So, as I type this, I'm in school, so I may or may not be in a rush, but I was recently assigned a project to make a presentation of some sort about 'change'. My teacher advised we all did something we really enjoyed, lest this be a drag. So, I chose Starcraft 2 and the change of E-sports in America. I figure it'll not only be a fun project to do, but I get to learn, and I get to expose e-sports to more people in America.

My idea for it is to get a history of Brood War, which was like number four sport in South Korea before, which will definately be a fun fact to throw in, and talk abotu how we couldn't compete with Koreans and we were - and still are considered foreigners. Then, I figure I'd transition to Starcraft 2, and the progressive growth of e-sports in the United States. Starcraft has been exploding recently in the States and I'm really excited. From there, I'll talk about all the players, and how we can actually compete against the Koreans.

I also wanted to post a game commentated by Artosis or Day[9] or something of the like and show it to my class, I've been looking at the TSL, which would be the preferred series I'd take a game from, but the district limited Youtube, and pretty much blocked it completely from the internet. Regardless, I've been looking at NASL, which is thankfully not blocked.

Anywho, I came here to get my text refined, and to post drafts and copies of what I'm doing - if anyone is interested. But I also came here for ideas and the like to help contribute to the project, and make it that much better.

So, any ideas/help?

I think it's a horrible idea. Firstly you won't be able to adequately show how this relates to "change". I mean what are you going to do, show them the patch notes for the 12 years of BW? "So in 1999 a spawning pool was 150 minerals, now it's 200"

Not only will no one understand, but you will need to dumb everything down just to get the point across.

I think maybe doing it on E-Sports in GENERAL is a good idea, don't focus too much on SC:BW and SC:2.

Dozens of people have done this lately. Using the search function you can find all the general information you need to get started.

take kiwikaki against select at ign commented by wheat, the game they played on shattered temple is a good exemple of micro to save the day, and its in a reasonable lenght. I think its a good game cause everything add up on the select timing push wich get shut down in a couter attack.

You can talk about major tournements, the best way to captivate your audience is to talk about a player from your country, or region or something they can relate themself to.

I don't know where you're getting that view from. His idea seems completely reasonable.

You should know(and add in your presentation) atleast the following imo : (Granted you have enough time).

Why E-sports was popular in Korea,(Difference in culture and Pc bangs relative to America). If you do not start with this people will be like, oke.....so why would I care about this?I mean its geeks playing a game for a living? What the hell is this?.
Do NOT explain the game, the mechanics or anything such as that(Micro, Macro , strategy should NOT be explained), they will neither understand nor care about it unless they play the game(and then they will already know it).

Talk about what problems E-sport encounters(Talk about the stigma and stereotyping concerning E-sports for example(basement nolife-kid 24/7 on a game w/e)., talk about how E-sports is spreading with the surge of the internet, social media and streams(hence the change). Again, do NOT talk about the game content but rather about the change(you do not get marks if you just make a documentary about a game really).
Talk about the Blizzard vs Kespa courtcase, IP rights and the problems which E-sports encounters relevant to this, why a E-sport is different from a Sport yet is not that different after all(if you can follow me).

Then show the intro of Flash vs Effort in the hanger or any SPL finals,(actually it is a good way to start with this)
A picture says a thousand words too, opening a presentation with a picture of tens of thousands of koreans watching two guys playing a game means much more to the crowd then your explenation.

Also, as said before, a presentation about E-sports is better then about SCBW/SC2, SCBw/SC2 should be used as examples, not core to your presentation.

Edit:Bonus: if you want to weird out your classmates, show them Nada's Body.

A reasonable idea is not the same thing as a good idea which is also not the same thing as a horrible idea.

Why the hell would he do that? lol

Change seems like a very open subject, maybe focus your presentation on how the perception of gaming has changed over the last decade not only in america, but in practically all continents. How it went from fun/silly console games into e-sports etc.

I think the idea is reasonable. Just make sure you focus on GROWTH and not on the GAME. Talk about tournaments, prize money, increase numbers of tournaments etc. Europe is great as Europe is growing SUPER fast and have so many tournaments.

You could also perhaps talk about how having cheap and easy internet affects how easy it is to communicate and whatnot. Conflict in korea is also interesting (between the two games) but I suggest mainly talking about growth in europe and about tournaments including both KOR and NA/EU

high school or college, and they must have given you some kind of guidelines more than just change?? Are you sure they didn't mean some kind of change in society or something?

This was actually exactly my plan, I wanted to talk about growth etc in the U.S and the like.

Do NOT explain the game, the mechanics or anything such as that(Micro, Macro , strategy should NOT be explained), they will neither understand nor care about it unless they play the game(and then they will already know it).

I don't plan too, but I will likely show a game with commentary, thanks for the input. :D

No guidelines, just change.

If you really want your presentation to take off, focus on the players, not the game. The biggest "change" I've seen since the turn of the century is the concept that playing video games is an acceptable career choice. I'm honestly hoping that in the near future, becoming a pro-gamer is seen with the same verisimilitude as any other sport.
