is the only one I recognize at all.

These kids put in a lot of their time and have devoted their life to this great game for essentially no success on their parts. No matter what we should respect that.

Wish them all the best.

Edit: Guemchi too?!?! What a terrible day . MVP sucks too but was never a fan of him.

Those players are very good, they probably left because they wanted to, not because their team fired them.

You will get to cheer for them in the next GSL

Oh wow, didn't expect that

well, they didnt have on-air time in one the "lesser" teams out there (not qualifying for finals), so why should they get to play on the big stage in the better teams?
its either "contract for 2-3 more years of minimum wage in the b-team" or "live on".
i totally understand them.
