This mission is really crazy i've only ever beaten it by going one whole group of gaurdians with 3 groups of 9 mutas and 3 devourers. I take out the orange zerg base near your starting location early with hydras and lings. Then I take all those air units and destroy the white base above your starting loc and then take the air over to the island. So then i mine for awhile get ultra upgrades and stuff and eventually get the expo right below the main base of the orange zerg. Then i get some lings hydras and ultras and take my remaining air kill the orange guy then kill off what's left of the white guy. I did this over 2 years ago so some of the details of my attack are probably off.

So that's how i beat this level before i discovered macro. I've known about macro but i never actually played SC by just continuously making units. I always built an attack force and tried to win with it and didn't really have the skills to reinforce it with more than one control group. So about 2 months ago i replayed the whole campaign by just macroing my butt off. I ended up beating the whole SC campaign in less than 24 hours, the last level was a lot easier this way. Then i beat the toss and terran campaings in less than a day too. So i'm wondering how would a macro player beat this level? My idea is to take out one of the close bases fast with hydras lings and mutas then use hydras and gaurdians and just to keep pumping hydras once i start attacking. Could the BW wiki make a guide for this level please like they did for the whole SC2 campaign? Is there any way to beat mengsk with ground units in the last BW level?

hmm, i don't even build guardians. i just go mass hydralisks and use the extra gas for ultralisks.

I remember just dropping ultras just below overmind (there's an empty space) along with hydras, zerglings, and 8 templars, then just mowing everything to overmind and killing it.

Edit: oh and for the 10th lvl, mix in a group of mutas or 2 along with ur ground attack force (ultras a must) and you'll be fine.

The easiest way is probably to just mass hydra... take out the north base, and then drop hydras. You lose a lot of overlords, but any dent you make makes each subsequent drop easier. You can kill Mengsk with a bunch of drops too.... lots of hydra/ling does the trick. It kind of sucks, but eventually you wipe out most of the tanks, and then it gets pretty easy.

Fun fact about this mission. If you could somehow outlast the enemies until their mineral patches are gone they won't attack you anymore. That's assuming you take the island you start on though. They will still build defensive units as soon as you show up but it won't be too much. As time goes on they even build less defensive units.

There were a lot of valks in slay the beast mission lol, that would have been so annoying with pure muta micro.
I beat that mission with just hydras, drone up at the beginning then take out the north and eastern base on your island. Build a couple more hatches and tech to hive for nydus. Then I planted a nydus on the top left edge of the middle island and rallied my forces there, that bases falls really really easily. Drop 2 drones on the right island side and build a hatch and nydus and then I just stream hydras in.
For the last mission I used hydras/lings, take out Protoss because they fall easier for some reason. Then take the bases and do the same with the terrans at the top, and for mengsk I had so much money that I just suicided my hydras/lings left over and build nothing but ultras and scourged whatever wraiths he had. Fun times, brings back a lot of memories.
These missions are actually really fun.

That was by far the hardest mission for me. I was always trying take the middle-south base, without engaging the zerg near me, and the south base from the right after that. And from there I tried to use drops on the overmind area. Never succeeded with this approach.

Finally, I succeeded only when I started with taking down the north-left base, and from there to go north to the right.

Back when I sucked i just used a big force of mutalisks and guardians. It worked pretty easily but it required some sort of patience.

I passed this mission by starting a chat with him.
First it started like a/s/l? and usual shit like that.
Then we started talking about Starcraft and other Blizzard games, like Diablo.
And all of the sudden he came up with a question "Where is the cow level in Starcraft?".
I pondered for a minute and came up with an asnwer "There is no cow level".

he surrendered.

I relied on nydus and drops a lot for this one. alone with lining the edges of my original island with hydras to prevent drops.

ended by just powering through their last base with waves and waves of ultra+hydra+ling+defiler pouring out of a nydus just south of it.

Fun mission!
A few years ago, I beefed up the campaign by slightly increasing the number of units that attack + significantly decreased the time between attacks for the cpu. Basically made the entire BW campaign (non-rpg maps) harder. Same maps, same story, except the comp builds more dudes.

Anyways, this is really really really old, some may still find it interesting. I personally never tried much of it, but have heard it to be quite difficult, but not impossible. You can read more + download here if interested:

I beat it. and i beat it taking the path blizzard originally intended, maybe idno for sure but it was really fuckin hard. What i did was i defended myself with a wall of lurkers and like 3 control groups of hydras each with one defiler for DS.

So then i skip the white island once i took my whole island and just went right after the orange guy. I built a hatchery and a nydus to get across and the first one got destroyed, nuked. So i rebuild and get all my doodz over and attack with 2 groups of hydras one group of ultras and like 7 guardians. The ultras and most of the hydras died absurdly fast and you can't use DS b/c of all the lurkers in OJs base. So i guess i killed off all the wraiths and devourers b/c then suddenly my guardians start killing everything. A 2nd wave of hydras got in before any wraiths or devourers and i slowly moved my hydras and guardians forward. When i got past the orange CC Oj was pretty much done. I killed him off and held that ground. The entire time i'm doing this the white island keeps sending crap over.

So i send my guardians over to the ramp that leads into white's Overmind base and kill about half the defenses without risking my guardians. The missions a lot easier now. I'm down to like 3k resources so i mine some and rebuild my econ. I expand to the base in the bottom right of the map. Then i make a control group of ultras 2 groups of hydras and rebuild my guardians b/c i lost them in a crappy attempt to take the ramp with my guardians. So that attack force just destroys the ramp and the overmind base. Now just for the hell of it before i kill the overmind i'm gonna kill the white island base! Maybe use this as a guide for this level.

Lol i think the island base's out of minerals. Yea it was broke. It had only 2 wraiths and some ground units for D. 6 ultras 12 guardians and 6 devourers owned it XD

God only knows how many overlords i lost to science vessels and AA with each attack.

This levels definitely the hardest level i've ever played in any mainstream game. Although it is a ton easier if you take out the white island before the blue base.

I built a couple of hatcheries on the overmind island (about 8/9) and then rallied lings and ultras and dark swarm dropped on my attacks. I did two waves.

Fun fact from the video here:

"The mission objectives say you must kill the Overmind with a Dark Templar, so you might think the final blow must come from a Dark Templar. Well, not necessarily! The way the game works is that when it detects that the Overmind has been killed, it checks if there are any Dark Templar in the direct vicinity. If one or more is nearby, the objective is complete. If not, the game regenerates a full-health Overmind in the same spot. "

Yeah I always wondered about this. I always pull my units back and sent in a lone templar to kill all the overminds and cerebrates. It was so stupid .

I just attack ground with hydra/ling while microing muta. That's sort of been the theme for all the zerg missions though (where mutalisk is available). Just pump units continuously (when I'm playing zerg against comps muta stack is group 1/2 and from 3 on are all hatcheries) and rally them to battle ground while focusing micro on one group (usually the muta stack), usually gets the job done.
