Savioris sick and people speculate he might retire
We haven't seen much of CJ's sAviOr aka MA BONJWA. Recent reports say he is not in the CJ house anymore, rather he is back at his hometown in Daegu.
Ever since his peak of dominance, the Bonjwa's slump has gone even further below during the 09-10 season. At 2/23/10, Savior was finally removed from the roster and could only be seen on the benches with the CJ team.
At the 29th of March, Savior is suppose to have a lecture in the Cyber University for upcoming students who want to study in the esports field and/or progaming. However Savior had canceled this lecture and fans all around are debating if this is the “Retirement of Savior.”
Because savior has canceled his lecture, this is a violation to the Korean Esports rule and will be penalized for it. If a progamer misses 1 planned lecture it is a warning, if 2 are missed your progaming powers will be frozen for a short period of time, and if you miss 3-5 planned lectures, your progaming license can be revoked. (NOTE: This is not Kespa, so no need to flame Kespa here)
It seems like Savior was not with the team for a long time. It wasn't a problem with his teammates, but a problem of health.
A staff member of CJ Entus said “Savior had a very bad knee problem for a while now. This isn't something that happened 'Suddenly' but rather his knee condition has gotten gradually worse and worse to a point where surgery is a good choice. Savior returned to his hometown and is now getting treatment there. The date of the surgery isn't determined yet."
Because of Savior's unending slump and his knee condition it has been reported that Savior will stay at his hometown until things get better.
Will the man who coined the term “Bonjwa” retire from his position or will we see more of him in the future?

Thanks for the translation, MrHoon. You are like the messenger of bad news lately with the article about Bisu and this, yet I'm glad you are letting us know about important stuff going on

he should have retire some months earlier. he could have retired as a real bonjwa, now he will retire as the guy that sucked arround the last year(s) of his career. stoping right after 1) your peak and 2) starting to do worse constantly is the best you can do, since people tend to remember always the worse of a person.

its pretty much impossible for anyone to retire after their peak, its not in the nature of competitive people, especially those earning money at their game/sport to just quit like that. it just doesn't happen except in extremely rare circumstances.
Plus it's hard to know exactly when your peak is. Obviously he had hopes for a long time of becoming quite dominant again or at least getting back into the top competitive names.

That's not true at all. With great sportsmen people remember the greatness first and foremost and if anything any bad parts are forgotten or ignored. Just think about Boxer, who also gradually dropped in (relative) quality a whole lot, but people still remember his greatness more than anything else.
If Savior retires now he doesn't need to have any regrets whatsoever. I just hope his knee recovers.
Wow. Hopefully savior can get better, if only for himself, not just for his progaming.
The true fall of a more recent great really will signify the end of an era...hopefully we would still get to see him in another tournament like heritage.
Sad, sad news. The twilight of the Gods. The one consolation I have is that if he does retire, he won't be condemned to a sad old man's career on the Air Force team.
Upon reflection I'm reminded of Michael Jordan and I think the parallels are striking.
o Each was the undisputed master of his generation in his sport.
o Each was preceded by a list of great creative players of which they were the most dominant (Bird, Magic, Boxer, Oov, etc).
o Each heralded in a new era of technical players where much of the flash and drama was gone. (maybe the most debatable, but for me, the current NBA can't match the charisma of the former generation, just as in SC. Flash and Jaedong are probably better players than Savior and Boxer, but lack something extra, just as guys like Kobe and Lebron might be more complete than the older greats, but just seem to lack than extra something that Jordan/Bird/Magic had)
o And finally, both Savior and Jordan came down to earth after their time at the top. I think of Jordans "comeback" with the Wizards and sigh. Just as with Savior's "I will destroy everyone in 2009."
Maybe it's just nostalgia for me, but you can't go back it seems. Sigh.
I had an ex who had the same knee problem. She wore a brace under her clothes a lot, so maybe Savior always has, too. She had surgery, but it didn't really fix anything.

Funny, I was thinking of the exact same thing. Except Jordan's comeback with the Wizard's was decent. He had a few 40 point games (which is amazing considering his age) and he had been out of basketball for a while. With Savior its basically him getting 1 win over Jaedong and 1 over Stork and otherwise just getting obliterated (his game vs best on fighting spirit was so hard to watch). Saviors slump would be like him winning his 4th championship then next season dropping to 10 ppg.
On March 30 2010 03:16 anch wrote: what is with this lecture thing? Mandatory or some side-job?
Sounds like mandatory public appearances/goodwill appearances. Probably a lot like how professional golfers are required to play at the Pro/am events before tournaments with event sponsors.
:/ I wasn't around to watch the Pro scene when SaviOr was the king, but through my year+ of lurking/joining teamliquid, I've gone through a lot of his stuff--the TLFEs, many of his old VODs, etc.
On March 29 2010 21:08 writer22816 wrote: wasn't around when this guy was bonjwa, and always laughed at his fanboys...
Maybe you should watch some of his games? His play at his peak can only be described as beautiful. He changed the way I looked at Starcraft.
People get really excited about Boxer as well. He was a super-badass and a very cunning, exciting player and figure. But sAviOr is the guy I will always think about when I think of BW. He showed me that the game isn't just an arena where you awe the spectators with your brilliance, it's a canvas where you can create a work of art.
Laugh all you want, but you must watch this man's games.
In a way I feel like retirement is overdue for him. I popped my head into the scene at the decline of his career, which is unfortunate because I missed out on the big chunk of his dominance, but he was the first professional "sports" figure that I actually rooted for, and felt myself despondent about at his each (increasing) failure. I remember the article that was translated about him, the one talking about egonomy, that gave me the impression that he was far more aware of his standing in life than many other gamers, and it's pretty obvious that's what's biting him now -- the fact that he knows gaming won't last forever for him. And it's become increasingly clear over the past few interviews with him that he's got one step out of the scene, even if it's still turned back toward the gaming scene. I wonder if it's for the better for him to just take that other foot and walk out entirely, and move on with his life.

Good comparison.
Get better MJY! You will always be my favorite progamer.
We all know Sea’s MO: get into the OSL, dominate everyone, and then run into a strong ZvT player and lose 1-2. He’s done it twice now. One of these days, however, he’ll beat that Zerg, and that day is the day that I pronounce him—finally—a man. Until then, he’ll have to be content with the #5 spot.
bonjwas are bonjwas because they dedicate the most into the game if they dont get health problems, then they aren't doing it correctly if you read winner's interviews, you could see that players talk about their ridiculous practicing which can run for hours after the official schedule is over.
I'd hate to see this man go, but I can't help but think this is a good thing for him. I hope he does get well soon. It's not like he didn't have a great career, and he'll always be remembered.

Pfft, what a load of crap. Flash is a damn good player but nowhere near as scary as Savior was back in his era of dominance. With Flash you can expect other players (Jaedong, Stork) to give him a run for his money, but when you watched Savior play it used to be just to see how he overwhelms the other players' armies. Watching to see him 'compete' was out of the question - you simply presumed that he would auto-win, whether it be against Nada or iloveoov, it was just a question of how fucking awesomely he would do it.
I remember Rekrul saying something about how he ended up blowing all his money on whores though.

Actually that is incorrect. Savior, while dominant in leagues for a long time, never had the dominant streaks displayed by today's players. What he does have, is 4 starleague golds and 2 silvers, but never streaks. Current gen top progamers (like Flash and to a lesser extent JD) are more dominant.

so what youre saying is.beating oov 3-0,nada 3-1, reach 3-1(i think?) and then beating silver or chojja one in a zvz bo5 in their respective primes(ok silver/chojja are doubtful) not being dominate?
This thread feels a bit presumptuous though; he could just get surgery and come back; THERE'S ALWAYS HOPE GUYS. I think though, everyone has already stopped believing.

haha im sorry man i really misread that completely.
Savior was a great player; one of the greatest of all time, but it is a good time to retire in my opinion. At this point he's just tarnishing his reputation.
The lack of intense physical competition in "E-sports" lends itself to old washed up names (not to include Savior) returning from the grave to torture all their fans and embarrass themselves with their pathetic skillZ
Imagine Mario Lemieux lacing up the skates for one more season.

WUT? Most Jaedong's wins came from proleague, playing progamers no one even cares about... like.. ganzi... oh wait he lost to ganzi. rofl sAviOr got his wins from winning starleagues.. beating the best players 3-0.. I remember NaDa saying "The less games you play the harder it is to do well, you try to play as safe as possible, and it really increases your chances of losing" ... or something like that lol.. Basically.. sAviOr won an OSL on the most ridiculous maps playing terrans thats had insaneeeee tvz... like all their tvz winrates were like 10%+ higher lmao.
Flash is more dominant? Which is why he just lost an MSL to power outage.?. sAviOr overcame longinus/reverse temple/neo-arkanoid/hitch hiker, a simple power outage would've been simple..

That OSL Finals game between Savior and Nada on Reverse Temple will always be ingrained in my mind as the prime example of Savior's dominance. He basically threw map balance out the window.
NOOO THE ONLY BONJWA THAT ISN'T A TERRAN IS RETIRING!!!! This makes me so sad, watching sAviOr dominate the game was when I first started following the StarCraft scene! Who remembers that stats they showed when he was playing? Crazy!
As impressive as Flash's current dominance is he's not close to Savior's bonjwa dominance back then yet. I still remember when everyone was fcking scared of him, calling him Hitler and praying desperately for anyone to just beat him once using cheese or ZvZ lucky builds... but to no avail. He bullied people left and right so easily everyone even his fans would want to see him beaten once. That feeling of dominance from Savior is unique in the history of Starcraft - maybe only somewhat matched by IloveOOv to a certain extent.

Savior is not the original bonjwa (Boxer, Nada, iloveoov all came before savior). Nor is he the most dominant. I'd say oov was more dominant in his generation. Let's just call it a toss-up.

Bonjwa is a term established during the Savior era, then applied to Boxer, Nada, and Oov in retrospect. So... it all depends on what is meant by "original".
